I was pretty friend with Merril, then I decided not to give her the elvish stuff to fix her mirror and right there she got upset and kick me out of the house...

I then go home, she comes knocking and before I realize, Hawke and her are in bed together saying I Luv Us and all.
Finally my character just says I want you to move with me...

Now, how is that possible since when I check her character, she is 100% RIVAL with me....

puzzled...

Just means you've triggered her rival!mance, is all. People don't have to be friends to sleep together(Isabela being an obvious point).
You can have either a friend or rival romance with all LIs.

Rivalry is just as conducive for romance as friendship.

I love how you describe it like it all just happened to you without your consent.

"And then my character married Merrill! What the heck do I do?"

If you deny her the carving tool before locking friend at full then you get the rivalmance. This happened to me my first play of this game. I said "no carving tool for you!" and got a +125 rival message.

Merill's character continuity is completely glitched as well. You can get the custscene of her breaking the mirror or mourning the keeper as early as act 1. It can be difficult to know exactly why things with her go as they do given this pulp fiction twist to her character.
