I was just fighting those damn shadow assassins on the mountain and came across something.  I play on hard mode, but I assume it works on nightmare.  Anywat, I paused the game right when an assassin popped up behind my rogue and started to backstab.  I popped "rush" right away and when I unpaused my rogue rushed the assassin and knocked her back before she did any damage to me.

I'm sure timing is very critical but it did work, 100%.

Once you get twin fangs and backstab
Mighty potion
heroic aura
Some passives that ensure crits
Backstab
Twinfangs
Death
The thing I do to all assassins on hard, but if you dont have those skills yet than this is a good alternative, however it does not kill them

I mainly just meant it as a way to stop the backstab... killing them is another matter

I like how enemy assassins have some of the highest health points around...sort of out of place in a glass cannon type class

When they disappear, run around in circles until their stealth runs out...
Lame but it kind of works.

Or you can hae a very high defense and cross fingers, too. I've had assassins miss backstabs on my duelist rogues many times. Other times... it didn't go so well.

Summon the dog if you have it, they will pick him over party members quite a few times, else try to stay close to the tank and stonewall him/her. Best strategy is simply to kill the assassin before he is able to stealth, which is easier said than done, since it requires an enormous amount of single target DPS, especially on Hard/Nightmare. What I usually do is use upgraded mark of death on them, then instagib them with upgraded assassinate. Unfortunately on lower levels, there is very little you can do about them.
