It's my understanding from my multiple playthroughs that it is impossible to keep your Sibling companion (Bethany/Carver) past act 1.

-My first playthrough as a mage, I chose not to bring Carver along so he dicked off and joined the Templar Order. Thus removing him from my list of companions permanantly ( And took the Might of the Sten sword with him -_- )
-Second time as a Warrior, i brought Bethany, and she died, so I'm assuming if I had brought Carver he would have met the same fate...
-And third as a Rogue, I left Bethany and she go roped into the Circle of Magi...

So my question stands : Is it impossible to keep them as a companion throughout the entirety of the game?

From what I've learned, the answer is NO. Nothing you can do keeps them as 100 percent, full-time companions.

The key part there, though, is "100 percent, full-time companions." Under certain circumstances, they do become companions again for periods of time.

If you bring your sibling AND Anders...then you find the grey warden in the deep roads, they join the grey wardens and come back to help you in the final battle.

I had Anders with me aswell and then Carver became infected with the darkspawn taint... and Anders just happened to remember that there were some Grey Wardens nearby. I then met him a few times whenever there were Wardens involved in the quests. But other than that... he just randomly appeared during the last mission to lend a hand.
