I understand that all romances in DA2 was developed to cater for sexual minorities and so on. I think I had a right to know these "improvements" before purchasing the game. Why the game developers didn't say the whole truth about Hawke companions before preordering DA2? In my opinion, it would have been respectable from Bioware to tell the truth in advance, because many people preordered this game. Unfortunately, I was among them. But I really didn't want to pay money for gay and lesbian content. If the game was designed for those who like such things, well, I have nothing against, let these people pleased. However, I don't have to pay money for what is totally unacceptable to me.

*Sigh*

Same gender romances were on the first game. It’s logical to
assume that they would be in the second. Plus there were interviews and dev
comments confirming same gender romances before release. The information was
out there, it’s not Bioware’s job to stamp a big WARNING: CONTAINS GAY STUFF on
their game.  If the fear of THE GHEH
renders you incapable of playing games, it’s your responsibility to do the
research.

Not that any of that probably matters to you anyway. :wizard:

Knight of Flowers, I'm a big fan for DAO game. The fact that there were two options for gays and lesbians romances, doesn't bother me, because I knew who was who in this game. Alistair was romance object for my female Warden, because he was clearly hetero man and Zevran, who made no secret that he are gay, was good friend to me. In the DAO all the actors were individuals, rather than the whims of someone else's puppet. In the DA2 they made some sort of mix-up with the companions sexual orientation. Anders, Fenris and Merrill...It seems even they themselves don't know their true sexual orientation.
Plus, I was interested in what the developers say about the upcoming game, but haven't read anywhere that they want to do this "all is bi" thing with all romances in DA2. Although I didn't have time to sit all the time in forums and read posts and chat about the game. However, this unpleasant experience with following game is a good lesson for me never to do so hasty purchases. (I have in mind the preordering).

MaRKyzas21, companion sexuality changes depending on Hawke's sexuality. If you are female, then neither Fenris nor Anders will ever give a sign that they are anything but heterosexual, (well, unless you're bugged by Anders caring a lot for his friend, Karl) nor will Merrill hit on you unless you purposefully seek her out.

I really don't get this 'companions are bi' thing. They aren't. They are coded to be attracted to Hawke if Hawke flirts with them.

Err, well, aside from Isabela. But that's just her character, same as DA:O.

Bioware has the attitude "the romances are entirely optional, if you don't like them, don't do them" attitude, which I tink is great. You don't want a gay romance? Then don't. As Shazzie said, they're Hawkesexual, or at least that's how it appears. Bioware has no obligation to announce which characters will be romancable by a same-sex Hawke.

Amazing. You think Zevran's gay...he's not. You think bisexual people can't be real people...they are.

All the bisexual-hate I've read around here during this winter has drawn me to one conclusion. The destruction of precious, precious gender-roles is a "violation" that people can't handle. No lines left! No demarcation that separates little "gayness" from straight culture even while someone pretends to be respectful to queer people at the same time. Nothing left that will keep at bay those who ask for too much, hmm?

Everytime someone wishes there were limitations on how queerness can be depicted, it's a homophobic person who gives straight people a bad name.

Never fails. People whine that bisexual LIs pander too much for a minority as it diminishes straightness. Well, that it does since American culture reveres heterosexuality more than what it needs to feel good about itself. In DA2 asinine limitations like that were undermined to a degree that BioWare hadn't attempted before. It's progress in a way that matters more to queer folks than it does to somebody who "doesn't agree with the lifestyle" as if that overprivileged "all about me" attitude should matter.

I suggest you try Sebastian. I read somewhere he'll respond only to str8 advances. BioWare was still thinking of you!

This thread is pretty, and witty.

Also, Anders isn't exactly bi. His sexuality changes to suite the player's gender.

Exactly! It's just the point. Anders isn't bi, cause you can only choose one gender to Hawke, obviously.

And... I loved play a gay romance between them. Tks BW! I suggest a gay romance between Alistair (but a better graphic Alistair, like DAO's Alistair!)

