Can anyone give me any advice on how to kill the Arishok?  Been killed by him twice now.  My character is a warrior and all I can think of is to keep taking potions for health and stamina.

A tip would be to either have Anders with you or another mage with the healing ability.

I couldn't beat him 1 on 1 (mainly due to me being a mage), so I had to resort to an all out blood bath, in which it was down to Fenris vs Arishok.

Fenris pwned him

I had to do it 1 on 1, never had the option come up to do otherwise. I did it after the 3rd attempt.

Just fought him 1-1 with a rogue using hit and run tactics. Not fun. Tried on hard. Then Normal. Then caved in and went for Casual, because I actually want to go to bed before, say, Christmas.

What option did you have choose for a full team fight? I might go back and do it again just because of the complete sense of failure I felt at finally beating him.

you have a mage Right?  :D
I did the same, run from him and wait for the charge, after that i froze/hex him and release all the spell that i could, then start running again. ( did that on hard, and the bastard even heal himself 3 times! ).

Was not very heroic.

I don't think a rogue can do it without some severe fortitude bonuses. I'd do fine with the backstab/assassinate combo (doesn't do much damage) but if he ever managed to get 1 hit in, that was it as he'd just walk over and hit me again before I could move.

Dodging the rush was too annoying. he's really fast and the AoE of the rush means that without a sideways evade.

So it came down to an all out brawl. Rogue to assassinate the mages then archers. mages to mob control. Fenris to take the hits.

Does he have a finite number of potions? Every time I get him to below 60% or so, he quaffs a potion that brings him back up to around 90%. I've gotten him to drink twice before I get sloppy and let him get a hit on me.

It's a really stupid fight, because one hit and I'm dead. He always knocks me down, and there's literally no time at all to move out of his next attack. I go for 100% to dead without EVER regaining control of my character.

So, how many potions does he have? If it's unlimited, then I'm going to have to drop the difficulty. But I'm willing to put up with a 20 minute fight if it's actually winnable.

3 I believe, could increase with the difficult, in my fight ( hard ) he heals himself 3 times.

Does your damage increase drastically in this fight or is my game glitched?

Special attacks for me in any other fight do around 1200 but in this fight I'm doing 4-5k on the Arishok. Also, once his health gets down to about 1/8th of the bar it doesn't move at all. I cannot kill him.

Run in circles and hide behind things. Stand by a wall and step out of the way as he rushes so he crashes into the wall, it seems to pause him for a second. It's a hit and run battle. I mean; have you seen the size of that dude? A head to head battle would have you a pile of dust in no time at all :)

I had an archer Rogue, and it took me about 15-20 minutes of hit and run on Normal. I'd use my flask or an incendiary bomb thing to stun him, activate Mark of Death then Assassinate, then Critical Strike (all assassin specialization moves) and lay waste untill he moves, following by getting him to swing (use evade), then use a health/stamina potion as needed (or taking 2 shots at him if not needed), followed by more running. It got to the point where he and I had maybe 1/10 health left, and I had to health potions. I resorted to running/praying. Be careful though, because he will stab his sword through you, hold you up in the air, and take away about half your health if you have low constitution

Playing normal: I used my sword and board warrior (more of a mob controler and damager then a defender honestly) Aveline, Merrill and Varric since I prefer to have one of each class plus another warrior for the extra toughness and mob controlling.

I initially locked down the Arishok with "horror" from Merrill (Arcane spells ROCK!) and then locked down the stairwell using Aveline and Hawke, drawing in foes with Aveline's warshout and then scattering them with Hawke so Merril could cast "chain lightning" for extra damage. Varric was on the other hand mainly used as a sniper against the Qunari mages and partly to draw off flanking enemies from Merrill while Aveline and Hawke chewed through the opposition on the stairs.

Later on when there were only four or so qunari along with the Arishok left (and most importantly, no mages) I concantrated my attacks on the Arishok with Merrill making him vulnerable with the two hexes of the arcane tree, Aveline drawing him in and holding him with her many defensive skills, Hawke doing loads of damage with his "cleave" (vanguard skill) and "assault" (shield skill) along with Varric's crossbow.

