This may have been discussed already, but I can't find the search button.

Mage Hawke is an apostate and Origins makes it pretty clear that Templars hunt and kill apostates who are not within the circle.  Those in the circle are brought back or made tranquil. There are exceptions; the Warden being a mage can run around freely because s/he is the Warden.

Now, if BW retconned the relationship between mage and templar being much more lax in Kirkwall, I would reluctantly forgive that.  Unfortunately that is not the case.  In fact the whole point of the game is that the relationship between mages and  Templars is strained nearly to a breaking point.  The Knight Commander is much stricter than any Fereldon Templar would hope to be and Cullen, well we know his stance on mages.  "We can't treat them like regular people" or something like that.  Enter Mage Hawke who runs around Kirkwall casting spells w/ his or her big "I am a Mage" stave and no one seems to notice. Ser Wesley notices that Bethany is a mage.  Does he notice that Hawke is a mage?  To be honest, I don't know.  It's not very clear, but he is blighted and not feeling well, so maybe he had an off day.

Later in the game, Mage Hawke saves Cullen from a possessed templar and Cullen kindly thanks mage Hawke and leaves.  Perhaps there was a lot going on and Cullen just didn't notice all those fireballs and other spells flying here and there.  Mage Hawke proceeds to caste spells all over the place, in front of Templars, inside the Chantry.  Fenrris notices that Hawke is a mage, very much so and he's not happy about it.  Sebastiaon, however, a Chantry boy through and through does not.  Finally, enter Knight Commander Meridith.  Batsh*t nuts as can be, but she knows that Hawke is an apostate mage and even threatens to lock him/her up if Hawke doesn't do something for her.  Maybe she's really nuts because of all her incompetent Templars?  I don't know.

I realize that sometimes immersion needs to be bent for game mechanics.  The PC can’t jump off a cliff in any BW game unless it’s scripted and companions don’t feel the effects of a fireball cast in their face, except on higher difficulties. DA2 doesn’t bend immersion; it breaks it in half, crumbles it into a fine powder, and then flushes it down the toilet.

I understand that Hawke only has so many lines and nearly all lines are the same for each class, but Mage Hawke’s plot line is just retarded.  There’s really no other word for it.  It’s as if the story was written for Warrior Hawke and someone finally realized, “Oh sh*t, Hawke can be a mage too.  We forgot”  and so they shoehorned Mage Hawke into the story.

All that said, I actually like the story and the idea behind it, but the execution was just pitiful.

As a mage I always found myself curious as to why I could run around and cast spells in daylight and not have to worry about Meredith coming down.

I'm not 100% sure but I do remember Meredith saying something like she let Hawke lie low because he wasn't a threat (lol?) but she probably kept pretty close tabs on him.

After Hawke becomes Champion she says that she lets him/her run around because s/he is protecting the city.  Mage Hawke is Batman.  I actually went out alone at night in Lowtown to clean up the streets a couple of times. ;)

That would be pretty fun to lead a sort of double life if you play a mage hawke. During the day you are just a normal guy trying to make it in the city, but by night you are Hawkeman, super apostate mage of street justice.

At least for Act 1 they should have had some sort of confrontation with the templars if you are a mage, and they could just make it so that by some circumstances the templars don't arrest you since you either saved their life or did a favor, or appealed to a sympathetic templar such as Thrask.

By act 2 you could use your newfound standing to bribe templars or have the viscount step in on your behalf since you start working for him.

Then in act 3 you are the champion and can get away with probably anything.

I haven't play as a mage yet but I've wonder about that. I mean, I was surprised that in the beginning Bethany could run around with me in the Gallows and she'd be just fine. Really? two apostates running around in front of templars and no problems? well Anders I can understand (and no one, NOT ONE PERSON, addressed him as a warden. and on top of that, when we saw the wardens in lowtown, they didn't recognize him either. now i'm sure it's because he's new...but they got to have some way to recognize either other and send words out that there are new recruits, right?) but Bethany? I dont get this at all...
