I personally enjoyed the side/secondary/rumor quests.

Even though imho that "real" tactics was thrown out the window. (I just dps everything down now, even bosses)  That the maps/dungeons nearly all literally look the same yada, yada....I really liked the not main quests.  The one that really stumped me the most so far is the "business partner" in Act 1 to pay the guy double once you get back.  See why I enjoy it is because quests like that are VERY personal.  There is no "end of the world" choice or "Heavy burden of the chosen one".  This choice is one you make just to get by.  You do it or don't because "you" want to and not because your companions are putting the "heavy" burden of responsibility on your shoulders.  Thus the choice is even more difficult to make.  Kinda like going to a restaraunt and deciding what you want.  It's not a heavy choice, but it is a choice you would put time into because your not forced to choose a "heroes" or "villain" or "renegade" option.

I liked the rumor aspect. I was surprised the cited rumor source was Varric instead of say, the Hanged Man bartender (though for all intents and purposes, not much of a line to draw). I was disappointed that was taken out in later acts.
