Okay, Hawke fled Ferelden because of the blight. And initially, he and his family are so poor that they can't afford the ship ride home even after the blight ended.
But by Act II, Hawke is clearly rich. So, why doesn't he move back to Ferelden? He would probably be more welcome there, since everyone in the Free Marches seem to despise Fereldens.
This is a major plot hole. Why is he motivated to stay in Kirkwall? Sure, you can rationalize that he probably hated Ferelden to begin with and always wanted to leave, but you can also rationalize the fact that Hawke probably missed his home country as well.
Why doesn't Hawke ever move back to Ferelden?

Because his home was destroyed by the blight and he has a new home in Kirkwall and has lots of contacts by Act 2.

Why doesn't the Warden go to Orlais and leave Ferelden to its fate?
Why doesn't Commander Shepard give up?
Because it's not in character. Bioware protagonists are variable, but within a range of options. There are certain parameters that will be followed, and no Hawke would leave Kirkwall at that time.

Lothering had been their home for 10 years which I gather is the most in his/her life and it was rendered inhabitable and the entire nation is ravaged by the blight still. His/Her mother says returning would be very hard considering all that happened there, Leandra gets them the Amell estate back so they have a home, and a nice on at that. Hawke has amassed a nice amount of money, lives as a noble and is known and respected by act 2.
Why would Hawke leave when he/she has the best home and situation in his/hers life?

Because it's Leandra's home? Because Hawke wanted to stay there due to his/her relationships and the life that he/she had built?

Because the Almighty Plot decrees that Hawke must stay put. Thou shalt not disobey the Almighty Plot.

Limitations of the video game format. For something more freeform, try playing the Dragon Age tabletop RPG.

Because Hawkes to lazy he/she would much rather kill a high dragon

Indeed.
Although my Hawke would have gladly left Kirkwall and all the insane mages to its own devices a LONG time before the end.

I seem to recall my Hawke answering this very question. Nothing to go back to and they already started a new life in a new home.

Because at least in year 7 or 8 he not only has a mansion, but belongs to the upper class of Kirkwall.

he's got a mansion and has made alot of friends there and settled.
his mother is there. all his friends are there. why would he move after he worked so hard to work for his place in high town?
