I just finished killing that giant beast for Merril's companion quest and I went back to the keeper to recieve the tool. I cannot stand Merril as a character so i'm trying to max out her rival status by being mean to her. This is my first play through though and I want to see as many quests as I can. If I don't give her the tool, do I miss out on a quest later or do i get a quest either way? I would prefer if you didn't spoil it too much, but if it's necessary feel free to do so.

I played it through and denied her the tool and got 15 rivalry points. I just want to know if i miss out on a quest because of that.

Just consulted the strategy guide, to get her main Act 3 quest you need to complete, "On the Loose," and "A Talking To." So I believe you can keep the tool from her and still get the quest.
