I am so dissapointed in the Dog bonus character.

While i think it was obvious that it would be as powerful as in DAO, it would atleast act like a pet and have its own UI health bar etc and be able to control it.

But no, it acts so randomly and you cant even select it to attack targets you want it too.

Has got to be IMO the worst bonus of any game....ever.

Edit: On the PC i could control and direct summoned pets in DAO and i guess i expected the same to be true in DA2, which is probably why im dissapointed in Dog because i cant direct him and he just randonly runs off attack whoever.

No, because he's been deal breaker for me. It might be because I have parties with two mages in it, but his ability to keep crap off of my back makes him worth it. YMMV, though.

Dog is worth the price of the Black Emporium just for all the events with your companions talking to him.

I'm still angry Fenris has no scenes with him though >:[

Personally I found him to be rather useful since he seems to go after ranged which always comes in handy. The fact you don't have to fuss with him is even better. Wish he'd been like this in DA:O as well.

Dog tanked a dragon for my mage Hawke in the deep roads. All of the rest of my party was dead, I didnt have a rez spell/potion or anything. Dog saved me! :) I enjoyed Dog and since I bought the game new, I got him anyway.

Dog's pretty useful for hate control sometimes. I wouldn't have beaten the rock wraith without him.

Fenris talked to my dog. Fenris talked about how the breed started in the Imperium and how they defected due to the treatment by the people of the Imperium or something. They found homes with the "barbarians" in Ferelden more palatable than the magisters.

He's worth it, if at the very least for the solo duel with the Arishok, you can summon dog :)

My mage defeated the Arishok single-handedly, using the Dog. Well...after dying many many times. But that Dog was gods-sent, in that fight.

Honestly, I think dog is more to be adorable in your house and talk to your companions.

This.  The dog can be deceptively useful simply for keeping enemies busy.

Dog saved my but while fighting the rock wrath. My whole party was dead except for me and I was in pretty bad shape. Then I remembered I had the dog and summoned him. He bought be the time for the timer on my health potion to finish and I was able to take out the wrath because of him. When the chips were down my dog had my back and for that I will be grateful for him.

So your all happy that you cant actually select the dog and set him to attack what you want rather than him attacking randomly?

I was happy when i heard we would be getting Dog back, but its limitation is dissapointing to me. :(

Dog is not a companion. He is a summon. The Ranger had the ability to summon creatures, and you couldn't control them.

Could on the PC :(

Thats probably why im so dissapointed. That i could control a summoned pet and direct them to attack who i wanted them too, and yet i cant do that with Dog.

Dog is brilliant! I was expecting just a non speaking ranger summon that 'happy barks' occasionally, as a nod to fans of Mabari. I got so much more, all the little examines in the mansion and Anders' chat with him alone make it an excellent bonus. Not to mention that he really helps in combat if you are still getting the hang of things.

Edit: I did prefer Origins Dog's face though, I'll say that. Although as it is I'm glad the new Dog doesn't look identical to Rabbit.

I just wish that the dog wouldn't run after everything so randomly.

Although control over the dog would be nice he too is rather well implented.
My guess is it was there in the first place but in order to prevent second hand selling the dog and the black emporium were cut out again.

He's worth his price alone for his use as a decoy. Especally on Nightmare with way Rogues go into Stealth and do that cheesy backstab attack. They will spend time backstabbing the dog which is all good with me.
And you can spam your dog as much as you want, the cooldown is only like 2 seconds.

I think he's a great bonus! Sure, you don't get to control him or upgrade him, but he's an extra character that you are allowed in addition to your other companions, so it's like having 4 companions with you instead of 3. I think that more than makes up for the fact that I can't control or upgrade him. And he really helped when I was fighting alone in a duel!

Same here. I wouldn't have been able to defeat the Arishock with a mage single-handly without him.
