First of all, let me apologize ahead of time if this thread has been done a million times. I would think that it has been but I could not find any so here I am. With that being said, lets get down to business. I am wondering, what do you fellow Dragon Age 2 players feel is the best class and spec for a nightmare playthrough? I have beaten the game with a two handed warrior on normal and I am currently playing on Hard with my mage. I do plan on playing through it again with a rogue, but I am more then willing to postpone my rogue playthrough for a nightmare difficulty playthrough.
What do you guys feel is the best class and spec as well. Rogue assassin? Rogue archer? Sword and Board warrior, elemental mage, ect. I know the specs are not as simple as I listed them but it was just for noted.
Anyway, feel free to speak your mind. All opinions are welcome. Any suggestions and thoughts are much appriciated.

playing nightmare mode on my mage now specced him DD for FF reasons. My main problem is my tanks aoe attacks hitting each other.
Best spec play through would be a range character (archer, mage) reason being while you are switching to keep your tanks apart from each other your toon can fire away. IMO

I've been using a tactic that's worked out quite well. I'm about 20 hours into the play through on nightmare difficulty. Hawke is spec'd as a two-hander with reaver class speciality, currently lvl 11. I run with Varic (skills spec'd mostly for crowd control/disable), Bethany (skills spec'd for elemental dmg + healing with nearly all points into magic), Anders (skills spec'd for healing/buffing and earth/lightning skills).
For most battles, I can play through on first attempt. Some of the more difficult battles require a number of play throughs. I "hold" command my team and keep them far back, usually at a choke point where the reinforcements would not be popping up behind them. Hawke is geared with items that give him high fire/lightning resistance. Hindsight belt, some ammy that gives willpower and large resistance boost, similar with rings and other gear. I also have Sten's Might 2-hander on him. I have the bulk of my points in STR with some in CON. The tactic involves running Hawke into the middle of everything so he can unleash hell with his two-hander aoe attacks. Meanwhile, Anders buffs Hawke from afar and drops AOE tempest on top of him. Bethany drops Firestorm, Fireball, and then distributes the rest of her single target spell damage amongst the stronger baddies. Both Bethany and Anders heal Hawke as required.
Usually, this brings Hawke's hp down to the 30% range within the first 5 seconds of the battle. His high resistances to fire and lightning allow him to stand in the middle of Tempest, Firestorm, and whether hits from Fireball without taking much spell damage. His high STR provides fortitude to resist knockdown/stagger. At low range hp, his reaver class spec + two-hander AOE skills boosts his damage on multiple targets into the WTF range.
I use Varic to keep the baddies pinned, disoriented, etc... so they take continuous damage in the middle of Tempest and Firestorm and so they don't get close to my range support group. If any baddies do break off and head toward my mages/rogue, Varic is in charge of slowing them down and I retarget my mages to stonefist and winter grasp/freeze them. For the most part, this is enough to prevent my range support group from getting swarmed while Hawke brings down the hammer like the bad **** he is. And since Hawke is laying down so much dmg, he usually picks up last hit on the baddies which is great for keeping his stamina up.
There are a few battles where I have to pull back my group to rear staging areas due to the directions the 2nd/3rd wave reinforcements come from. If my support group gets swarmed, I'm pretty much dead. Indoor battles can sometimes get tricky as the enemy reinforcements come from every which way and there isn't always an unflankable location with a choke point to situate my range support team at. Depending on the situation, it means I have to shift my support team location through the battle at key timing points based on when the reinforcements come in. After a few play throughs on the battle though, I eventually win as it becomes subsequently much easier if I know exactly when and where the reinforcements come from.
Sometimes, on the longer battles when I have no mana/stamina left and there's just 1 or 2 baddies left, I can use my range support to snipe while Hawke runs circles to keep from getting hit. Occassionally, I'd stop Hawke to fight a bit in order to maintain aggro on him. But this works well enough to mop up the especially tanky baddies. Especially since I keep a frost staff on Anders and have him elemental weapon enchant my team.
