I guess I need some help with tactics, I've tried every setting I can think of and I can't get the characters to do in combat what I want. I do admit that tactics is a mystery to me, I prefer to direct all the action myself. It seems like it should be simple but nothing I'm doing is even getting close. I admit I'm picky about positioning and most of my problems just involve getting characters to stay put. A hold position command would be really nice.

I'd like for characters to continue to attack an enemy if I've told them to but not use any special abilities unless I select them.
Character shouldn't move unless I've told them to, unless the enemy they're attacking moves (Melee only of course). Telling them to move would include giving them a new position, or telling a melee to attack an enemy.

That's really all I'm after, but anything I do to make the character not constantly run off in a stupid direction seems to stop them from attacking, and constantly telling them to attack the same enemy every turn gets tedious.

I'm not sur ehow you would do exactly what you want but you might want to try : custom tactics with wiped out table, then a behaviour of cautious, default or passive. Not sure which one would work best.
Personnally I'd rather set everyone to aggressive (or ranged for archers and mages), but put them on hold until I've given clear directions, so that they dont charge forward on sight, but then they can attack the next target if the one I ordered to attack dies before I realize.

Currently I have a wiped out tactics table and default behavior set. I tried all the behaviors and that seems to be the best for me, but melee will still take off after things when I'd like them to sit and wait. It seems like I spend half my time clicking on melee and telling them to go back to where I want them.

How do you put them on hold, that may be what I'm missing.

press "H" and it puts your whole party on hold.

The following has been working for me on Nightmare mode, where you have to be extra careful about AoE.

(1) disable all tactics except sustained modes you want to be always active (Summon Mabari Warhound, Lyrium Ghost, Shield Defense, etc.) on "Self -> Any"

(2) change all behaviors to "Passive" except use "Ranged" for Archers. If you use "Ranged" for a mage they will waste fireball spells.

(3) use "Hold" mode

(4) when attacking with your tank, you can also use"select all" (I mapped this to the Enter Key on my number pad) and attack to focus all ranged fire on the same target. Keep attacking with "select all" in order to make your mages use their staves on this target. Archers will continue firing regardless.

(5) you can also use select all to move all ranged party members back away from approaching enemies

(6) every time you swap party members after leveling up, you want to double check the tactics to make sure they are turned off, sometimes they keep getting activated again for some reason.

It's not overly hard to come up with a decent set of Tactics to play on "semi-automatic" with, but don't rely on them too much. Stay on your toes and save the important orders for manual control. Know when to take advantage of "hold position" and that nifty "move to point" order in the radial menu (which I wish the console version of Origins had). Tactics are meant to take some of the load off of the player, not all of it.

If you don't want an action to occur at inopportune times, or if you don't want to waste something, you probably shouldn't assign it to a Tactic.
