Imported my dalish Warden who was left by Alistair on his way to throne, then made the ultimal sacrifice (Alistair wasn't even near the Archdemon so poor elf died), then made through Awakening (even this fact made me lol). In the "Hero of Ferelden" entry everything is correct, but in Alistair's entry it is told he made Warden his queen (again, first - impossible for dalish background, second - she made an ultimal sacrifice).
But Alistair may reaqlly be a bad, bad boy and...

Actually it IS possible for a non human noble background to be queen.  You just had to harden Alistair and be in a complete 100% romance with him, then suggest it and hell say something to the effect of "If I am King, I can do as I please" when people object.

Also, if you continued you game into Awakening then already you've got a "hand wave" of your charactre somehow surviving... so that could be part of your problem.

No, it's possible to be his mistress if you convince him that he can do what he wants when he thinks it wouldn't be fair. He'll still marry to try for an heir, and not to the non-noble--that's why he thought it was a bad idea.

Ah, ok.  Although, a mistress can provide an heir just as readily as a queen. He's proof of that!

If you're a human noble, you can marry him instead of being mistress if you make it happen at the Landsmeet. An elven or dwarven heir wouldn't help. The child wouldn't be accepted, legitimate (impossible) or illegitimate. And the human noble has to make the marriage happen, he won't suggest it himself, since he knows that 2 wardens can't produce a child in normal circumstances. His sense of duty makes him feel somewhat guilty about that, too.

They've shown in DA2 that half-elves and even half-dwarves exist, so why couldn't a half-elf be heir?  You think the people of Ferelden, who care about Theirin blood above all else, would say "OMG filthy half-elf!!! You can't be our king, your mom was a dirty ****!!!"  Sure, some would... but would the majority?

Yes, that's exactly what I think. Half elves and half dwarves exist, and even look human, but that doesn't mean that the nobility would accept rule by them. You've seen the prejudice. They weren't all that keen on being ruled by a bastard. Alistair tells you right out in the game that the nobility would never accept an elven queen, and he's obviously right when you look at everything that's said of elves and how they're treated. Of course they care. We're told that they care.

Yes, but once Alistair proves to be a competent and just ruler (if you hardened him) then they accept him. I think it would be the same with an elven queen.  Plus, you aren't making her Queen instead of Alistair.  Those that are prejudiced would either have to get over it, or else take action and be arrested for treason, just like in real life.

Well clearly he just stiches the head onto another womans body and has someone(Jowan maybe?) do some bloodmagic/necromancy and boom Wardens back!

But even in my import where the human noble married Alistair and they ruled together, by Act 3 it says in the codex they've been plagued by people that believe it was all a conspiracy to get Anora off the throne and blah blah. So even in the fairy tale ending it mentions that there are most definitely problems at home with the nobles. I'm playing through now with my imported Warden that was just the mistress, I'm sure it's just going to be uglier.
