first my char http://social.biowar...racter_id=37726

I never really studied character builds for this or DA:O so Im probably building pretty ****ty. whatever.

Im 27 hours in right now, but havent done the expedition.  I think ive pretty much done every sidequest and I think I have 1 more main quest thing left to do but I was stuck on it and I cant remember exactly which one it is.

Ive been playing on nightmare the entire time, some of the fights ive had to retry like 25+ times (omg loading lol)

This is my group:

Me:  Mage, Primarily Elemental, firestorm, crushing prison, force spec.  NO HEALING
Carver: 2 hand beast (tho im pretty sure he continually murders my group on nightmare haha), no taunt
Aveline: sword/shield.  Tank spec.
Varric: He does a lilttle CC, nice auto attack damage, usually dies haha.

I tried to bring merril along, loaded up like a controller/debilator instead of varric I believe one time and it didnt help.

So as you can see ive been going with no healing, just using the elfroot pots and health pots.  I hardly ever live through a fight the first time. Had a lot of trouble with the Qunari guys because of their resistance to fire.  Also a **** of the time fighting the templars, tho I think I beat this one last night.

Will I be able to keep going with this group? (no spoilers please)  I really dont want to take a heal as the main character.  So far Ive been having a blast.  I kinda wish i was playing on hard tho so i could see carver just WRECK.

ok and i guess two quick questions 1) where can you buy regular health pots 2) all characters get xp after a right even if they were dead, correct? (and a cavaet, it looks like + experience items work for the whole party?)

Thanks guys!  Really loving the game so far with this group, kinda living dangerously.  These damn waves just kill me on nightmare though, and dont get me started on the Tempar Hunter...

I'd dump one of the warriors personally (I could say more but I won't spoil it). Also research cross class combos (official guide or dragon age wiki site) and figure them out. You can always have Anders be healer and your Hawke can go controller and dps. You'll probably need to keep Varric for his dps which can be pretty good if built right.

I ran with that party for a long time on Nightmare, although I was primal focused, not elemental. Once I got Merrill (probably level 7ish) I dumped Carver, and, then around level 10, I dumped her for Anders and his healing.

You don't *have* to go with the standard party setup of tank, rogue, DPS, too. Just for kicks I just cleared a warehouse (spawned 1 assassin + 1 reaver twice) without any warriors at all. Did it with Isabela, Varric, my mage and Anders. It was not easy, especially now that the assassins are hitting my characters with poison, but I got through it.

It's all a matter of preparing for the fight...

My guess is, though, at some point you're going to want to dump a warrior for some healing, just to make it a little easier on yourself.

Well if you are dieing a lot in battle, Anders maybe someone to swap with sense he can get the ability to revive fairly quickly.  I know it's been helping me in the longer battles.

Also the revive raises the entire group no matter where they are located.  Unlike Origins where it was and aoe effect.

I'm sure it's possibly to keep going with your setup.  Imo usually the more warriors the easier it is.  I would think 4 tanks would just own on any difficulty.  It would be like a freight train.  :P

carver absolutely wrecks **** for me. i mean he is by far the most powerful character when im playing with him compared to my others (well besides the mage, but she behaves well by herself). I dont have good tactics for carver and he always obliterates my team if i dont babysit him so i usually control him. Plus he can solo if my party dies and theres only 1 or 2 guys left. I really wanna try like a group with 3, 2 hand warriors without friendly fire =P

Haha and thanks to the guy with the spoiler without a spoiler, oh well. Ok if you can get Anders as a mage then im all set, will be hard for me to pick between varric and carver. Varric is better behaved (except now that he has that one skill that hits everything between him and his target), but carver is a death dealer so far. I guess i was just worried that I wouldnt be able to find another mage to be a healer, as Merril was not one. Guess I'll just have to work on getting Anders, im guessing that's the only quest i have remaining right now.

ok, im going to have to say this group has been defeated during Tranquility. I played the fight yesterday for 4+ hours straight haha, and a little the night before.

I turned off the tactics for AE attacks and whirlwind and stuff to make sure I wasnt killing my team. That helped a little. I also backed out to a previous save and bought poisons for everyones weapon (one half crow the other half debilating). I would kite back and forth as soon as the first wave ended, and whenever the hunter would stealth.

I was able to come close a few times to beating it. One time, I had my full party left (with potions remaining) against just the Lieutenant and the Hunter. Lost. Another time I had everyone up but Hawke, against ONLY the hunter and still lost even with kiting him. I mean these situations were always up to luck and happened if Anders managed to hold the aggro of a bunch of the mobs while I was running around downstairs.

Lol and then another time I had some sort of crazy bug where everyone was dead but Ave and she would regen health super fast but so would the enemies. I seriously spent like 50 minutes mashing x and finally took down the Lt and was working on some of the other mobs when I accidentally looted something and it stopped the bug and I promptly died haha.

I Also tried respecing Hawke to full heals with the Maker's Sigh. This caused some sort of bug though. It didnt get rid of all my previous spells. So being full healer spec'd with firestorm was amusing. This worked after a few fights, but my character was all bugged with their abilities. I took another Makers Sigh and I had like 6 extra ability points to spend than I should have. I didnt want to continue on like that (whats the point of playing on nightmare, then?) so I went back to trying to win with my original Hawke.

