I dueled him as a Warrior with Sword and Shield.
So I dont know how the fight with a group goes, bring health and stamina potions, kill all weaker foes first while keeping a tank on him. Thats how I took out the High Dragon my first play through.
Did it on normal.

I beat him in single combat as a mage. I found it easy to dodge him until he rushes you, then use ice spells to slow him and attack until he speeds up again. Repeat until dead.

Thank you will try both.

Shackling Hex + Despair + Dessicate = permanent Arishok shutdown. Just hack him away at your leisure and throw in a Winter's Grasp every now and then.

I dueled him as a healer mage hawke on normal. Fight took over an hour because most of the damage came from the dog. Had arcane shield, healing aura and heroism active; cast paralyzing aura when it was up. Mind blast also worked to stun him; otherwise all dmg came from dog or auto-cast with staff. Couple rough spots were getting caught in a corner/wall and I still had kite around the pillars to keep the charge from connecting. Overall, was pretty painful because it took so long, but the fight wasn't very challenging.

If all else fails, just use the "run around in circles like an idiot until your mana bar refills" tactic. The dude'll never be able to catch up to you.

I ran around until he charged. After charging, I'd cast gravitic ring so that he was stuck in the center. Then tempest. Then crushing prison. Then horror. Then I'd have time to attack once or twice with the staff before running away until he charged again. It took about 15-20 minutes because he has so many damn potions.

respec to get petrify and horror, spam those, attack him while paralysed, run while he can move.
