That scene was dumb, the dudes mother just died, and you barely get any response out of him. In fact, what the hell?

Okay, picture this, I had a playthrough where, his bro died, his sis died, and then due to my lame investigation skills, his MOM dies.

Not just dies, but was butchered, mutilated, kept alive by blood magic. AAAAND, my character is a warrior.

From then on, you barely get a kick. When his mom died, you didnt get much reaction besides "*sad face* I failed you."

First of all, in my opinion, the most proper response should have been one of shock. He is a warrior, his bad ass adrenaline should be feeding into dark emotion at that point. Even if he is the cool headed character.

Secondly, I dont think he should have had the chance to speak with her dying talking head. She should have just been lifeless, there shouldnt have been a lingering energy spirit crap left. Now the character doesnt even get a chance to say goodbye, further fueling his rage.

no, im not trying to make a dark story moment darker, I'm trying to make sure that if you do something dark you do it correctly, not make it a passing moment thats nothing but a footnote in the game's story.

His mother was just nothing then? Thats pretty much a character psychological defining moment. In fact, after that happened, and varric or someone cracks a joke soon after, you should see hawke punch him in the face. Hawke should be more angry and jaded as a character after that.

Nevermind, these are my thoughts which have already been expressed by others in how handling the death of characters in this game was a joke.

Anyone remember this classic moment in DAO?

"NOT MY BAAABBBYYYYYYYY!Y!Y!!!!!!!!"

Seriously, I believed her in DAO...

Aye that moment could have been better done, it was done as it is done however. It'll probably be modded the hell out of at some point though.

It does depend on your choices though. I rarely ever ventured down to the bottom of the wheel but here I did alot and then I chose the top of the wheel in the conversation with my mother - cue rage at the blood mage and despair at my dying mother.

A lot of people handle grief differently.

Some fall apart, others bottle it up, and others just change

Hes "your" character though, shouldn't he be an extension of yourself? Shouldn't he be capable of expressing the grief you desire him to express? Oh.. oh.. wait. RPG-Lite.

But you didn't get to decide how Hawke handles it.

Bah, who cares how my Hawke reacted. I was the one crying into my keyboard. Don't look at me like that; I'm very close to my own mother and quite liked Leandra.

yea I've played this game twice now and cried both times. Doesn't help they used Mama Cousland's voice actress.
Damn Bioware for giving me emotional moments in the game.
My mage didn't have rage adrenaline going, she just felt drained emotionally (like I was) All that was running through my head was, "I stopped him Mom, don't go...I can fix this..."
There are some places even a spirit healer shouldn't go and that was one of them.

I found it to be a very powerful quest. Video games are limiting - you want to really roleplay, get some friends, a table, and some tabletop RPGs. Then you can show every nuance of how your Hawke would really act.

Considering you can choose to have Hawke lash out at everyone around him after she dies. I think that makes it even more powerful.

It really depends on his personality. I kind of want to go throug a playthrough where he's a good person holier than thou guy, then his sister or bother dies, he goes snarky, then finalyl ending on downright angry after his mother dies. Just to see what happens.

It's not really "holier than thou" - reddragon. It's very passive and compassionate and calm. I haven't seen him really preech once with either the "Halo and Wings" or the "Olive Branch".

My character was just "sad" when this happened. He was more concerned with being there for his mother than he was ranting like a mad baby with a stinky diaper.

I personally thought the voice acting was very monotonic, considering what just happened to his mother...I mean, really. This was like some weird **** out of Silence of the Lambs lol, and Hawke was like ......"oh....well....this is not good, I may miss my train now"

This, yes, it was just a moment of loss.  Beyond that my Hawke wasn't thinking.  The killer was gone but Mom was dying.  At least you freed her from being his prisoner since he would have kept her 'alive' in that awful state.  And at least she retained her mind and didn't go all brain eating zombie on the PC, forcing you to kill her as well. She gets to tell you she loves you and you get to say goodbye.
I also like how you get a visit from your love interest (For my first playthrough it was Aveline since I had no romance active) following the death.  I like the reactive scenes in it (reminiscing about Aveline's dad and toasting parents with a bottle) where the death was handled in a realistic and touching fashion.  Unlike the non reaction death is given in DAO.
That truly would have driven my poor Hawke off the deep end.

I also imagined that my Hawke felt crushed by his failure. I chose all the "I failed you." options - felt appropriate since -

1) I told her to start dating when she had asked. I told her: "All I want is for you to be happy."

2) I killed the wrong guy in an attempt to capture the "Kirkwall Killer".
