I didn't want to add siblings because they can mess with things a little when you try to decide. I know the siblings are the best option in the Act 1 or at the end battle but you get to see other characters and know them ( their personal quests and such ) a lot more. And lets face it , Bethany is the sweet sister you have and Carver is the Rival one who respects you but also kinda jealous of you. All other companions start from zero soo you decide whether to be friend or rival.

Sorry for taking the option away from you guys ( I know it is hard not to pick them :P )

1: Anders, my two favorite characters in the DA: Origins - Awakening expansion were Anders and Justice.....and in this game they have merged to become one entity! SCORE! Not to mention he's great as a healer/dps.

2: Varric, I love characters who break stereotype...he's a beardless dwarf, who couldn't care less about ancestry and tradition, and loves the surface world over tunnels. Not to mention anyone who names their badass steampunk crossbow "Bianca" and talks to it has my full attention. Plus, besides being awesome ranged dps, wrap your head around this when you are controlling him. You are guiding his actions in a story he is narrating...so who is really in control? BLEW YOUR MIND!

3: Fenris, spiky armored elf infused with lyrium who punches holes through people...win. Also rocks for his two-handed rangetaking down groups fast with his specialization talents.

1. Aveline.  Stuck with me from the moment we met to the very bitter end.  Just a great female warrior character; I loved her from the moment she tackled the Darkspawn that wounded Wesley and punched it into submission before lever-cutting its head off.  That scene defined her character and was all I needed to know.  Even as captain, she had no problems telling authority where to shove it and helped bend rules for the sake of her friends.  She is easily my favorite female character from DAII.  In combat, she is my go-to tank.

2. Varric.  Should this really be a surprise?  How can anyone not like this suave, poetic and genre savvy dwarf?  Prior to playing DAII, I really enjoyed how he interacted with Cassandra and how they are essentially each other's character foils.  But when I first met him in actual gameplay (i.e. the scene where the thief attempts to make off with Hawke's purse)?  Stole my heart.  Like Aveline, he really looks out for the rest of the companions and sometimes goes out of his way to help them (Merrill and Anders being examples).  I had a healthy bromance with him, both as male and female Hawke.  He's great at ranged DPS and his ability to spin a tale at the drop of a hat when I needed to get out of tricky situations makes him a shoo-in for any party make-up.

3. Anders.  This man a train wreck.  And I love it.  He is a well written character and the changes he goes from Awakening to the end of DAII just add a fascinating depth to him.  He's quite a different person than his earlier incarnation from Awakening but his change is not without reason.  A romance with him is what you expect from a man who is severely troubled by himself and the world around him and is one you really have to commit to.  It's a relentless cycle of breaking and mending hearts with him.  He has a permanent place in my party as healer/support mage.  Brittle cross-class combos for the win!

4. Fenris.  Another character with so much depth to him.  He truly felt like a complete character.  (Not to say the other companions weren't, but Fenris' character just really struck a cord with me with how...human he was.)  Never disrespectful even when he disagrees with a situation.  Strong and vulnerable at the same time, he easily has one of the best back stories, and it's worth speaking with him at length and nurturing a relationship whether you're a rival, a lover, or even just simply a friend.  Whenever I couldn't drag Aveline along with me or needed extra power in my party, Fenris was the one I turned to.

Varric, Aveline, Fenris - I played with them exclusively and they seemed like best buds by the end. There were some scenes were they played off one another - it was great. I haven't laughed at gaming dialogue in a long time.

Varric is easily number 1, followed by Merril, for third it's hard to choose between Isabela and Fenris, but I lean more towards Bela.

If I must exclude Carver, which I don't think is fair since he's awesome, then Varric, Fenris, and Aveline.

1. Merrill: Really how could anyone not like a cute elf that dabbles in the dark arts?
2. Can I mention Merrill again?.... no... darn. Seriously though Verric comes in number 2. Seriously, this guy is great. He is funny, ready for action, named his crossbow, tells on hell of a story and is just plain badass.

That's why those two make it into my top two Bioware companions ever.

