Speaking of Dog, how is his stat calculated? Is it based on yours? Or he just level up like monsters do. E.g. pre-determined stats based on difficulty level and character level?

Gah, which act? I missed this completely.

I'm really not sure. I want to say Act 3 though it only happened once. I had one game going and didn't like the way things were turning out so I started over sometime after Aveline and Fenris showed up at the mansion. Aveline's scene was different on the second run as well and Fenris didn't show, nor did anyone else. I'm not entirely sure what the trigger is for any of them unless I just didn't go home as much.

The only thing I don't like about the dog is that he doesn't carry over between zones, and I have to wait for the cooldown before I can summon him in the new place.

Other than that, he is awesome. I love the party interactions with him, and he was great for sowing general chaos and removing some aggro in my mage playthough.

Dog is worth the price of the Black Emporium just for all the events with your companions talking to him

The dog has it's uses especially in a long fight if any party members fall when you aren't paying enough attention you can summon the dog for some extra help in taking agro from you when you get swarmed. It's a freebie and it helps out sometimes so it's all good.

Does bug out sometimes though and likes to get stuck in things XD

He's worth it, if at the very least for the solo duel with the Arishok, you can summon dog :)

This right here, my hawke was spec'd for CC and Heals... so I needed some help in the Arishok duel... he didn't do much but him aggroing a couple times let my spells build back up to stun and stagger the bastard, now that my Hawke is even higher I can be an epic one man bomb squad, hitting with punishing attacks at first and switching into healing if I should need.

I'm pleased the dog was a bonus. If he were in the core game, I'm sure the Bioware writers would have killed him off too. I finished the Lily Killer quest line and thought "d***, now all that's left is the dog...I wonder if they'll kill him too." Then I remembered he was DLC; stay with me, Bertram!

The dog is definitely worth it. Like others have said he knows when to keep a group of enemies busy so Hawke can focus elsewhere. Along with the companion scenes, the best part is his rolling on the ground when you summon him. So cute!

Dog tanks like a champ. He went toe to toe with a high dragon and helped my party recover after two near healer wipes. Dog can stay!

dog was useful because often enemy assassins would stealth attack the dog instead of one my party

Not sure, but he definitely levels as you do.  I've seen him take assassin backstabs that completely obliterate everyone except for Fenris and Aveline.  His dps is marginal, (like 20+ points of damage at level 14 I think), but his aggro ability and hitpoints scale really well.  My only problem with Dog is that sometimes I try to carefully place my team behind a checkpoint, but then I forget about him.  Then I finally notice the lone blue circle surrounded by red :(.  I just don't have the heart to let him die, so my party always charges in.  Ah well, it's more fun that way!

So your all happy that you cant actually select the dog and set him to attack what you want rather than him attacking randomly?

I was happy when i heard we would be getting Dog back, but its limitation is dissapointing to me. :(

Happy isn't the right word. While it would have been cool to be able to control Dog directly, I wasn't expecting it at all. If you were given the ability to control him directly, he would have to take up a companion slot for game balance. You essentially get a "sort of 5th" party member for free. No complaints there. On the contrary I was actually surprised by how useful Dog has been in my game. He's saved my butt several times!

I don't see Dog as a bonus for battles. He's just supposed to be amusing, a way to get to know companions or a distraction for baddies.

Plus he's cute. Good Dog!

Interaction scenes make him worth it and he is a good decoy. It would have been nice if he became a optional fifth companion with health bar and talents, just not as powerful as DA:O dog.

My mage defeated the Arishok single-handedly, using the Dog. Well...after dying many many times. But that Dog was gods-sent, in that fight.

Same here. I wouldn't have been able to defeat the Arishock with a mage single-handly without him.

What they said. I managed to defeat him with a Mage, but that was only due to having taken spells that lock down the targets and having Dog run interference while I ran around in circles waiting for my potions to recharge.

I'm just sad about the dog's look. I liked in Origins where the dog had different patterns and stuff because of what you equipped on it. Sure, you can't equip your dog but it would have been neat if I could customize his look a little, like make him black with glowing red or eyes or something.

Has got to be IMO the worst bonus of any game....ever.

I disagree. I haven't finished the game yet, but the dog saved my neck in the fight with the dragon in the Deep Roads. Everyone else was dead and the dragon was running after me for the most part thereafter, and the dog wasn't doing much damage if any, but he sufficiently irritated the dragon every so often that it would stop and stare down at the insolent mammal snapping at it's heels, and when this happened I had sufficient time to turn and loose a few arrows at it without it breathing down my neck.

Mufasa has saved my Mage Hawke's ass so many times. Whenever a situation get's bad, and Aveline dies, Mufasa tanks for me. So I disagree with this thread. I think having the dog as a 5th attacker is better than as a party member. That's my oppinion, however.

Dog tanked a dragon for my mage Hawke in the deep roads. All of the rest of my party was dead, I didnt have a rez spell/potion or anything. Dog saved me! :) I enjoyed Dog and since I bought the game new, I got him anyway

That's exactly what happened to me, I enjoyed that fight so much... though the Dragonlings were a pain for me, and I had to spam fireballs.

The Mabari are one of the coolest concepts in Dragon Age 2 - right behind the Qunari. Everything else is derivative of traditional fantasy concepts (though well done in my opinion).

You can use him against a duel with the Arishok and buy yourself time to strategize. He covered for me many, many times in fact so I wouldn't dare call him useless.

To quote a certain Warden... "He's not mangy!" He's a life-saver. Had a couple of times in my first playthrough where he really helped and the interactions with the followers at the estate are nice too.
