Everyone:

I lost Bethany to the Blight illness because I took her with me into the Deep Roads. As I'd grown rather attached to that character, it sort of, well, pissed me off.

Can Bethany be saved if you *don't* take her into the Deep Roads? Or is this some pre-ordained outcome?

I've got one save from before the expedition and, frankly, I'm half-tempted to use it, even though I'd lose nearly six hours of progress.

You can save her if you don't bring her(she gets captured by the Templars and taken to the circle), or if you bring Anders with you as well(she becomes a grey warden).

It's worth noting though that although you save her life, you will still lose her as a companion no matter what happens. She will be playable again for the final mission, but that's it.

*sigh* Well, at least it's not a pre-ordained outcome that she must die at that point in the game. I don't know if I want to keep playing without her. I know, it's just a game, but still.

Can you tell me, in a generally non-spoilerish nature, if Bethany has any significant plot contributions post-Deep Roads expedition?

you see her 3 more times before the end, fighting/coming to her rescue twice

You can save by not bringing her with you, and she gets captured by the mage circle, or if you have Anders in the party when your in the deep roads she will turn into a gray warden, but never seen again..

I see. So while it's not pre-ordained that she must die, it is pre-ordained that you lose her no matter what for the latter half of the game.

I suppse something similar happens with Carver.

No, if your sibling becomes a warden they will come back for a mid-game scene and the endgame battle.

ETA:  beaten to it!

My character is going to miss her sister Bethany until the day she dies. At least, that's how I intend to play it, if I continue the current game.

Do your character's other companions acknowledge the loss of Bethany/Carver, and the impact it has on your character? Or is it glossed over?

I'm curious because, in game, three years pass between the end of Act I and the start of Act II. Yet, IRL, the player is most likely still quite emotional about it, one way or another.
