Isabela: She acctually wanted to fight the Arishok one on one, which is badass. She's also hilarious, and Anders is right, behind all the sarcasm and provoking violence, she's acctually a real softie.
Varric: He is to DA2 what Wrex was to ME1, the awesomely funny team mate, who you think at first you'll have problems with, but ends up being probably the best friend you can make in the whole group.
Honorable Mention: all of them, I like the companions in the game a lot, although Carver definately pisses me off a lot when I play a mage.

I have three:
Humorous Male Archer Rogue: Varric, Isabela (Friendship LI), Anders {No tank!}
Diplomatic Male Mage: Sebastian, Merrill (Rivalry LI), Aveline {No blood magic!}
Aggressive Female 2H Warrior: Fenris (Friendship LI), Isabela, Varric {She hates mages.}
As for which characters I like personally, I was genuinely heartbroken by Anders, and that impressed me a lot. Kudos to the writing team on that one. I love the rivalry with Merrill, as it's actually a good thing: Helping her get away from demons and such. And I really, really like Varric, as I'm a sucker for always taking along the "humorous" character (see my sig).

Avaline: The other normal one, She's tough and sticks up for you!
Fenris: Cause my hawke loves his broodyness hehehe

I suppose, if I had to choose, it'd be (by a small margin) Varric, Fenris and Aveline. Varric just has it all so... together. Fenris is compelling, and always has me excited about and surprised by what he's going to say and do next. And Aveline is just... I don't know exactly what it is about her, I just really, really like her. I think she felt like my Hawke's older sister at times, and after being the constant big sister to her family, those moments were appreciated.
But Anders comes in a very close second. And Isabela. And Merril and Seb, and... you get the point.

I'm right there with you, Poison! I think this is probably my favorite RPG ever. In no other game have I played musical chairs so much with my team. My top three are the same as yours, also by a slim margin. It's funny that I didn't even have Aveline in the majority of my team-ups, but she was always there when I needed her the most. Big sis, indeed. The interaction between the Arishok, Isabela, and Aveline is one of my favorite moments in the whole game.PoisonTheCity wrote...
I... I can't choose! I was very surprised to realize that I absolutely love them all, with very different reasons for each.

The Arishok: "We will return with the Tome, *and* the thief who stole it!"
Isabela: "What?!"
Aveline: "No, no, no... if anyone is going to kick her ass, it's going to be me."

1. Varric - He is comical and has great banter with my character whether playing as the goodie or the humourous Hawke (you also feel the growth of there friendship overtime)
2. Isabella - She reminds me in a way with Miranda from ME2 she acts like an ice queen but really she is a loving person and you do learn more and more from her (the main difference between her and miranda is that she has more of a sense of humour) and its comedy when she meets people from dragon age: origins especially zehran
3. Merrill - I dislike her appearance but I find her comical for her innocence/dumbness (depends on how you perceive it) and her banter with Isabella and Anders is great. (not tried it with the others really)

01. Sebastian Vael- In my second playthrough he was one of my mainstay companions. I consider him the male Leliana; kind, sweet, spiritual and armed with a bow. I prefer him over Varric in terms of having an archer (he survives better) and I like his backstory and how you can really influence him in different directions. It's a shame he wasn't a full-on romance option though, I would've loved to have my diplomatic templar good-aligned femHawke to become a fellow Chantry sister (or Starkhaven princess). He also has an awesome accent.
02. Fenris- I love him in terms of usefulness (he was a mainstay party member in both of two playthroughs as a heal/dps mage and offensive tank so far) and I like his character concept. He's extremely different from your archetypal elven party member (neither the goody two-shoed ranger protector of humans or mystical mage of old). He's a warrior and a damned good one at that, with the right spec he can tank or become an elven wrecking ball on the battlefield. I just wish he looked a little more like his concept art (he's kinda ugly up close, but that's ok).
03. Aveline- Finally a strong female character that is neither a romance option or looks like a cover model. Gameplay wise she's a damn useful tank and story wise she's loyal no matter what, even if you drive her up a wall and are nasty to her (like my aggressive male mage was) she will stand by you and your decisions in the end. She does have her funny moments too, and I liked her quest when she was courting Donnic (I like matchmaker quests).
Honorable mentions- Merrill (adorable and I absolutely love her accent)
As far as the other two go I haven't had Isabela for long in my two playthroughs so far (the first I rather ignored her and she betrayed me, the second she just fled even though she was a 'friend') and I can't stand Anders for the life of me. They turned a snarky, somewhat amusing mage into an obsessive whiny psycho who does the most unforgivable things in the name of "Justice" (pun intended).
My main parties so far-
Aggressive Male Mage (dps/healing)- Aveline (tank), Fenris (melee dps/off tank), Anders (healing)
Diplomatic Female SnS Warrior (offensive tank)- Sebastian (ranged dps), Fenris (melee dps), Anders (healing)

Nope. I keep finding myself with those three as my party... which is odd, since Fenris and Anders don't exactly play well together, and BOTH have that angsty broody thing going on. You'd think it would be overkill or something, but it keeps drawing me back.
As far as the siblings go... I wound up liking Carver more than Bethany. I was really not expecting that, either. Something about Carver kept making me want to bop him over the head. It was much more an ARGH/sibling thing, and it got to me in a good way.

Merill. Wah ! What a shock and what a surprise to think that.
Fenris. I like him, really very interesting and he speaks well. =)

2. Varric: Best friend forever. Everything he says makes my Hawke smile, and it's good to know that no matter how bad things get, she can go to him for non-judgmental friendship and a mug of ale. Plus, I love how he's looking out for everyone, cheering up Anders, protecting Merrill on her excursions, and keeping Isabella amused and in line.
3. Aveline: level-headed and responsible, but endearingly fallible. She's a good friend to Hawke, even if they don't always agree.

Varric - dwarf bro, 'nough said.
Merrill - Aaawwwww.
The only companion who failed to stand out to me was Fenris, but I also barely took him along in the party, so this is mostly my fault for not giving him enough screentime. Saving that for a latter game, I think.

Anders - I really sympathise with him and respect his values. I felt he had had the deepest relationship of them all, for some reason. Even though I didn't romance him.
Merrill - simply adorable. Plus, she is voiced by the most awesome welshwoman there ever was.
The only ones I never grew to care for that much were Aveline and Sebastian. Varric grew on me, but I got stuck on the friendship/rivalry meter with him and never developed a deeper relationship with him. And Isabela reminds me of Zevran, which made me fall for her.

1. Fenris - Loved him. Loved everything about him. I didn't think I would when I first saw a screenshot of him, but how I was wrong, so very wrong. I loved that he disagreed with Hawke but never disrespected her. I loved that he had convictions and was stubborn and strong and refused to be vulnerable in spite of everything he went through. I loved his maturity, he never acted in the relationship like a petulant child or a lovestruck teenager, he never wanted to make his problems anyone else's, he spoke his mind but he never sounded belittling. He had biases but he took the time to explain them eloquently. I loved that he could carve his way through an army of Lowtown thugs while my mage stood back and watched.
2. Varric - What can you say about Varric? He's the best friend a person could have, period. I wouldn't want anyone else narrating Hawke's story. And honestly, after playing the game... I so would have romanced him, seriously.
3. Merrill - Darn it, I disagreed with everything she said but I couldn't ever be anything but sweet to her. She's like a bunny rabbit. I just wanted to protect her and shield her from the hurt she faced, even though it was her fault! In my mind Merrill became a surrogate for Bethany in my Hawke's eyes.
Of course those three are in a fairly tight race. And Aveline is close behind.
