So I see some great items for 100+, but I have never gotten to 100 let alone more....

So what strategy/glitch/mining operation do you use to get a decent amout of gold?  Mind, I have found some really sweet items and I don't NEED any from the shops but it would be nice to be able to buy some of the really uber gear for sale, instead of only being able to drool over it.

You really haven't ever gotten over 100 gold? On my rogue, at least, I've been over twice... my Mage so far, once... I am however using items that either have me gain more gold or drop better equipment, and this sells for more amounts or translates to some temporary upgrades for my troops (thus I sell their old equipment).

Although, on my rogue I was greedy and always demanded a reward from everywhere, my Mage is being more kindly, and receiving less EXP and Gold for the whole thing, actually! I just find that if I ever find an item I really want, I make it a point to purchase absolutely nothing and save up everything for it.

It usually doesn't hinder me too much as items found/obtained during quests can usually work as at least temporary upgrades, and health/stamina/lyrium is pointless to buy as whenever you drop below a certain threshold the game responds with a few dropping in the next few kills.

Eventually, I'll find I have enough for whatever item I was saving up for. Some items aren't worth it, as next act you'll just receive something better. One of my favorite items (I've said this in other threads repeatedly) is the Ring of No Wishes, giving immunity to crits and stuns, makes any normal fragile character a semi-DPStank, and if placed on a tank, it makes any tank near unkillable.

P.S. My Mage is currently about to end Act 1, she had earned about 50 gold once, spent it, earned around 33 gold, and is now obtaining that loan from a certain individual for another (possibly) free 50 gold. Already means I'm up to about 133 gold! (Of course, I've spent some, but that's my current total.)

I believe there's a finite amount of gold in the game since there's a finite amount of fights in the game. As such, being as frugal as you can til the end of the game certainly will pay off. However, I've only probably accumulated maybe 200g worth of good throughout my entire game (I'm about halfway through Act 3 currently) and I've extorted coin from every conversation option I could. This all leads me to believe that either I too am missing some legitimate gold trick or those 100g luxury items are just that.

If that is the case, I'm much more content with a handful of 25g items for my entire party than a single item.

For one, I think you can benefit from using Dougal's 50gp to invest in the expedition and then double cross him after the Deep Roads.

I just started the deep roads, so I'm not sure exactly how it will play out, but I didn't give a penny to Varric's brother because Dougal paid for me.

I think you only get contacted by Dougal after you complete most of the other quests before the Deep Roads. You might also need to spend your gold to get it below 50gp - not sure about this last part.

You can get over 100g in Act 1 alone. I think about 110g is the most I got in Act 1. I finished my playthrough wearing two 100g rings. And I bought numerous tomes for about 25g each, I think about 3-4 tomes. So there is definitely lots of gold to be found and earned. Open every single chest and search every pile of bones. Do every fedex quest, most of the fedex quests give 50silver in act1 and 1gold in act2.

Ah yes, this is what I was referring to, Dougal. I had to complete every single quest except for the 50g in Act 1 before I received his letter at home. Once received, say hello to a possibly free 50g.

Did you use runes of fortune or any items that increase loot drops?

I was over 100g before the Deep Roads without taking money from Dougal, I just did every side quest in Act 1, and I even found out I had missed out on about 5g in the beginning when you are trying to get in the city.

I'm pretty sure Dougal is there in case you cannot front the 50g yourself.  He shows up when all the quests in Act 1 are completed.

Similarly, I just believe the scene with Bodhan at the beginning of Act 2 just won't happen.  I assume you never actually get the 50g and the 100g you owe him just comes out of the magical fortune you make whilst in the Deep Roads.

I would like to know whether or not there is actually an option to double cross him though.

No, that's what I'm saying, possibly free 50g. Trying not to spoil much but.. yes, you can betray him. He comes to collect, you say no, possibly free 50g! :)

I got the message from Dougal after completing most of the Act 1 quests, but I had still not completed The First Sacrifice, or encountered Isabela.

(I found out later Isabela only speaks with you after you complete The First Sacrifice.)

if you do everything in act 1, youll have over 100 gold.

however i dont believe you can get say 250 gold plus, meaning you need to decide on what you need.

for example, my mage main had the choice of a weapon or a robe and ring. i went with the weapon and ring.

Dougal method is just for skipping content tbh, at the end of act 1 you receive your 50g back, if you choose dougal's method you don't get the 50g back.

It's kind of free 50g.  It's more of an option not having to spend a lot of money in order to do a quest in the main storyline sense it can't be avoided.

You never actually get the gold and it's never taken out afterwards.  It just states that you paid him after the expedition.  He comes back to try and get more money from you on top of the 100g he already got.

Ah, is that how it works? I was reading another thread were they were saying it was a free 50 gold because you never had to pay him back. I suppose I misunderstood their meaning. I'll find out, either way, as I'm almost done with Deep Roads on my second character, after accepting the gold from him. Thanks though.

Yea, I won't spoil too much but it is explained in the cutscenes and video a couple times.

Its spoiler section so you can spoil it for him, dougal is just a way of skipping to the next act if you don't have the gold or just want to do it earlier than expected. You gain 0g benefit from doing this, if you do it the regular way you're paid back the 50g you invested. Its just a way to continue the storyline if you run out of cash, which can easily happen with the pricey merchandise.

Not taking Dougal's offer was a huge mistake. I ran myself ragged trying to raise the money to buy a spell tome that I only noticed AFTER buying a bunch of other stuff, including stuff from the Black Emporium (which would always be there in every act). Needless to say, there wasn't any more money to be found, and I didn't take the offer because I didn't realize how the Deep Roads mission would go... hmph... no free spell for me!

Aside from that, I didn't have a big problem with money. As people have said, just focus on buying only the items you really need and equip fortune runes and similar accessories. Also, try not to waste potions, and let allies fall in combat if you have to... using potions is a huge waste of money if you can win the fight any other way.

SPOILER

This is the Spoiler section, right?  I'm going to spoil something so don't read this if you don't want to hear it!!!
Oh, and by the end, I had over 100k gold... but be warned!  Once the game is over and you return to the mansion, everything in your storage chest will be GONE.

END SPOILER

Where is Dougal? I finished every quest except Deep Roads and about to pay Varrics bro the 50g to for Deep Roads. I didn't think it was avoidable.

Maybe you have to spend some gold to get below 50gp in order for Dougal to contact you.
