Tanking has never been a strong suit of dragon age, its always been overshadowed by 2-hander classes. They have a bigger stam pool to launch threat at multiple targets instead of 50-80% of your stam going towards maintaining defensive role thats not really needed.
the only place that was truely worth it to tank was with "Arcane/Blood Mages" in Origins.

Fenris is a pretty decent tank with his spec powers.

Of the 5 companions that everyone has access to.

Anders is the only healer and elemental mage, other then Hawke.
Merrill is the only primal and blood mage, other then Hawke.
Aveline is the only S/B tank, other then Hawke.
Fenris is the only 2h warrior, other then Hawke.
Isabella is the only DW rogue, other then Hawke.
Varric is the only ranged rogue, other then Hawke.

You forgot Sebastian although he is inferior to Varric for sure.

I hope whatever new DLC character we get next is a mage that can heal. I really don't like Anders and Merrill doesn't even have the Creation tree!

so far (im only level 9) i ve gone with -

stonewall + bullwark
fenris's defensive talents in his tree as a priority. they look great
quite a few of the 2-h skills as i think along with a mage doing brittle will be good
i'll decide on the other 'defender' tree talents later if i think fenris's tree isnt enough.
i've found barrier(mage spell) helpful as well

anders is my mage , mainly healer and CC along with the cold spells for brittle. Early days yet though.

I thought the emporium came with my game, however, I have no idea how to access. I was under the impression I already downloaded it, but I guess not if I can't find it.

If you installed the emporium, you need to read the letter you get about it on your desk, then it will appear on your map.

With careful planning of your abilities, tactics (or a lot of micro management), and positioning I am certain that you could tank with Fenris quite easily. Isabella might do fairly well, and Merril -- well I'm not so sure about her but it seems possible though the challenge would be fierce. Hawke can easily tank as a 2h warrior as well as sword and board and might manage fairly well himself as a duelist. The less stout your tank though the greater the need for an emphasis on crowd control, favourable terrain, and kiting.

yah I been looking at her tree for a future playthrough and I am tempted to "tank" her as well but kind of want to see someone else do it or attempt it first.

I'm on Act 2 Hard on my first playthrough and I'm getting along just fine with Fenris as tanks using mainly his personal spec and defender trees. The Ancient Rock Wraith took a fair few retries however...

is it correct that using stone wall just makes you stand there like a statue? i was surprised with this and made me worry about how good it would be for fenris . Think the skills still very useful?

Yes and yes.
If he aggros an assassin activating improved stone wall will completely block the backstab.
If you're swamped by melee enemies taunt them, activate stonewall, then wail on them with the rest of your party, once stone wall wears of use Fenris' AoE stun to clear the threat your party just built up, then unleash all your two-hander talents.

A friend of mine has played through with Fenris as his tank and said he can do so very well and do a lot of damage but the key is some of the talents in his skill tree. I havent done this so i dont know for sure.

While I do not like the Aveline character I do like her as a tank. Her upgraded shield bash (i think) does an amazing job at staggering multiple opponents and then Merrill's Chain Reaction (chain lightening upgrade) with a +600% vs. Staggered multiple opponents has enemies dying in droves all around me.

she is certainly a great tank and i stumbled upon that combo and use it alot . But as tank is so important it would be nice to have more than one option.

If you can keep fenris alive then use fenris as a tank all the time. I think he is a better tank when there is multiple people while aveline is better if it is a boss.

Fenris tanking style is to kill all the enemies has fast as he can. A tank focuses on getting all aggro and minimizeing (spelling sry) damage. Fenris does it with death while aveline does it with perks and sustained skills.

ALL warriors are tanks in DA2 since they significantly reduced their damage-dealing abilities. Fenris(or Carver) make better tanks than Aveline because
1.They generate more threat than she does(without using abilities to draw threat)
2.Their abilities grant them magic resistance

I just finished another nightmare playthrough, and realized that past a certain point adding points to strength stops significantly effecting dps, so I ended up putting a lot more points into Fenris' constitution than usual. If you can keep him a live, Fenris is considerably more useful than Aveline because he has a chance to stagger multiple opponents with each swing, setting up combos for your mage(s). So I'd spread the damage between him, a high constitution, rock armored Merrill, my dog, and my rogue Hawke's decoy. Between him and my archer Hawke disorienting everybody with criticals, I was hearing that awesome combo noise all the time.

For the final sequence of the game though Fenris drops from the party, and I ended up using Merrill as a pseudo-tank as I was pretty bored with Aveline, in combination with my dog and decoy. So archer Hawke, Isabella, Merrill, and Bethany (autocasting haste as often as possible.) That party tore through things faster than any other I've had, and I've probably played through the game about ten times now.
