Hey all,
Wanted to start off by saying I love DA:O and have been addicted since release. That's what makes this worse...
I've run into a big problem. I have had two off/on crash "areas". I tend to CTD when loading a "city map" (from inside denerim or the deep roads) about 1/3 of the time. That one is no big-gives me a good reason to get out of my chair when it happens.
The bigger one is random crashes in the beginning/middle of a battle sequence (never near the end). This has been a problem to the point where I cant finish a specific encounter atm, because it constantly crashes. I am stuck in the deep roads @ Oath (not Oath, but something "O***") Thaig in a fight with dwarf spirits and a stone golem or spiders by Ruck. I always crash here.
Has anyone had a similar problem with crashes or may know of a solution?
I am currently using Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT and have already tried upgrading and downgrading drivers, but to no avail. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading!

I found that particular section of the game even more prone to crashes then elsewhere (Generally i have to restart the game every 30 minutes average anyhow, but there its down to once every 10 minutes).
One of the things i noticed is that these crashes tend to occur when movement reduction / snare spells are used. Personally i crash around 50% of the time when using blizzard or winter's graps, but strangely cone of cold functions normally. Perhaps evading these two spells as well could help you as well?
Other then that i can offer little assistance, other then saying you should often quicksave, or perhaps try some other tactics. For example having a mage nuke the area prior to the fight or making sure an earthquake is present could work at times. Hence, it might just be a coincidence but at times using a different tactic prevents crashes for me.
Having said that... Bioware, did you really play test the game and not notice the amount of crashes? A tad more quality control and a few more code testers might have been so much better... O well.

Thanks Excirial, I will try that out. I do have sleep and crushing prison as priority tactics on my mage... I will turn them off and see if that makes changes. Appreciate the input!

Update...
I managed to finish off the dwarf spirits and stone golems in the area, but the multi-spider fight @ ruck is still crashing.

Another "Fix" that works every now and then is lowering your graphical settings. I just figured that i could pass a crash prone bossfight when i lowered my graphical settings to 1280x1024 from my usual 1680X1050.
Somehow i expect a memory leak that has a higher chance to occur when more memory is used, especially since restarting the game or rebooting every now and then fixes most issues for me.

This might help, I'm about to try it myself.

Thanks for the help guys, but nothing is working. This really sucks, I am trapped in the Deep Roads due to battles constantly causing the game to crash. I get an occasional opening where I can complete a pull and save the game-but the luck wears thin quickly.
Does anyone else have some input regarding constant crashing from starting battles? This is the ONLY place that the game crashes, at the beginning of fights *(and it has only been consistently happening in deep trenches/orthan thaig). I have tried everything to fix this and its getting frustrating.
Anymore help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Update
Since the problem is VERY bad in the deep roads zones, I have decided to make another character in the meantime-only to discover that it is a problem everywhere, just not a guaranteed occurrence outside the deep roads (uncommon/rare battle crashing in my new game).
Still looking for some more input if anyone has any. Thank you.

I found a suggestion in another thread which solved the entire crashing issue for me completely - i have been without crashes for the last 4 hours and at the same time my blizzard / winter's grasp spells work perfectly now.
Apparently the issue lies within the PhysX physics engine that is part of the Nvidea GPU; I think its a buggy implementation within the game - either way, completely disabling it was the solution for me. To do this open the configuration screen => extra options => NVIDIA PhysX. Then select "Disabled" at the "PhysX GPU accelation is..." option and save.
Im not certain that it will work for you, but it certainly worked wonders for me - Seeing we have a similar GPU (9800 GT for you, 8800 GTX for me) it may actually be the same issue. Good luck with it!