Finally I switched the fight to hard and won in 2 tries but didnt save, Im trying to think of what to do for tonight. I think I pretty much gave it the ole college try and was denied. I mean I messed with the tactics, tried different strategies, and tried the same fight for like 6+ hours. Without a huge stroke of luck (and I dont even know what that would be because I cant even kill the hunter with 3 of my people). Doesn't look like I can respect without some sort of bug happening etc....

Are there any trophies for playing the game all the way thru on nightmare? Otherwise I think im just going to change it to hard (at least for this fight) and stop beating myself up over it because it clearly is unbalanced for my party.

Any one have any last ditch suggestions? I tried bringing Merril before and it didnt work well. Maybe switch out Av for a 2 hand spec'd Fenris? I dunno I cant really get over the fact that I got down to 4 v 2 and 3 v 1 on two separate occasions and really didnt have a shot at winning.

This, swap one of your mages or Varric for Anders and use him for healing and reviving. I made it to the Deep Roads in Nightmare and I don't think I would be able to make it to the end of the game without Anders' Regroup spell.

He also has access to the Primal school which allows him to do some serious cross class combo damage.

lol thanks, but if you read the novel i typed out prior to your post, my problem is i saved getting anders for last and its basically impossible for me to win the fight =P

Theres no trophies tied to staying on nightmare difficulty, is there any other bonuses? Otherwise im just gonna put it on hard for this fight. Maybe keep a save at this point so I can go back and mess around. Its always gonna bother me I couldnt win the fight tho =P

I certainly didn't get any special trophies, but I wasn't online at the time and I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.  I encourage you to stick wtih Nightmare though, it made the game a lot more satisfying for me.  Also, it does get easier the farther you get (at least it did for my dagger rogue); Act 1 on Nightmare is one of the most difficult things I've ever done.

yeah its straight up the last thing i have left to do and I cant do it. i spent 2 days trying. i think its kinda acceptable to put this one fight on hard and then back to nightmare =P

makers sigh screws stuff up, so i cant go with that. I mean i got the templar hunter down to 3 v 1 and still died, while cheesing the AI so.....

In the Chantry battle on Nightmare, retreat as far back as possible towards the door to some sort of choke point. Anders will keep fighting some of the templars on the upper level as a sort of tank, and he is invincible.

Use Avelline as a second tank protecting your mages and Carver supporting Avelline.

Also, Petrify or Glyph of Paralysis on the Hunter is your friend. I suggest to go with Avelline, Carver and Merril for this battle. Chain Lightning is very handy for Nightmare.

Can you do any cross class combos yet?
- Petrify or Stone Fist upgraded for either mage?
- Mighty Blow upgraded for Carver?
- Shield Bash upgraded for Avelline?
- Any cross class attacks that increase damage vs. BRITTLE or STAGGERED opponents?

im not too sure about all the class combos, i dont think so im at work right now. i think mighty blow is upgraded. I only used merril once just for this fight and forgot what i specced her as exactly i think the tree with the hexes.

I dont really have too much of a problem of getting thru the fight and moving my characters around. I got to just the 2 bosses left with a full group, just dont have the firepower or the healing to bring it home.

In my opinion (although I am playing on hard myself) the best group structure is: Yourself, playing as a tank, I am using Lion of Orlais, notched blade and blood dragon armor, then have Bethany as a part healer, part elemental, she is a valuable member of my team, SPOILERSPOILERSPOILER, pity she has to die when I take her to the deep roads. Anyways, I then use Varric as a ranged dps, and also using sabotage abilities, Finally, I use Anders as a maxed out healer. I seem to win every fight.

If you can use the upgraded versions of either Petrify or Winter's Blast (either your mage or Merril) to make the Hunter or Lieutenant BRITTLE and then hit them with Carver's upgraded Mighty Blow, he will deal massive damage (also use a poison on his weapon if necessary).

Does Maker's Sigh have the same glitch if you give it to one of your companions to drink (for example, Merril)?

and i mean at that point, youre using an item that is super cheap and not available in the first game. i think thats almost cheating anyway. Im still voting for 'hard' for this fight and moving on with my life lol i put a whole night off into it!

i gave up last night on nightmare =P Im at like 35+ hours on my playthru and still in the first chapter too many deaths haha. I started playing on hard and it was a lot more fun with this group. I like firestorm and whirlwind apparently and its tough to micromanage as much as I would like to on the console.. When I do a 2nd playthru ill try for nightmare and plan my group out.

Probably on hard, but not on nightmare. Friendly fire would make an all warrior group extremely difficult to play. You'd be spending most of your time trying to keep everyone from killing each other. A misplaced mighty blow or scythe can 1-shot even a pretty tough warrior.

I had to do the retreat--far-away trick with Tranquility the first time I played it but beat it straight up the second time now that I know more about the mechanics. The main concern there is that if you leave the Lieutenant alive, he will keep redirecting all the templars to go after your ranged support so you can't maintain aggro control and it throws off your positioning (especially bad because if you have poor positioning when the Hunter shows up you'll start losing people). Just kill the lieutenant first before the second wave. If there's just the hunter to deal with you can easily stonewall the backstabs without putting your mages and archers in danger.

you beat the lieutenant before the 2nd wave on nightmare?

I'm pretty sure the second wave with the hunter doesn't appear until you've killed at least one or two of the templars in the first wave, so if the lieutenant is your first target you should be able to focus on him without worrying about it.
