Anyone else not fond of it? Does the upgrade change it?
I am doing a Warrior Hawke but may skip it just for that and it also lowers DPS which means lower threat.

It definitely factored into my decision to 2 hand tank, fun factor =D. So far the tradeoff in offense to defense hasn't really hurt me much.

The animation changes to show why you do less damage. There is some logic to it, where your character is meant to change to a "turtling up" stance where only quick thrusts are done while the shield remains in place.

Of course, the effect is ruined by the exaggerated shield movements. :)

As for gameplay, I think shield defense is extremely useful for tanking, once you do get aggro. Also, keep in mind that +% damage modifiers are additive, which means that using cleave (that grants +100% damage) still adds its full bonus to damage. So while using shield defense and cleave, you still do roughly 175% damage. Using assault in that can is often enough to take and keep aggro.

This is especially true if you prime it with a taunt.

When i started my warrior he was suppose to be a 1h/shield tanker, but after going through the talents i just couldent bring myself to do it, i mean most of the talents make you a worse tank if anything shield defense should give you a HUGGGGE boost in threat but naaaah they slap a 25% reduced dmg penalty on it, so i went with 2h offensive tank instead seems to work out just as good if not better :/

That's why you get other things to get your damage... sword and board also makes you immune to flank and crits. That means I don't need to even turn on shield defense until something actually threatening shows up. And even then I invested in vanguard enough to give me some beefy DPS options.

As it is, as a DPS sword and board tank I managed to tank the deep roads rather well.

Agree, Bioware did a nice job of opening up an option for an offensive S&S warrior...just don't turn on Shield Defence unless your back is against the wall.

That's one reason why I'm starting my S&B warrior. The 1st time I specced to Shield Defense and it just wasn't fun for me.

But I understand why Bioware did it. It is called Shield Defense after-all.

Restore normal animation when Shield Defense is activated.  (No more poke, poe, poke.)
