I am about to beat Hard as a warrior- it's easy.
I want to play a duelist class. I love some of their skills.

My question is, on nightmare....wow...I'm so worried my duelist will get hammered by AOEs/etc.

what would you say is a solid nightmare team, and possibly, what a good nightmare build for a Duelist would be

thanks:wizard:

I'm playing nightmare and my team consists of Aveline, Varric, Anders and my Rogue. Can't really tell you anything about duelists though. My PC is specced archery/assassination/shadow. This works great in my opinion.

yep for nightmare i would reccomend assasin. assasinate is really handy to get rid of other assasins rogues. and will save u alot of heal cd's. and shadow is great because of the 100% crit behind enemies. but i think u could do it with duelist instead.

yes I'd rather go with a duelist.

just something about the whole ninja assassin gameplay doesn't appeal to me.

A gentleman expert duelist, though, that is cool in my books.  Like Syrio, the Waterdancer.

It has nice passive buffs, but I don't see why you would want to actually duel enemies when you're playing a physically weak class. Rogues are at their best when attacking someone else's target without getting hit themselves.

I think they made Duelist a bit underwhelming sadly. Hopefully someone will come along with a crazy build and prove me wrong.

Duelist is good because it has the highest survivability out of all the rogues. Ideally you should use talents like goad and armistice to manage the aggro of your enemies so that they are only targetting your tank. You pretty much use Throw the Gauntlet to pull out enemies and take them on one by one or you can do those on the range. Use Vendetta to teleport behind ranged enemies. Dual wield rogues are the best for duelists because of how well it works with Vendetta.

I did a Shadow/Duelist before I respec'd and I basically used Vendetta and Twin Strikes to kill a mage or an archer then used Decoy to get out of fire. Then start tearing up the enemies back lines by myself while Aveline tanked the melee. I did it all on nightmare too.

My Assassin / Shadow is a buzzsaw - I see no reason whatsoever to pick the duelist spec, save Vendetta (which is pretty cool, but inconspicuous and decoy will save your ass more often on the harder difficulties). At level 25, I have 108% critical hit chance (with Anders in party - otherwise a measly 98%), do 250% crit damage and 280 DPS. It's kinda ridiculous, and makes me wonder why so many people complain about rogues being underpowered.

That said, a few hits and my guy is toast - but with Aveline in the party soaking up / transferring most of the damage, I get through most fights without using a healing potion.

I had duelist on hard, and the constant staggers make the very idea of actually dueling people crazy. If the spec had something which increased your fortitude rather than just defense, it might work.

As a whole, however, I have come to decide I hate rogues this time around. Starting about half way through Act II the second even a trash mob gets in a hit, you're staggered and there's a good chance you'll be chain staggered and never get off an ability, so they require constant micromanagement and even so are just not up to par with mages and warriors.

But, back to your question: if you want to do it, also take some heavy agro management skills, you will not be able to "duel" anyone from about level 10.  But you will be able to take down mobs fast, one at a time, as long as you micro-manage and chain skills.

Wow, lots of duelist hate (or at least non-duelist preference) in here!  I used a duelist/shadow DW rogue on Nightmare, and I actually had a blast... once I got the right talents/gear.

The turning point for me was getting gear that made me immune to staggers and stuns (and crits but that is not as essential imo); once you get these you can more or less wade right into combat and start tearing things up.

Vendetta, at least by the time I got it, could 1-shot or nearly 1-shot any elite I found, so it was great to use against, say, an elite archer, and suddenly I'm in the back of the group and can have my way with all of the archers back there.

And for everyone talking about how rogues get killed so easily... one of my best groups was DW rogue Hawke, Merril or Sebastian, Varric, and Anders, my rogue being the "tank".  I could tie up most of the melee while barely getting scratched because of the really high defense (and Anders' healing, bless him) and the ranged would tear things to pieces.

The abilities I got the most use out of were Rush (upgrades are nifty but not necessary, it's good CC for your ranged), Explosive Strike/Twin Fangs (obviously), Vendetta, Confusion (at lower levels, later on I nearly forgot I had it), the Specialist talent that lets you stun people (forgot its name) and the big Specialist talent, and of course a mage with Haste.

Try it out, it's a blast.

Etched Ring of the Twins:

That and Ring of No Wishes, which I can't seem to find a link to, but I think it's from the Black Emporium.

I'm fairly certain that it's actually knockback that is what causes your character to pause whenever you're hit, not stuns.  You'll still get knocked away by power attacks, but if your defense is high enough you'll dodge most of those anyways, and boss ones you can dodge via moving.
