I try to swap the party around, depending on the situation like in the Deep Roads had Varric, Anders and sibling (and to hear the different dialoague) but usually:

1) Varric - always comes along as he and Bianca are handy in any fight and his dialogue is funny (which sometimes helps with NPCs), plus if I'm a mage he picks the locks.

2) Isabela - her comments are hilarious.

3) Merril - her adorable naive comments always make me giggle!

Varric, Fenris and Bethany.
Varric always managed to cheer me up. Hawke could really relax around him and his party banter was ridiculously funny. And he's useful to have around.
Fenris - well, at first I was ready to give up on him because he seemed so... ...down but after my mage got to know him better (rivalry makes the heart grow fonder, not absence! ) I warmed up to him and he's been Miss Hawke's main LI since.
Why do we have to exclude siblings? Bethany is my nr3. ..or 2.. or 1.
I wish my sister was like that. She's absolutely adorable. So sweet and innocent it breaks your heart that you can't keep her as a mage.

1. Merrill. Hawke's one indispensable companion, for a few reasons. By the end of the playthrough, she was by far the most powerful character in the party, at one point taking out a pride demon almost by herself. Her various plot threads were awesome, and also d'awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I mean SERIOUSLY. Best companion and my favorite character by far.

2. Fenris. His scythe attack can turn whole rooms of bad guys into beef soup. He filled the warrior slot in my party perfectly, and I also liked him as a character much more than I thought I would. He and my Hawke disagreed about mages, but they were still friends regardless. And him (SPOILERS) siding with pro-mage Hawke over the Templars at the end...pure, understated awesomeness, as was his execution of Hadriana. WAY TO GO MAN! 

3. Sebastian. A very useful archer, and a very interesting character. He reminded me a bit of Alistair in the whole reluctant-prince angle, and also in how he seemed to be the party nice-guy(which is a good thing). He gets Scotsman bonus points too. 

An honorable mention should go to Varric, as I liked him but didn't use him much. I get the feeling I missed out a little, so I'll try to swap him for Sebastian as the archer in the next playthrough.

I tried to swap them all around for banter and things, because (aside from Merrill) I loved all the companions and their interactions, but in terms of combat usefulness:

1. Fenris: He's a freaking BEAST in battle, he was my number one damager.

2. Aveline: She's just brilliant, I had her set as my tank and she'd just hang out and take damage for Hawke or Fenris.

3. Swapped a lot, usually Varric. I found him pretty useless at the beginning but once he got all his archery upgrades he's insanely useful.

I played through as a mage so having Aveline was pretty much a necessity haha.

In terms of favorites personality-wise, Varric, Aveline and Fenris, no contest.

Aveline: Strong, interesting, caring, supportive and lastly she was the most kick ass character short of Merrideth who was bad ass cos she was a boss lol but yea i could relate to aveline the most out of the characters, she and i are very alike, well cept the part where shes a guard captain and im a geeky guy lol

2:Varric, 1: hes a dwarf, 2: hes a story teller, 3: he brings comedey into darker parts of the game, which was cool =)

3: probably Isabela because her dialogue with the other characters was great but her vs Aveline was pure comedey gold lol "shut up ****" but she was my preffered rogue because of certain talents i had specced her for.

though anders was amazing. you can keep fenris girls, ill take anders

Ohh, no big problem there for me. Definitely Varric first and foremost, then Fenris and Aveline.

If an explanation is needed, Varric is just the most charming, sociable and interesting character to have around, and additionally he's the storyteller so it seems natural that he's always part of the group. For some reason, I took a great liking to Aveline, she was just the right amount of sweet mixed in with strong, her awkwardness and shyness in some situations keeping her from being a stereotypical warrior character. Fenris on the other hand is grumpy, brooding and snarly, coupled with the occasional startling joke and a very interesting back-story.

Shortly following these is Isabella, whom I'd have used in my party much, much more often if not for the fact that I just didn't find her very useful in the battles (whine). I thought she was incredibly funny and sexy, great banter with the rest of the party, always with something interesting to say.

Varric, I guess no explanation is needed if you've read this thread.

Fenris, always Fenris. At first, I'll admit, it was purely because I was set on romancing him. But a combination of his hilarious, broody personality and the fact that I built him so he can take down anything, makes him an irreplaceable party member.

Anders, because the way his character played off of Fenris and Varric well, and I needed a mage that could heal my rogue ass.

My main group for most of the game was Aveline, Merrill and Isabela and that was an excellent group. I'll give the other companions a better shot in my next playthrough.

Anders is great too, but my relationship with him is like the one I had with Morrigan: I deeply loathe him as a person, but love him as a character.

^this! It's usually Varric, 2-hander warrior Hawke, Merrill and Isabela work so well together with the different class combos, it's insane. Then I get guilty about not using Aveline, and take her along.

I find this game is hard to do the "max out all companions/ explore their stories" thing, and I ended up focusing on 3. Maybe another playthrough I can do 3 new characters, it would keep it fresh...

Varric -- he was just FUNNY, all the time, and I appreciated the fact that he got along with EVERYONE.

Isabela -- she was also hilarious. And I love how cheeky she was with everyone, she was like an adorable but annoying little sister who teases everyone mercilessly, but you can tell she actually DOES care about them.

Fenris -- he surprised me! I wasn't expecting to like him as much as I do. I like his droll sense of humor, and the way he snarls at everyone. Plus, he's an awesome companion to have around for the fighting -- dude's a beast!

1)Fenris - love him, he's a good warrior
2) Anders - like his argues with Fenris and he heals my team successfully.
3) Isabela/Aveline (prefer Isabela but she's not available all the time)

Merrill, she was cute and so damn powerful. She was always the last one standing in a fight.
Isabela, because she just had awesome lines.
Avaline, for her banter with Isabela.

This was my main party. Really wish I could have had 4 companions, instead of 3.

This was a surprisingly harmonious group. Aveline is a beast of a tank too - bah now I'm thinking I don't want to try sword and boarding myself...thanks thread ;-)

With a Mage Hawke:
Aveline: Human shield
Varric: Range DPS/Lock picker/Source of the lulz
Fenris: Brings the thunder/Eyecandy

Occasionally, Aveline or Fenris get swapped for Anders to be the extra healer, but usually I don't need him unless I know I'm about to deal with a maniac boss.

So I guess I'd place Fenris here. 

Varric - Too much awesome. He's like a big brother to the whole party.

These two characters are the only ones I actually care about. Screw the rest.

I have no real preference. I build the party around what's best for my character. I always carry my love interest to be around permanently though. Always done that, makes the most sense in my head that you'd spend most time with that person around.
