When I first started playing I quickly became disappointed in the game. It came across as unfocused and incoherent and I felt I was just running around from place to place doing an endless line of quests without any real purpose. Also my companions seemed void and without personality. Don't get me wrong, the game was still quite fun to play I had just expected something different/more from a Bioware game.
Then I hit Act 2 and my disappointment soon turned to awe and delight as the many pieces of the puzzle that makes up this masterpiece began falling into place and my companions sprang into life through their individual quests and the random dialog they had with each other during our travels.
Story wise this game has everything you'd expect from a Bioware game and more and during my play through I experienced all the emotional responses in myself that I've come to expect when playing a Bioware game.
Also I loved the ending, it was unfulfilling and dark and the feeling it left me with reminded me of the first time I had watched Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back.
As far as the combat goes I must confess I don't really care either way. In my view the combat in Bioware games (With the exception of ME 2) has never really been that good compared to other RPG's. I play Bioware games for the narrative and always have and when it comes to that Bioware is unsurpassed imo.
I've played Bioware games since Baldur's Gate and in my opinion (and I know from reading the forums that stating this is not going to be popular) Dragon Age 2 is the best Bioware game ever made!

As an overall game, I like ME2 and DAO better, but I'll agree that the story is well done in this one.

Combat waves and the resulting impossibility of proper rpg encounter planning still annoyed me, though. Origins still wins both on rpg mechanics and a story that works from the first act.

haha good point. i felt exactly the same way. DA2 was a better empire strikes back than ME2 ever managed to be.Svig wrote...

Y'know, that's a good point. ME2 rally just felt like a "Dirty Dozen" in SPACE with awesome characters, and I loved every second of that. But the ESB--DA2 comparison is good. Fun fact, ESB was critically panned when it came out, only later was it remembered as the best one.

But I extremely enjoy the combat (far more than in DA:O) and I like most of the characters and I also think the story is better than in DA:O, because it's not the typical "You-have-to-defeat-great-evil" theme and you have to make really hard choices in the end.

I'm going to guess that the expansion pack (you know it'll come) will finish off the story since DA2 does end on a cliffhanger.

Nah, I think an expansion pack/DLCs may touch on it but the majority of the loose ends etc will be tied up in the third game.

Perhaps but I would think that a 3rd DA2 game would be about a new character and not about Hawke. But I could be wrong.

I'm not even all that interested what happens next.
Mainly cus I didn't get to make any real choices that mattered in DA2.
All decisions that there really were happened in side quests which is sad.
2 choices, Mage or Templar and no middle ground or anything.
At least in DA:O there were many choices in main quest line. Bhelen or Harrowmont, Werewolves or Dalish, Templars or the circle, Alistair or Princess or marriage between them or rise to throne yourself as noble. You get to choose wether to kill the backstabbing scumbag or not.

But i must admit, i loved the ending. The Question that is asked is seriously hard to answer, not only just answer, but answer that question on the spot given the circumstances! I also liked the dark ending, i love stories with dark endings leading into the unknown !
Overall i see now where the story was leading, yeah characters may have been done better, but its gonna be leading to a massive war
