for my 2nd play through i want a diffrent party with me , is aveline the only tank? considered being the tank myself if this is the case. Can you respec another party member you find more intresting and have them as a tank or does that not work?

I thought that any warrior can be a tank? I have not tested this out, however.

I didn't like Aveline and used Fenris. There are several talents on the skill trees available to him that are beneficial for a tank. If he has good constitution and talents he works well. I don't know about Nightmare difficulty though.

I kept wishing that the seeker interrogating Varric would be my tank

You can't give Fenris a sword and shield.  He has to be a 2-hander tank.  And, he can do quite well if you respec him out of some useless talents he starts off with.  His special sustained ability is really what makes him work.

Why should there be moret tanks, if even one isn't needed?
They probably implemented just one for the die-hard tank-dps-heal setup fans.

You've obviously never been a mage getting swarmed by rage demons... Aveline's "Taunt" ability alone saved my butt more than once.  High armor, CON, and defensive talents?  Yeah, I'll take that.  Most of the fights can't be won by simply spamming powerful attacks and letting the enemies run around fighting whoever they want to.  Then again, that's what difficulty levels are for.

A sword and board is most ideal but you can spec a tank from a two-hander.

Actually, you can. Nightmare is won incredibly easily with a 2h warrior AOE monster with no tanking talents.

Used Fenris as 2H AOE tank ever since I got him on first playthrough.

Tanking is not such a big deal anyway because of the waves - pretty much impossible to taunt them all, so it becomes a matter of someone with reasonable HP giving each one a good whack to keep them interested while they get burned down. 2H warrior can do the whacking and the burning down at the same time.

Fenris's aoe really helps! You can just rush across the battlefield quickyl hitting everything and with his own talents he gets great magic resit and a nice stun.

In Nightmare, you have to take her if your character can't tank, because she's the only Sword & Shield option...

yah and stunning removes the aggro from the enemies. so if you are use a lot of stuns, petrify, ice, etc. you could essentially use tons of AOE attacks

On the harder difficulties, Fenris functions as an off-tank at best. He is not as durable as Aveline, though he certainly packs a bigger punch as a 2H tank.

I doubt it. I went through an entire game on Hard without a tank and without a healer, it was mostly a cakewalk. So I can imagine using Fenris as a tank or trying a party without a tank on Nightmare. In fact, there are other threads where individuals mentioned that they were going to try a party with 2 rogues, 2 mages on Nightmare. Or 3 Mages 1 Rogue-tank, so on. They seem to be having a decent time of it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it'd be far easier with a tank, or especially an Aveline or Hawke tank, but it is definitely doable without a tank, even without a healer.

Yeah I figured out Aveline not even needed for nightmare all you need is a healer, Rogue for locks and potions... so any warrior can play tank with the correct build.

Sure, but I think Aveline makes things easier in most cases, since you can make her immune to everything annoying, and she also gets huge damage reduction.

Yeah it will be harder of course but the OP like me does not want same party again so just saying it is possible to do without her.
