Curiosity. I wanted to experiment with the game, and how it was scripted to handle origins. Mostly, I wanted to see how it would handle a mage with a different origin, knowledge that might come in handy for modders interested in creating new origins.
So, I created a female human noble, turned her into a mage, and played the game with the intent of making her Queen. As far as I could tell, this was the ending that required triggering the most origin-related dialogue, and I wanted to test as many as I could on a single playthrough.
Aside from that, people in the old forum were asking about it, but nobody else wanted to be the first person to actually try it. I did, and shared the results.
I also think a lot of people here might be interested. From what I hear, Alistair won't marry a non-noble mage. Well, here's your answer to that little dilemma!
2) Did you succeed?
Yes. I beat the entire game, and got the ending I wanted.
3) How do you turn your character into a mage?
I created a human noble warrior, and used the console command runscript wizard at the end of the opening dialog. This transformed her into a stock level 2 wizard with the Quickplay setup and a few meager mage items. If this bothers you, you'll have to respec your character somehow.
4) Won't this break the game?
A little, yes. That's the idea. The only way for me to study how it breaks was to break it. I wouldn't suggest doing this on your first playthrough, though.
5) Won't the game stop working when you hit a class/origin related dialogue trigger?
No. To my knowledge, there is no point where the dialogue can crash the game. The dialogue system seems to be set up in a way that checks to see if a response is valid before displaying it. You might not even technically need a class or origin to complete the game. For instance, there is a possible reply very early in the City Elf origin, "My mother was a great warrior/cunning rogue", which does not have a mage alternative. This line will simply not show up, but all the alternative answers will, so the game will continue.
6) Will I still have my original origin?
Yes. The game defaults to your original origin. Human nobles will still be human nobles after changing their class, just as city elves will still be city elves. My character was recognized as a Cousland throughout the entire game without a single problem. Any time class-related dialogue appears, you will be acknowledged as a mage.
7) Will I have to play the mage origin?
No. Your regular origin will play out as normal, except that you are a mage.
8) Are there any bugs?
Yes. The first bug you will notice is that all your Collector's Edition/DLC items will be gone. I think disabling your DLC will prevent that.
More seriously, however, is that some of the class-triggered dialogue in the game refers to events in the mage origin. Specifically, characters in the Circle of Mages quest will recognize you. This is the result of some apparently lazy scripting on Bioware's part.
However, while it's very bad news for modders, it shouldn't effect the game too much if you just want to play through it as a noble with magical powers. Maybe the Circle took your character young, and then returned her, after some significant "donations" to the Chantry from Highever? I don't think that's really too unreasonable a justification.
The ending might also have been a little buggy. I honestly couldn't tell, because it's pretty buggy even without the console.
9) But I can become King/ romance Alistair and become Queen, right?
Yes.
10) I hate the console, and everyone who uses it is a cheater and that personally offends me!
That's nice dear, now go play outside while the grownups are talking.
11) Can you absolutely promise that this will work for me?
No. I can't promise that the console won't break the game any more than Bioware can. However, a lot of those warnings are rather disclaimer-y. If you know what you are doing, I don't see any real reason why it shouldn't work for you.
12) Can I be a dwarf mage?
I haven't tested that, but I kinda doubt it. Proceed with caution, and don't yell at me if it doesn't work. On the other hand, if you want to try it, feel free to tell me how it goes.
Anyone with any other questions, feel free to ask.
