And to answer that topic simply, I love Bethany to much and I hate Carver to much.
I have only reached act2 so far but my impressions of Bethany is that I love that character
And I played 1-2hours as a mage in act1 with Carver and decided that I wont do that again ever.
And speaking with my friends they kinda feel the same way, everyone is hating Carver but loves Bethany.
So is the same thing going on on the internet aswell, is Bethany loved by everyone and Carver hated?
Don't know about you but I will never play a mage in DragonAge2

This really isn't a build...
But you know, Carver's an interesting chap. I mean you want to protect Bethany she's so nice and all, but Carver just comes off as a douchebag that everyone hates. I love it.

Carver is just a whiny younger brother that can't get no respect.

I hate carver too, although I thought I had him with my mage because she was a female. I played as a male warrior and I loved Bethany. I got her killed though which made me depressed.

I've only played a mage so far so I don't know what Bethany is like, but I loved the rivalry with Carver. It invigorates me! I started making decisions I wouldn't normally make just because I knew he'd hate them. A couple times he agreed with the decisions I made and couldn't stand for that kind of behavior so I reloaded and changed my response.
I've never really liked taking antagonistic party members with me into battle before Carver and I think it has to do with that fact that he's family. Even though he's a huge jerk and I make fun of him constantly we still have this connection to one another and we each care about what happens to the other. It's very similar to the relationship I have with my real life brother and that's probably why I like Carver so much.
I was more upset that he joined the Templar and I lost him as a party member than I was when my mother was turned into Frankenstein. (which was soo messed up) Don't get me wrong I LOVE that he joined the Templar, because it feels like he did it just to spite me, but I miss the interaction. If I could visit him in the gallows whenever I wanted just for the arguments that would be awesome, but I'm almost done with act 2 and he's been m.i.a. since I got back from the deep roads.
I know Carver is a huge jerk but I can't see playing the game without him makes me what to play another mage on my next play through. "Come back Caver! I'm sorry...*whisper* kinda..."

I recommend you should try a mage play through to the end. Because of the templar and mage conflicts it makes for an interesting story and besides you don't have to encounter Carver for the majority of the game. Just leave him at home like I did in Act 1.

Play as a mage and just yell at him in every conversation. I am doing that now and it's pretty funny when he squirms.

Doesn't matter much. You can replace Carver very quickly and you won't have to listen to him. I just wish I could get rid of Gamlen once and for all. But no matter which class you pick, he doesn't die in act 1

Heh I hate playing as a mage in general, so I haven't had to deal with Carver yet.

I'm playing as a full Spirit healer on my third go now, and it's pretty relaxing most of the time, and almost trivial during some fights, and just ignore carver that's what i did

It's a pity that Carver is such an ass to have, i hate him.
However the storyline itself is more centered around "you" as a mage Hawke.

I thought I'd dislike him but I found his violence-mongering and general grumpiness has sort of grown on me! Who would have thought?

I think for my mage playthrough I'm going to take Carver for a nice trip to the deep roads. Anders won't be coming.

Carver makes a decent enough GW and in the end the "No hugs on the battlefield" line made me lol.

i like carver alot more than bethany actually.
once i got anders and merril bethany was always benched, but i used carver all through act 1.
his rival personality is far more interesting than super peppy bethany. she's just so BLAND.
and come on guys, admit it, if your big brother/sister had super powers, and your twin sister had super powers and your life was railroaded because of it you'd be a bit resentful / jealous too.
and how come theres so much hate for carver being broody and hostile but not for fenris?

Honestly I don't like Fenris either. He starts out insulting pretty much my whole party and annoys me with his constant mage hating. It wouldn't be so bad if he was the only one, but it seems like half the characters in the game do nothing but complain about mages.
The mages on the other hand are usually power hungry blood mages, so maybe Fenris has a point.

I don't mind Carver. He absolutely hates Templars and if you play as a Mage that should work well with your decisions if you plan to protect mages as a whole.
I used him all through Kirkwall and he destroyed.

Carver might be a whiny little boy in Act 1 but when he makes his appereance at the end of game all I had to say was like.

I agree with the OP, I'm never going to play in a way that doesn't result in Bethany surviving. That whole deep roads thing was so sick and totally unexpected, happily I had saved right before going in so it wasnt all that hard to undo that, and hopefully I'm safe the rest of the way (Im in act 3 right now). I'm sure one day there will be a decent mod that lets Bethany live while you play as a mage, I know they're working on it right now, once they get that done I'll play as a mage, until then I'm happy with being a Warrior or Rogue. I know very little about Carver good or bad, that doen't have an impact on my decision either way, I just can't stand the idea of Bethany not surviving, so that simply cannot and will not happen

I just can't kill off Bethany, she's so nice! Maybe it's because I wish I had a little sister like that but I was sad when I lost her to the Wardens at the end of Act 1 and I was so happy when I got her back at the end of the game.

You know, I was on the Bethany bandwagon because it was a lot of fun to make fun of herp derp Carver.
But, Bethany has zero personality.
Carver may be a huge douche. Scratch that. He is definitely a huge douche. But, at least he had a personality. He had vices. He had some good qualities as well. He had personality. I despised him, but there was a him to despise. His personal little quests had actual flavor to them, especially since it shone a light on a figure that is largely dark throughout the game, your father.
Bethany is a marionette with less personality than bath tissue.
Considering how quickly you can remove either of them from your party, basing your class choice on not wanting to play with one over the other seems really, really, stupid. But, maybe that's just me.