Hope that helps. :)

It is cery easy to beat the Arishok as a mage with the right spells.  The Arishok is affected by a Force Mage's gravity slow.  You can cast that on him and then proceed to hammer away at him with other spells from a distance.  When that wears off, use Cone of Ice to freeze him and then run away and hit him again.  Rinse and repeat for about 2 minutes!

The fight was not particularly difficult, simply long and arduous.
Did my first run as DW Rogue, and used 4-5 potions for the Arishok. Simply ran around and when dodged his charge, poked him in the back with Assassinate, Explosive Strike and Backstab (to get behind him again to continue running) with Pin Point Strikes active.

In the future I plan to not duel him simply because, as said, the fight isn't really 'difficult' more than it's annoyingly long. You could technically do it by using a bow even as DW Rogue and just plinking at him at every opportunity with basic shots, and you wouldn't have to use any potions. It'd simply be even longer fight.

That said I'm running now with SnS warrior and I am thinking of giving it a try once I get to that part.

The potion thing has to do with how long you let him sit at the healing % his tactics are designed. If you drop him from 50% to 30% or even 25% fast enough, he will stop drinking. He only drank twice on my nightmare mage run. Once I figured out his heal pattern it was just timing my cooldowns vs his health status. Waited for a rush, and dropped him from 45%ish to 15 in one go of all out DoTs, stun, lock mechanics with the dog and my autoattack to finish up.

I'd obviously got the wrong build on my DW rogue (went for Duelist for general survivability rather than Assassin and all-out damage).

After kicking his butt on Casual (sigh) I reset the difficulty to Hard and went for a team battle. Much more doable. He seemed to have a weakness to Merrill's cold spells ;-)

I've been getting slaughtered by him with my group!
Mage Hawke, force specialisation, but not the full tree yet. Got Anders with me for heals, Merrill for her arcane magicks and Aveline tanking. It seems to be the Serebaas that take us down when the Arishok comes out to play...

I had a dual-wielding Rogue character. i basically waited for him to rush, then went all out, used evade to get the hell out of there.. whenever he had an open spot, i hit him once, got the hell out of there.
Repeat

As a mage i was able to 1 on 1 the arishok with a combination of cooldowns between winters grasp, petrify upgraded, horror upgraded and a few choice spells like crushing prison and the like, so damage over time effects, the hex that makes all hits crit, and the ability to shut him down long enough to get another cooldown up. was pretty easy. that said, if he managed to charge me and catch me, i was dead and buried as he made me his lady of the evening with that big sword.

I tried dueling him on normal with my healer mage... ended in a big stalemate. I couldn't do enough damage with my attacks (and dog's attacks) before he took a potion. On the other hand, my +200 health regen made it impossible for the Arishok to kill me. He would hit me and by the time he hit me again my health would be back to max.
I just decided to reload and take the group fight (saying I won't duel him). Much easier and ''someone else'' was helping.

It seems to be much easier for Mages and Ranged Rogues than for 2-handed Rogues and Warriors to take him down.

This battle actually highlighted for me some of the issues that I originally noted in the Act 1 battle with the dragon when I lost my party. Since there is only a primary attack, you're forced to essentially jab him to death while setting up a big right hand in the form of activated abilities. If there was a secondary attack (crosses, overhands essentially) the flow of combat would be dramatically improved. This creates the ability for single-player combinations which could deal out more damage before you unleash the big guns or provide some of the setup. For melee fighters, a more punishing overhead strike. For rogues a charged arrow or stab, for mages a charged blast. Slower than the primary so it can't just be spammed without you taking some extra hits, but available when desired.

Ideally, the primary attack should have minor ability to stun, secondary attack a moderate impact and activated abilities the greatest chance. This would have provided more enjoyable combat IMO and provided slightly less monotony in this type of 1 on 1 scenario.