3. Aveline: A strong female character who has been a great friend for my character since the beginning.

Fenris and Varric have a love hate relationship at the start. Varric always rips on him for being broody - then, they start a rivalry that plays itself over gambling at the Hanged Man. Then Fenris lightens up and starts busting out jokes (albeit 'serious' jokes) and Varric is delighted.

Aveline keeps trying to convince Fenris to be a normal citizen. Fenris keeps trying to get Aveline to continue letting him be a squatter. Fenris admits that Aveline's husband comes over to the mansion to gamble - Aveline's a little annoyed and asks why she's not invited. Fenris says: "Because you get angry when you lose." It's good stuff.

Aveline and Varric are great too - Varric keeps talking about how Aveline scares the **** out of him. Then - he teases her about her love interest - then Aveline starts berating him for the smut romance stories he's telling around town about a female guardswoman. Finally - they end with a great line: "Varric, how are at finales." He goes on to tell her that in his stories his smutty guardswoman will find love and live happily ever after. It's kinda touching.

1. Merrill - Gotta love an elven cutie, and she is a beast when it comes to dps.
2. Varric - Love his stories and his party banter. Really useful in combat too
3. Anders - I would put Bethany here if we weren't excluding siblings. I am actually not a big fan of Anders but he's a well written character and he is the only healer :P

1. Fenris. I practically swoon over Gideon's voice. And I like Fenris' romance and the ability to have Hawke get under his skin. I also like that he says he hasn't needed or wanted anyone until Hawke. Image IPB

2. Isabela. I really enjoy her banter with the others and her interjections. I don't like her selfishness or attitude toward Hawke if you don't agree with her on everything, but she's likeable otherwise.

3. I like Aveline's straightforwardness and I love her Act 2 quest with Donnic.

Including the siblings I really like Carver. And his jerkiness. He gets called out on it a lot by the others.

1. Anders. Yes he's crazy and possessed. He's also the catalyst for the final plot of the game. Plus I romanced him, and the tragic arc it takes is absolutely draining and compelling. It's an emotional roller coaster having him in the party, but I wouldn't have it anyway. Particularly when you start to listen to his banters with other party members, like how he talks to Merrill about having no control when Justice takes over, just being forced to watch (ironic for a man fighting for freedom). What can I say? I'm a sucker for tragedy.

2. Varric. You know, I wasn't expecting to like him all that much. I've never been a dwarf fan in any medium. Oghren was my least favorite character in Origins. And yet...pretty much from the word Go, Varric won me over. He's witty, he's charming, he's absolutely hilarious. I love his relationship with his brother, his character quests, his narration. I love his soft spot for his party members. He's a great character, and I found myself taking him pretty much everywhere because of it. He always has something to say, too, which is a nice touch. I love hearing my companions chime in during conversations, and Varric never disappoints.

3. Aveline. I'm all for tough warrior women who are strong but not without their femininity. Plus, her quest The Long Road was pure gold. I practically choked from laughter countless times. She's also a great moral compass for the game. Though she's definitely law-abiding, she's also willing to go around restrictions for what matters. I liked the dynamic she had with Hawke and her banters with Isabela are priceless.

Varric, of course, he's the best friend a Champion could have. Fenris, if you talent him up just right is fairly badass, though a bit emo, and of course Anders because we're in love.....lol.

Fenris. Fenris. Fenris a thousand times Fenris.

Followed by Aveline, the giant armed amazon of my heart.

As for third...hard to say, I love dragging anders around, Isabella is awesome, Merrill is adorable...I'd say third place is a three way tie between t

Varric and I were like best friends, and he's easily my favorite character in the DA universe to date because his witty humor and roguish nature.
Aveline was like a big sister to me and I have a lot of respect for her stand against corruption in Kirkwall.
Fenris had a pretty good story arch (possibly one of the better ones of all the companions in the game), and him and I got along just fine despite the fact that I'm a mage.

