I woulnd't go as far and say I hate him. I don't like him and never use him as a companion on any quests apart from his own. Just find his conversations depressing and boring with his constant moaning. Plus in all those years in the Mansion has he never thought of tidying at least 1 room.

I think Isabela said it best when she referred to it as his "magical fisting" ability.

It's not that I hate him, I just despise how stubborn he is on the mage issue combined with him adding what appeared to me as nothing to the actual game, aside from the occasional Mages are all evil" and "I was a slave" remark. Things would have gone down the same whether he existed or not, as opposed to a certain pirate/abomination.

Unlike, Isabella/Anders/Merril whom you can convince via rivalry that being a selfish prat/an abomination/blood mage is bad. Fenris sticks to his hatred of mages (correct me if I'm wrong). That's sort of respect worthy, believing the same thing on Thursday as you did on Tuesday regardless of what happened on Wednesday.

Oh, apparently if you DON'T do his personal quests and DON'T have a complete rivalry/friendship with him, you can get him to somewhat admit that he's slightly wrong. That just didn't cut it for me though.

Yeah, it's not like every single mage in Kirkwall aside from Alain has proven themselves as a blood mage to give him sufficient reason to believe the Circle may be corrupted and needs to be cleansed. And it's not like Orsino only proves him to be right about that by turning himself and the others into monsters.

But... Alain IS a blood mage.  He used it (reluctantly) to release whoever Grace and her merry band of idiots took hostage. The only mages I can think of who don't resort to Blood Magic are Anders, Bethany and (possibly) Mage!Hawke, and Fenris makes it clear in party banter that he thinks Hawke/Bethany are good mages. He's got no love for Anders, but no one can fault him for that.

I hate fenris because he doesn't stand up straight. I mean look at his model, he seems like slouching all the time. Maybe he did lots of heavy work back when he was a slave

I don't hate Fenris.

He was kind of mean to me though, my Hawke being a mage and all. Didn't take him around much because of the moody glares he gave me. He turned out okay in the end  though cause I somehow got his friendship to max.

I don't hate Fenris, though he frustrates me, but only for lack of being able to work with more dialogue.

Seriously, I'm romancing you as a mage. You are really fond of me Fen....did no one think, maybe we should in something stating that the mage romance shows him some magic is good.

Also, why can we never point out that if he was tortured by a man who used swords, he would hate swords?

But, it's wanting to expand on a character that actually makes them interesting. If you have more you want to ask or more you want them to say, it means you were invested.

So, a little frustrated, sometimes want to rap him on the head with my staff, but in a way thats compelling.

@animefan, I think all the romances could have used more dialogue. It was just hard to like or get to know these characters in DA2. In origins you could talk Alistair's head off, he only problem is that you could run out of dialogue. Their solution was to give us less dialogue and put them at certain points in the game. A bad solution as we now had less options when speaking to them. If anything we should have been able to talk their head off with new topics as the years went by and the relationship dynamic change. I hated not being able to talk to Fenris for three years after he dumps me.

Fenris wasn't tortured by swords, but by a mage, in a country filled with corrupt mages. I'm sure if he was tortured by Dalish Elves he would hate them and not mages.

And thats exactly the thing I wish I could bring up with him. I yearned for the chance to explain that to him, and wonder what his reaction could be.

Also, yes, I would to talk to him about the dumping...and why he couldn't interact with me, but Isabela, oh she was fine. But if I flirt with Zev, suddenly its wrong *mutters*

I like how Bioware devs who helped create Fenris hated how he turned out. Especially his hair.

"Giving Fenris more armor and a better haircut (we were to late…god help us, we were too late…)"

"Fenris, Fenris, Fenris….The widowmaker. These barely scratch the surface of how many attempts we made at Fenris. Somehow he was just impossible to capture. He was like a game of musical chairs. His design kept changing until the music stopped and the version we had was the version we had to live with. I still would love to redesign him, but like him or not, Fenris is now Fenris."

I'm a (straight) guy but I personally quite liked Fenris. Very droll fellow, quite amusing.

He annoys me, but handing him over to Danarius is just something I cannot do, just like I could never exile/execute Alistair for Loghain. It just doesn't feel right to betray a companion that has fought by your side for things that have nothing to do with him for 6+ years. He's one of the easiest companions to not have in your party, as you can just tell him to leave or never do his quest in the first act. While his stubborn, mage-hating personality did annoy me at times, he does have reason to be spiteful towards mages. He's never really been proven wrong that not all mages are bad, especially since 99% of mages in Kirkwall are crazy.

I think what bothered me most about him was the somewhat cliche appearence. He kind've reminded me more of a final fantasy character, with the anime-esque white hair, the unique special powers, the broody personality and angsty past, and not to mention he's an elf who wields a big sword most of the time.

And despite all that, I still find him more tolerable than Anders. Anders, now that is a character I hate. And you can never get rid of him, partly because the game won't let you because plot (except at the end) and the fact that he is your healer... so it's hard to lose that at higher difficulties.

There's always the option not to recruit him. And most characters will turn on you if you don't have enough loyalty points and choose against their beliefs, so I don't quite see that as being a valid reason to hate him more than the rest of them.

I quite like Fenris. And I find his view on mages quite understandable considering his background.
In my opinion, Tallis and Merrill are much, much more annoying.

It must be nice to be able to determine what gender those with gender-neutral names and avatars are. Or are you just assuming that all those who are not obviously women must be men?

His personality is too much for me. That being said, he is perfectly justified in being bitter for all the horrible abuses he suffered. I think it's his termperment that can clash with some people.

Bw has written other characters with horrible pasts and those characters didn't come off half so annoying: juhani, jack, Leliana, Isabella etc. etc
