Sebastian got 100% crit against flanked foes and both of them get extra dmg from enemies not engaging them. Varric's Nameless Graces is an instant burst kill, Sebastian's chain breaking attacks (Wounding Arrow and Arrow of Judgement) are as OP as it gets.

The Archery/Bianca trees get a lot of cross class combos from brittled enemies, + the speed sustainables are kinda neat.

The two of them can pretty much kill every normal mooks by just auto attacking on Nightmare.

Of course, no one claims he sucks utterly. The issue is his personal tree, while superficially impressive, is of much less use (in any party setup I can think of) than Sebastian's. On NM, at least. My main point is if you want an archer, he is your third best choice, after Hawke and Sebastian  

People that think he's OP or consider 300-1000 end-game crits a good thing should really try out a properly built archer Hawke. Or Sebastian, if they are so inclined. Again, Varric is not bad, just clearly worse than other ranged rogue options available.

^^^Varric's tree is amazing because it makes his auto-attacks deadly so even when he has no stamina or you aren't babysitting him, Varric kills things quickly.

I take varric over sebastian the fail anyday, because
A) I don't have to babysit Varric 24/7 (Something you need to do with retarded Bestian because of the R.Chain, most of the time he will just waste the fully built up R.Chain on crap if you dont babysitt him all the time even with properly setup tactics)
Varric at least has a likeable personality, where as bestian is utherly boring.
C) Bastian again eats dirt faster then varric if you dont babysitt him all the bloody time

I used to think Varric was clearly the superior archer companion, but now I'm inclined to side with Sebastian. If you want to just set up tactics and never bother controlling your companions, Varric will do a bit better, but Sebastian has much more potential.

If you want to go through the trouble of positioning enemies with your tank, Sebastian's backstab ability will go a long way towards equalizing their autoattack dps. Likewise, if micromanaged properly the -45% damage resistance from Wounding Arrow beats out anything Varric brings to the table on elites or bosses. Varric is also held back by being unable to equip any of the best bows. Bianca is good enough, but she gets outclassed by late game.

Varric has the highest DPS in my party. He's good. I'm going without a mage, so I'm using him a lot for crowd control and AoE, which works just fine. Good archer.

There is no such thing as 'bad archer' in DA2. They all are good, it's just that archer Hawke is much better than Varric in every possible way, while Bastian has access to the second best debuff in the whole game, a Decoy with built-in 10s Stealth (I have absolutely no idea how people claim Varric is safer: just chaining upgraded Stealth > Guardian Angel > Stealth should let you stay out of any trouble), and a good single-target nuke with 3.7 damage factor (Varric's Triplet is 0.56, for comparison's sake). Not to mention you can just dump every single attrubute point into Cun in his case because of Maferath's Advance and Righteous Chain. 

Now, as an auto-attacker, Varric is much better, but using an archer rogue for auto-attacking is only marginally viable on NM.

As a side note: if Varric has the highest dps in your party, something is wrong with that party (either you use lower-quality weapons and Bianca outperforms them because of auto-scaling, or your characters aren't built/geared properly). No offense.