1) Alright i'll go the stereotypical route and say Isabela first. I mean she's a pirate what more do I have to say lol. Yea i know she sleeps around but who cares, dont all pirates. Not to mention I love her attitude and she kicks major butt. She's hot and dangerous a potent combination. I also love hpw she has the tough girl act but shes really just afraid of being hurt like others.
2) Varric I really loved his character. He wasnt picky and would side with you pretty much whenever. You can also tell he really care about the champion and trusts him/her. He really revere's the champion and backs him/ her up. Lets face it sometimes you need a friend to say I agree in the tough times.
3) Merrill I loved her social awkwardness it made me laugh fairly often lol. I alos love her sens eof duty and caring attitude, She really wants to help her clan and people even if shes going about it the wrong way. Thats one of my favorite things about her. She has a erious flaw but it doesnt take away her willingness to help a care about you.

O n a sidenote I really like Fenris as well his serious/ quite nature. Not to mention hes a awesome warrior and he looks cool, with a good story.
I was really happy Leliana was one of the cameos. She was my absolute favorite in Origins and still probably one my top favs. She played a small part but still it was one of those moments. I really hope she has a bigger part, cause it looks like she will, in the next game.

Apparently neither can the OT lol.

To stay on topic I'll say pending which class Hawke I am

1. Anders
2.  Varric
3.  Merrill

has nothing to do with personality

I have to go with

1. Merrill (I've always been attracted to her type of girl and I have no idea why, just the way it goes I guess)

2. Varric (Dwarves have been my favorite race in any fantasy game and I've always enjoyed Rogue/Archers, mix that in with a little bit of my sense of humor and he is one of the best Bioware characters to me)

3. Sebastian (Seems like an odd choice seeing as most people seem to hate his guts, but he is a very rational character who pretty well evens out his own beliefs with what he knows to be the right thing. He isn't a religious fanatic and is a very human character)

2. Aveline

3.  Tie between Anders and Isabela, though if siblings were allowed, both Carver and Bethany would share the slot.

Isabella: if you look past the surface fluff and give her room to run, she has the most character development of all the companions. She also has the most pleasant speaking voice, imo.

Varric: Perfectly at home in the seediest place in the world, yet somehow transcends it. Repays any loyalty a dozen times over and always has your back, even when you don't know you need looking out for. Has his own "larger-than-life" life, yet still finds time to make everything important to his friends a priority. Also, second favorite speaking voice.

Merrill: She is far and away the most powerful companion when built correctly.

Honorable mention to Aveline for being strong, nonsense female role, while still having a soft side.

Also to Fenris even if he did turnout to be an Edward Cullen clone. It was a cool idea for a character and his voice is nice to listen to for short periods of time.

Dishonorable mention to Anders. He used to be fun, now he's a whinyass, one dimensional prat, which is impressive considering he's actually two people.

1. Anders - He really helps the most on the team. If you are playing as a mage as well, the battles took half the time!
2. Fenris - I love his broody personality too much to not have him, I think the voice acting helps a lot. I also love when he bickers with Anders.
3. Isabela - Because she has some of the best lines in the games, she's a ton of fun.

My favourites are Varric and Aveline. They work very well with my character, who is as level-headed as Aveline, but switches to smartass whenever Varric or Isabela are around. Isabela is good fun, too.

I like Sebastian quite a bit. I can't even say why, maybe because he doesn't really fit in and sometimes it seems everyone in the party is mocking him. My Hawke takes pity on him, while gently pushing him towards rivalry. I always check his reaction on sarcastic and flirty lines and frequently take him along with Isabela, Varric or Anders.

Anders is fun to rival, too. But he can get a bit whiny. "Mages need to be freeeeeeeeee." Sorry dude, no. My sister is about the only apostate I would trust and you are useful, beyond that you mages belong in the Circle.

Fenris makes a nice addition and reinforces my character's reluctance to trust mages. VO is pure gold. He sounds like the German dubbing voice of Clive Owen to me.

Merrill has to be my least favourite, if only because I don't use her. She's so sweet and clueless. It makes sense to have her live in the alienage and pay her a visit now and then.
