Fenris: Because he's hot...wait, what? No! Because he's extremely powerful and he's became the number one person I count on in battle.
Aveline: I HATED her at first. Then she became like that older sister I can't get enough of. And she's my tank, love her.
First time I really didn't use mages in a game.

Varric, Anders, Isabela! I always find myself leaning towards the humorous/sarcastic characters, but nothing will replace Morrigan, Alistair, and Shale/Oghren.
I feel like although DA2 had some of the funny, and some really spot on humor, there wasn't as much of it this time around. In DA:O, every single character (except Loghain) had loads of hilarious lines, even if it was just in party banter. I can't think of one companion who didn't make me laugh at least a little.
In DA2, though... Fenris, Sebastian, and Anders just completely felt humorless (which is especially heartbreaking for Anders, who was the funny guy in Awakenings).

Aveline
... blah.
As a mage I would have loved to keep Fenris in my party, from a synergy perspective it was almost necessary however his attitude toward me was wretched. I would have much preferred to keep Carver for longer; he really developed over time.
As a rogue, Anders is almost necessary as the sole healer available but I would have butchered the world merely to have Wynne back.

I feel the same. Also, I said Anders, but frankly he really hasn't been the same character he was in Awakenings.

2) Varric - Varric is a true bro, bro.
3) Sebastian - Shocked that Sebastian isn't mentioned more often. I enjoy Lawful Good aligned characters and Sebastian is pretty much a textbook example of one.
My party rarely does very well with healing.

Avelline is my favorite, though. She's a great take on a female warrior with personality instead of a chainmail bikini. Also, having her and Isabella in the party at the same time is hilarious ("Shut up, ****").
Note: I find it hilarious that the boards edit out quotes from the game :innocent:

Merril - She's god damn adorable. she's interesting because she's super kind hearted and nice, but she uses something that has always been shown as irredeemably evil (blood magic) so it counter balances her in an interesting way.
Aveline - now if you were to say to me before this came out that aveline would be in my top 3 favorite characters i would have called you crazy. a well written tough female character is EXTREMELY rare. i can't even think of another example. she's tough without being overly tough, she's feminine without being over sexualized, shes believable and heartfelt in every possible way.she's got a den mother vibe to her that really suits the rest of the party. not to mention she's absolutely AWESOME gameplay-wise. i should actually make her number one for the sheer fact that i was completely ready to dismiss her as another annoying aggressive "tough girl". really surprised me with how well she was written.

2) Merril - She's cute and evil in the same time, the innocent blood mage :-)
3) Varric - For mostly the same reason as Isabela.
But I just love Bethany ! So sad I couldn't put her in your top 3.
I don't like much Fenris, he could die I don't care. I gladly killed him
You have to bring Isabela with you when you talk to Aveline for her "private" affair, that was really fun to watch !

II. Eh.. Fenris. I hate him and I love doing magey things that outrage him. I hate how absolutely awful he is to Merrill though.
III. A rogue. Doesn't matter which of the three, I dislike all of them (Varric is the least objectionable, I guess).

I alternate meat shields, but I prefer Aveline. But Anders and Varric are always with me.

Well I may start a poll about it but after sometime finishing the game I can say
3. I would say Bethany but I may sound biased and she is just with us as an actual companion in Act one soo I will say Merrill. Yea I know I fell for her cuteness and naiveness but she is smart and talented also. Loving and caring. Willing to do the things for her people even though they might be wrong. She just needs a guidance along the way and my Hawke is happily willing to do it.
In my Game I was able to re-unite with Bethany at the end of the game, that was really great. I deeply missed her after act one
She was very, very useful ! As a second healer she saved my Hawke's ass so many times there. Merril can't heal....

Aveline, Varric and Anders. I will also say there was not nearly enough Carver, I loved that guy.

2 - Varric. My Hawke is female but she had a massive bromance with Varric. He's just so NICE. He genuinely likes Hawke and from what I saw pretty much all the companions. He's light-hearted and witty but can also be serious. I would have loved more and more Varric, I ignored him a lot at the beginning, I don't know why, but by the end he was my best friend. (Also how funny was his little embellishment when you go to get crazy Bartrand. And how spooky is the "Haunted" quest)
3 - Anders. Oh boy, did he ever break my heart, tape it back together and then break it again (and again, and again ...). By the end my Hawke was so madly in love with him she couldn't kill him or even tell him to get lost. He's her broken mage and she's going to find a way to fix him if it takes another 10 sequels!
Cheeky 4 - Carver. I adore my brother, the big jerk. My heart leapt every time I met him on my travels and fell every time he said goodbye again. I was hoping and hoping for a reunion and I got it, thank you!

Varric. Such a good guy, I was really amazed at how he looked out for everyone else.
Isabella. Mostly for the amusement factor. And when she came back, that rocked. Horrible in a fight, though, unless you completely micromanage her, so I eventually stopped taking her with me much.
Of course, Bethany would be first if that was allowed. When she died in my first game I was heartbroken. (Also she could heal, which was nice. I'm not a fan of Anders, but Merrill can't heal...)
Overall I thought they were all well written. Fenris was a complete jerk way too often, but hey, if I went through what he went through I'd be the same way. Use Aveline a lot, especially earlier on, but don't much like her, though I respect her. Anders is a complete wreck, of course, but again, it's understandable why, and his spell casting animations are great.

Aveline. I already liked her personality towards the beginning, but her personal quest with Donnic in Act II sealed the deal for me.
Isabella. I romanced her in my first playthrough, but I didn't really like it - on the other hand, I did really love her personality. Her interactions with the other teammates (particularly Aveline) made it well worth bringing her along.
(But if we had been allowed to choose siblings, Bethany would definitely have been on the list. Even if we did only have her for a short time. Sigh.)

My first run I missed getting Fenris but he has become my third (though he's the first I replace when a quest requires I need another character) since he is an awesome DPS warrior, replacing Carver in Act 2.
Since I play mages A LOT, there isn't any need for the mage NPC's and outside of their quests they really don't see much adventure time.

1. Varric. I think much love went into the development of this character. He shines.
2. Aveline. She seemed dull at first, but later she is subtly and hilariously written.
3. Anders. We weren't full up on crazy. Actually... I just made a mage, knowing nothing of the story. After playing a bit, I decided that the fun path was to romance Anders and fully adopt his views on mages and blood mages, and be a team. And this we did (I ended with Merrill at full rival). That romance was a sad and treacherous road, but their ending as runaways together provided the one sense of fulfillment in an otherwise unsatisfactory conclusion. So that's why he's on this list. Go go tragi-mance!
Starting my next play with a different crew.
