Is it a good idea to make Leliana dual-wield?

Hey everybody!

Some questions: I'd like to give Leliana dual wield talents but I am not sure if this is a good idea:

1. Do I meet a dual wielding rogue any time soon? I just reached Redcliffe after having my first dr**m about the a****emon, so I'm still very early in the game.

2. Does it make sense to give a player more than one weapon style focus? In NWN it wasn't a good idea not to focus on one "career". It was best to focus on archery, dual wield or two-handed combat. How would you say does this compare to DA:O?

3. From my first impressions, archery looks rather "underpowered", as it was in NWN. Would you say this is true?

thanks in advance!

I never make Leliana dual wield. I usually go with 2 meleers, having 3 just means they get in each other's way.

Plus Arrow of Slaying is a Great great great ability

I like having her as my archer.

Shale and myself get the job done, with Morrigan healing and blasting away :)

Yea remove any kind of melee weapons off of her as in my 2 game completions she absolutely sucked in Melee combat. Just equip her with the best Bow, any kind of arrows, let her use her Bard songs and be your primary Ranger. She excels at it, so use her for what she is good at. Unless someone else has been able to turn her into a super Rogue/Assassin, then by all means have fun, but Bow and her songs are what enables you to survive and win in my opinion.

I balanced her for both, got her up to Two Weapon Mastery so she switches back and forth. I only did this because I did not pickup Xevran (a DW rogue you should be meeting soon).

In general though, you get few talents in the grand scheme of things so it pays to specialize.

i make her a ranger and use her as my trap disarming/lock picker. really master ranger ups her mediocre dps quite a bit. even just regular ranger using the wolf gives you a pet hat hits for mid/low 20s.

I have her as a duel wielder. I rarely use her archer skill as frankly, with two good weapons and duelist spec she is a shredding machine.

My first playthrough, I was finding a lack of useful ranged weapons early on so I gave her some dual weild skills and stuck her with daggers. She tore everything up and was often the last one standing and got to do the dragon rodeo with "mommy". I found Z later and realized I should have kept her ranged, but had spent too many points to back out now. She got to stay in my party pretty much the entire game. This time I'm gonna take away her melee weapons once I get her a decent bow so she sticks to ranged and make her an archer and see how that goes.

She serves primarily as an archer in my first party, but I also gave her some of the passive Dual-Wield talents as she often becomes the last line of defense for Wynne when the fighting gets chaotic, and I find she gets forced into melee freqently during fights in confined areas.

Thank you so much for all those useful answers fellows! Feels just like the old forums that way. So I'll keep her ranged and wait for that Zevran dude to show up.

See you!

Leliana is dual-wielding for me. I've got three front-line melee fighters, I stormed through Warden's Keep with ease.

I use her as an archer, currently at level 11. It seems to be a bit of a "late bloomer" thing especially if you prioritize lockpicking as I do, but I do find her ranged damage to be helpful in my group setup. Rogues seem to have too many talents to pick from already without switching combat style so I don't think I'd do it, but it obviously works for some.

I thought about it...then I realized how much damage arrow of slaying can do..and forgot about it.

I was wondering the same thing. I did the auto level thing and when I picked her up at Level 25 she was mostly already trained in Archery. I was wondering if her level when meeting her is based off your PC Characters Level. If so maybe you could choose what she is trained in if you dont level up your PC when you can. I am not sure if this is possible though. You might be to under powered to complete the beginnning stages if you dont level when you can. Thoughts

Since I myself play a warrior-archer, I let Leliana focus on dual weapons with archery as a backup. It works out really well especially if you build a high rapport with her. Her cunning score will skyrocket and she'll do MAJOR damage if you give her the lethality talent.

Also, there is an absolutely KILLER dagger for sale in Orazamar. I think you guys know what I am talking about it.

Eh I just use Leli for her stun song. She's gotta be close in to pull that off.

She gets the best bow in game.

That was a strong enough incentive for me to keep her as an bard/archer. I did give her Duelist too, surprisingly it mixes well.

Yup her bow from her quest is great. ( i think it has rapid shot built in so you dont need to have the sustained skill on)

I use her as ranged, got stealth and lockpicking up first tho which i will probably change next go. While she wont outDPS a dual wield rogue, shes always alot safer at ranged and has utilities like crit shot skill for 1 shotting frozen/petrified mobs, Arrow of slaying for 1 shotting mobs, sustained debuff shots if on, mass aoe stun arrow.

All in all very useful as archer and her bard skills are ok too. A single target paralyze being the best (2nd talent). Her 2nd spec i usually pick Dualist just for the stats.

You could choose ranger but to have a pet up is a sustained ability which costs alot and the stamina is IMO more useful on other abilities.

Sure.

I chose a warrior obviously.

-Focused ability points on Dexterity.  Every level up I would put 2 points into dex, and 1 into strength.  Sometimes in the early going I put all 3 into dex.  As I got higher level I would drop a few points into willpower & constitution.  Once dexterity got above 36, I started putting more points on strength.

-Max out the Archer tree as a first priority.  Arrow of Slaying is frighteningly effective.

-When archery tree is done, do the row of the warrior tree that ends with "Death Blow".

-After that, it is your choice.  However, since you are going to have a high Dex for the archery focus, it is natural to stat focusing on Dual Weapons after that.  I was able to fill out the top two rows of the dual weapons brach by game's end.

-For my specilizations I chose Templar and Champion.  I didn't take any of the templar abilities, however.   I did max out Champion though.  WarCry & Rage are quite useful.

-I wore light armor only.  This kept my stamina costs down so I could use abilities more effectively.  Plus, your dex will be so high that your defense score will help you avoid blows in the first place.

-Obviously use the Longbow.  It works best with the high strength/dex combo.

I ended up with a pretty versatile character that could provide high damage archery support, but also get in with the melee when necessary.  My other party members were Wynne/Morrigan, Allistair, and Leliana.  Leliana helped on the range stuff at first, but eventually I made her focus on dual wield/melee.  So Allistiar and her would wade in and fight while I did the early damage with Arrow of Slaying/Critical shot.  Then I would join the melee if necessary.

Archery is way underpowered and she's useless as an archer. I level her up manually, choose her skills for her and have her on duel wield with nicely laid out custom tactics and she kicks ass. It really depends on what specs you give her and that you manually set her tactics, including what songs she sings at what times. She can actually be very very effective as a dual-wielding rogue.

I think the archery feats are fine as they are. What they needed to do to make archery more powerful is:

1. Offer greater quantities of elemental arrows at shops and REDUCE their costs.
2. Allow you to poison arrows just as you would melee weapons.

Those 2 things alone would make archery a more powerful build. But as it is now, you can STILL do pretty good with Arrow of Slaying, Critical Shot, and Scattershot.

i use her for dual wield and switch to arrows, along with alistar, for mobs with aoe effects.......

she has damage rating of 25 in each hand.......

i took down high dragon, all revenants and gax like that.. although positioning gax so aoe didnt hit rest of party was hard........
