He was my least favorite companion in a group where I liked every other companion... except him. I think I liked Meredith more than Fenris. I'll leave it at that.

Meredith was pretty damn awesome despite her complete and utter craziness.

Fenris was cool... but the only thing that got me was that theme song that played whenever he started talking. It always just made me laugh a little because of how corny it was.

I couldn't stand him. He was a mopey, self-centered, hypocritical jerk and I gave him back to Danarius first chance I could, which felt way better than it probably should have.

I knew I wasn't going to like him the moment I met him, even despite having that sexy Baltheir voice. When he goes off about how horrible his life is without your prompting when you exit that house, it just cemented my realization at his incredible emo woe-is-me negativity. His conversations were overly dramatic as he goes about throwing wine bottles as metaphors for his horrible woe-is-me life.

I can only assume some teenager into Marilyn Manson and black nail polish wrote this character. I can't imagine anyone else finding anything relatable with him. He may not have been the worst character in the game (at least he had personality, despicably angsty though it was), but this thread isn't about who the worst character is. It's simply about hating him. And, I do. :P

To begin with I thought his background was really interesting, and I thought could easily be spun into a good character arc where he slowly comes to the realisation that mages aren't inherently evil...

Then in the fade, the pride demon offers him power to betray you, and he doesn't even hesitate...

What... the.. hell...

Really hoping I get the chance to sell him back into slavery to the magister at some point...

He never moped. He never complained about his problems and kept to himself. Self centered? Just because he didn't care for mages doesn't mean he only thought of himself. He cares about slaves more than himself. And, hypocritical? Fenris is straight and forward.

And most of your party members betray you in the Fade. Not anyone can resist a demon.

Who doesn't betray you in the fade? I had Aveline betray me in the fade and I definitely did not expect that.

I took Fenris, Merrill, and Anders to the fade last time, and only Merrill betrayed me. I've seen Fenris, Aveline and Varric all do it though.

Anders is the only one who absolutely does not betray you regardless of party composition...not that it's exactly to his credit. Justice keeps him on the straight and narrow.

To me it's a toss up between Fenris and Anders. As a damn good pilot once said, "He's not a stabilizing element".

Anders for reasons that should be well known to anyone who finished the game, and Fenris for his blind hatred of anything magical. And because he picks on Merrill, actually both of them do..

yeah, fenris is easily my least favorite companion. he's a whiney brooding emo elf boy who looks a bit silly with the massive twohander and no shoes. i thought not wearing shoes was a dalish thing? why doesnt he have boots on? seriously? IT BUGS ME SO MUCH.

i didn't use him much at all my first playthrough, maybe ill give him a second chance to redeem himself.

Merrill doesn't have boots either. Neither does anyone in the alienage.
The art department decided all elves looked better running around bare-footed. They should fire their art department for that alone. :P And well... re-hire the guy who designed the new elf eyes. Merrill has gorgeous eyes. And Fenris. But I'm biased towards him because of his voice.... So I'll just say Merrill... cause I couldn't stand her pig-headedness towards using blood-magic and still, those gorgeous eyes. <3

Yeah this is a sad statement on the lack of integrity of all the companions in DA2, not a single one that is any way trustworthy. And yes, people _can_ resist demons in the the fade, the whole point of the demon corruption thing is that they can feed off the people that willingly give into them.

But back to my original point, Anders even makes the obversation when Fenris turns on you that it makes him exactly like the mages he hates.

/facepalm

Yes, when after you do his very first questline and he decides to mope and cry to you about how horrible life is WITHOUT your prompting as you leave Denarius' mansion. Oh yea. That Fenris. Always keeping to himself and not complaining. And he spends the entire game reminding you of how horrible life is.

It's crazy how selective memory works for people when they like something. :D There's a Fenris Appreciation thread, I believe. Go squee in glee over there while we hard nosed realists relish in our disparaging comments concerning Kirkwall's second biggest whino (sorry Fenris, I think Anders wins the title for biggest whino). That is what an "I hate Fenris" post is all about. :P

Haha, you know you will NEVER be able to fully contain fangirls with a thread that exceeded 1200 pages :D (myself being one of them :P). And no, I'm not going to defend the guy, since this thread is simply for different opinions.

Just thought I'd point out the obvious :)

Mage Hawke and Fenris had a grudging respect for one another. His friendship path is one of the better companion experiences I had in DA2. I probably wouldn't have even bothered, but he replaced Carver as my 2 handed warrior, and I'm actually glad I took the time to build that relationship. It's like they say, the best friendships are forged on the battlefield. He held a permanent slot on my team.

Fenris is a broken mind incapable of seeing truth or thinking through his own views. He is so thoroughly engrossed in his own emotive grief that he cannot ever see more than one side of an issue.

Were he less of a whiney child, then he could perhaps reason through the situations facing him and come to the realization that magic doesn't kill and enslave people, people do. His inability to get past his own self pity leads him to oppose the freedom of others held against their will.

Beyond these meta-issues of his personality lies the simple fact that it was no he who freed himself, but rather he owes his continuing freedom to Hawke, yet he jumps so quickly to to side against his benefactor.

I hope to discover a way to kill him early in future play-throughs that does not entail remanding him to slavers. I want him dead for who he is, but no one should be a slave.

I think in a future play I shall introduce Fenris to the ultimate irony, falling for a mage. A plot worthy of Tzeench, to be sure.

But keeping it in a playthrough, he knows exactly what it's like to be a slave, and yet he contrives to blame Circle mages who are more or less slaves themselves... Guilt by association here, for his sufferings. Magisters and mages are about as alike as apples and oranges, one would think. Especially since every circle mage has a walking death sentence following them about in a templar. At any rate he was hating on Merrill and Beth, so Hawke hated on him.

He didn't betray me.  I think that depends on who you take with you.

Back on the hate part, I find that whenever people either love or hate a character, with no one really in-between, it's a well-written character.

I despise Fenris with the burning white hot rage of a thousand exploding stars. I will never do a playthrough where I don't betray him to his master or butcher him like a pig in the finale.

He doesn't even belong in Dragon Age. He feels like he's stumbled out of some particularly crappy JRPG. Long, floppy white hair. Ridiculously overcompensating huge (but weightless) anime sword. Constant whining - all emo, all the time. Absolute disregard for any other living being.

And worst of all, the 'phasing lyrium tattoos' thing. There's NOTHING like that in DA otherwise, it comes right out of some stupid manga story and makes him a total Mary Sue.

What I don't get is how he keeps asking me back to his place for wine, when it's clear that I hate his guts from the first moment we met. 'Rivalry', WTF? We're not 'rivals'. I detest you. Learn the difference.

The problem with Fenris' voice is that it just makes me wish he was Balthier and not some whining elf.

Ok, the hair I get but the sword? Really? Aren't the swords the same size regardless of who equips them?
I understand if you dislike his personality, but other than the hair, there really isn't anything that makes him feel very jrpg or manga.

Yeah, because this use of magic and lyrium is completely unthinkable in the fantasy universe that is DA. They should stop introducing new things altogether, don't you think?

I romanced Fenris as a mage, so with some effort he gets over the hatred instilled into him by years of abuse. I'd say that makes him pretty impressive. He even apologizes for some of the things that he says.

I liked it when he threw the bottle against the wall, because there is always this undercurrent of anger in him that he keeps hidden under a facade of calm. In that action you begin to see the struggle that he has with himself. I thought he was a dynamic and interesting character, but thats my opinion.
