Friendship:

- Aveline - Be on the "up and up", don't take any extra rewards, encourage her to strive to be better.

- Fenris - Despises slavers or anyone who mentions slavery as a good thing. I can't remember what options I picked during the talk at his mansion but it provided a decent boost. Bring him along during Wayward Son, he'll have an option to threaten Danzig (+10 iirc); later in the Slaver Caverns, just go for the kill immediately (this will +5 Rivalry to Aveline) and you'll get another nice boost. Make Arianni's son go to the Circle to get another +10 boost (which will +5 Friendship Aveline so you don't have to worry about the earlier +Rivalry). I left all mages out of this quest just in case of Rivalry boosts (2H Warrior Hawke).

- Merrill - Finishing "An Errant Letter" with her in party, keep the Templar's secret when it pops up as a response, this earned me a +10 Friendship boost.

- Isabela - no idea, haven't flirted with her, she won't budge either way.

Choose the "purple" options with Isabela, I think refusing rewards builds rivalry.

Thanks Sun and Snow.
I may add summaries of the characters and their attitudes when I'm finished with the game, or we complied more information.

With Isabela, you win you approval by typically choosing charm / sarcastic choices. Also, if you flirt, it REALLY scores big time friendship points with Bela. She also hates slavers and the mistreatment of mages. If you Mock Qunari, Isabela will love that as well.

- Carver will give +5 approval if you ask for his opinion early on in Kirkwall. It's when someone confronts you about being 'nasty Kirkwallers' and Carver will say 'Maybe you shouldn't threaten *fereldans* like that!'.
- Merril will gain a massive rivalry boost if you refuse to give her the item from the keeper (when you do the varterral slayage). +10 rivalry at the camp and +25 rivalry at her home.
- Both Carver and Aveline will give +5 rivalry if you bring them along to Bait and Switch and tell Anso that you'll get his lyrium back.
- Fenris will give +10 friendship if you give a job to the slave you find during his quest to find Hadrianna (amount of rivalry if you say 'Slaves are useful' is unknown but I presume it's +10 rivalry).

Oh this topic sounds helpful we should keep it bumped. For fenris you get a 10+friendship and I think a 5+ on varric if you ask for money for hiding the templers secret of his daughter being a mage. But you get rivalry with aveline +5

Magister's Request or Magistrate's Orders?

Since the two seem ironically close, and entail killing someone

Another one I found when doing anders quest when you come out of the refuge and the guys accuse you of hating fereldans or something you can ask bethany to talk to them and she proceeds to tell them that there fereldan also which gives her a 5+ on friendship.

I should clarify - Wayward Son:

- Fenris - going for the kill gives +10 Friendship, +5 Rivalry for Aveline. Afterwards, sending the son to the Circle is +10 Friendship for Fenris, +5 Friendship for Aveline.

Sorry if I was unclear.

Sebastian resents you encouraging him to go after his throne and leave the Chantry.

Come on people. This thread could very well be the basis of some good playthroughs, or to the advantage of roleplayers.

You're right, I meant magistrates orders, the ones that end with the pedophile.

In general, Isabella and Varric both respond well when you use the "humorous" option in conversation. I maxed out both of their friendships really quickly on my funny guy playthrough. Both are also suckers for money, so demanding rewards and bribes will gain points with them, while giving out money and aid will reduce their friendship.

Merrill responds well to most of the "nice guy" options, with a few big exceptions. When dealing with blood mages or demons, she will gain rivalry if you refuse to listen to them or are uncompromising. Attacking them outright is a quick way to lose her friendship.

Fenris responds positively when you come down hard on mages of all kinds, and negatively when you don't. He's pretty simple like that.

Aveline wants you to support law and order, and responds well to this. This is usually, but not always, the "nice guy" option. Sometimes the aggressive option is best with her, when dealing with criminals.

Anders reacts favorably when you are hard on templar and kind with mages. The exception is that he does not like Blood Magic, and tends to react badly when you deal with blood mages or demons. (This one is kind of hit-and-miss, so save before big confrontations with demons and blood mages to make the right call).

Sebastian usually reacts positively to almost any use of the diplomatic choices, especially when dealing with the chantry or templars. He's hard on mages, but not nearly to the extreme of Fenris. There are of course exceptions. Also, you can gain a free +10 friendship with him by asking the Grand Cleric for her blessing with him in the party (only works once).

Here's also a quick guide for the three party members that deal in magic when it comes up:
Being angry towards demons/blood mages: +Anders, +Fenris, -Merrill
Being angry towards all mages: -Anders, +Fenris, -Merrill
Being angry towards templars: +Anders, -Fenris, +Merrill
Simply reverse the +/- if you are kind instead of angry. The other party members tend to vary a bit, and so this guide is less useful for them.

+15 rivalry with Isabela and +10 rivalry with Merrill if you tell Isabela that you're giving the relic to the Qunari. If you tell her that she can have it then you get the same amount of approval for both in friendship instead.

Also thank you for starting this list, will come in very handy!