In DAO the sex scene shows nudity (any; a little) cause was a male and female characters. When we'll see more then gay kiss? I can't wait! ;-)

Huh, I didn't even know I was gay until you just told me... I personally could have sworn that Merrill and Isabela were both girls, but I was obviously tricked!

You want to get rid of optional content that you may never see in your game at all at the expense of us people who DO want said content? Yeah, not going to happen.

I'm a straight woman, and I love the way they presented sexuality in general in this game. I love being able to define my characters' respective sexualities and stick with it but still have a choice of LIs. That I can play a lesbian or a gay male or a bisexual helps me keep the Hawkes I make distinct in my mind. It livens things up to think from a new perspective like that.

I do wonder how I'll feel if I do an excessively flirtatious playthrough (a Hawke who flirts with literally everyone.) But overall, I'm quite pleased with this aspect of the game.

You can also avoid 'teh gay' in DA2 by not pursuing a gay romance.

THERE, problem solved. :wizard:

Oh, it's you again.

You know what the solution is? Lock yourself in your house and never leave it. Don't play games, watch tv, read books, magazines, etc etc etc. There, now you'll never have to see/hear/read/think about anything omg teh gay ever again :wizard:

You know, I'm seeing a lot of straight males bringing up the fact (in this thread and in others) that they feel like you can't really flirt with the two female love interests nearly as much as the males. It's obviously the same for females romancing females, as well. I really felt like the female romances in general were neglected.

I had been planning on romancing Merril initially but there were so few instances where I could flirt with her compared to the guys that I wasn't even sure if I really could. I even tried flirting with Isabela a bit (great way to up her friendship, btw) and I still only found a handful of opportunities compared to the males. With Anders, I understand; he's just a bit flirty, but when I noticed that it was about equal with Fenris, it just didn't feel right that the two fem characters barely got any romantic air time. They both felt a bit flat compared to their male counter-parts.

Step 1: Move your mouse around on the little circle on the bottom of the screen.
Step 2: Find the position that makes the broken heart icon appear. (Hint: it looks like this <3 but with a crack in it.)
Step 3: Click!
Step 4: Profit.

Really? I thought I saw that flirting symbol everywhere during Merril's dialogues, even though I didn't want to use it. I never used to "not interested" symbol either though ... but if you just keep neutral, it keeps popping up all over the place.

Better yet:

Step 1: Move your mouse around on the little circle on the bottom of the screen

Step 2: Find the position that makes the heart icon appear (Hint: It looks like this [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/heart.png[/smilie] )

Step 3:Don't click it!

Step 4: Profit!

Yes, the romances are entirely optional. You don't need to "remove" anything from the game about this because you simply need to not click the [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/heart.png[/smilie] option. It's that simple.

I saw the flirt options just as often for female characters as I did for the male characters. Isabela openly came onto my femHawke twice without a <3, so obviously not so difficult to romance her (I think Anders may be the same way -- he'll flirt once even if you don't flirt with him, but with him it IS only once). It was not difficult to just ignore it.

I'm honestly not getting the problem -- and there is a lot more straight content than bisexual or gay. The only companion sexytime you may hear about is Isabela/Fenris (if neither is romanced). You can actually arrange for a straight relationship of another companion. The casual sex you see, again, heterosexual (Zevran/Isabela). Even the male elven prostitute is raving on about a woman.

Am I rambling? This whole thing just strikes me as silly. You don't have to pursue relationships, and if someone flirts with you, all you have to do is tell them, "No" and nothing else happens.

I do get, now, how poeple playing DAO accidentally ended up in the tent with Zevran. Even a <3 button is not enough to make people understand "this is flirting." Just because you have the option to flirt doesn't mean you have to take it. I swear, it's kind of like real life. You will always have the option to flirt with people; whether you choose to or not is up to you.

What Bioware did was wrong. Each character should have a defined orientation. Not everyone is straight. Not everyone is gay. To make eveyone bi is a meteoric load of bull. Your born either gay or straight. I believe bi's are confused they don't or won't recogognize their true selves.

I rather they keep the sexual orientation consistant (no "subjective" orientation). If a charactor is straight/gay/bi,keep him/her straight/gay/bi irregardless of PC gender.
