Nothing, not Leandra's death or Anders' fate or the loss of Merrill's clan gets me like Sad Grey Warden Bethany. Just crushes me every time she appears.

Agreed. Agreed agreed. I've seen so many negative reviews lately saying that they could not relate or connect with the characters.

I remember the pit of my stomach drop into my feet when the Arishok threw the Viscount's head across the room. I loved the Viscount's character. :C

The mother scene was also disturbing, although I wish she didn't speak at the end. It offers the player character closure, and it would have been more emotionally impacting if she was simply lifeless and mutilated in your arms. Er. That sounds terrible. :S

Augh! I know what you mean. She just has this look on her face like you destroyed her life, but then she turns around and is like "STAY SAFE T___T" Auuugh. Augh augh.

By the end of DA:O, I hadn't realized how emotionally attached I was to the characters until the closing statements. They all made me cry. In fact, I laughed & cried through most of that game.

In this game, though there was interest and a persistent feeling to get closer, it didn't happen to the degree it did in DA:O. Going through hard times does bring people together, but they didn't neatly seal that up in this latest game. I did get emotionally torn frequently, but not to the same degree. Horrified at the mother's death. It was relatively easy for me to turn on Anders in the end because he was being so weird & insane & I don't condone terrorism. Maybe they just didn't want us to get too attached to the characters since they'll all probably go away if they come out with a new game. Don't really know. It really got me that Alistair only made a lame cameo appearance in Awakenings, and we didn't get to converse with party members.

Still, even after all my complaints about this game, I'd still recommend it to people who loved the previous games. It's got a lot of different twists and does make one think. And the passion in those too brief episodes of kisses was off the charts. =) Those parts were awesome at least.

I love the game. I have never had a game be able to make me cry. But when Hawke is holding their mother... I started to tear up. wow.

Heh. Yeah. That got me more invested than a lot of other moments. I was more excited about the re-appearance of Bethany at the end as a Grey Warden than I was about the ending as a whole.

EDIT: found out this section is not spoiler-free, but read further at own risk of spoilers.

I started to like Bethany as a companion and she was the main DPS mage that were the first character that I could reach friendship with. I could feel Hawke's sorrow when she died... I couldn't load back either since the save before was overwritten :(.

Not as much when his mother died, but how I wanted to kill Meredith in her face when she started commenting about it. If only this game was more free choise-wise...

What's Bethany like as a Grey Warden...?

It was an emotional roller coaster, but I loved every minute of it. This is one of the reasons why BioWare games are so great.

It was probably the most emotionally invested I've ever been in a video game, even if it was incredibly depressing.

She basically hates it. She appears 3 more times i think - very briefly during the battles with the Qunari at the end of Act 2, again during Act 3 when you rescue Nathaniel Howe and at the endgame. She lightens a bit at the end, but the other 2 are very "I have to be hard now". She also sends a letter that makes it clear she blames Hawke for it and that she's completely miserable as a GW.

It's pretty heartbreaking.

The game already does it's best to crush your soul, I don't need to lose closure with mama Hawke.

The most emotional part for me was raging at the way they end the game.

I actually felt like I had more of an emotional connection with the Viscount than any of my companions. We had something in common. He was a good man trying to keep things from falling apart, much as my Hawke was. He failed, Hawke failed--we were both in the same boat where there was no way to win. There were elements of that with Aveline, but her focus was more narrow. That was understandable. She had a tough job to do, and everyone in power seemed to be trying to stop her. Still, the Viscount and Hawke were the only ones looking at the big picture and trying to keep things from going to hell.

Main story ended... But why is my "shiny" house so goddam empty???! Why aren't there any of my companions? OK, Varric tells they fled to the mountains and left the champion unfortunately. But at least Bethany could have stayed! Ahhh.. anyway now I can have a great ENCHAAANTMENT party with the dwarfs. ^^

Don't count on it. The dwarves are headed to Orlais so Sandal can enchant for the Empress. Enjoy your big, empty, lonely, shiny house! :wizard:

I agree with the bulk of the posts here. It was very tough on the soul. I wish there had been something to counter-act some of it to a degree, but alas... Not really a 'pick-me-upper' , but definitely evoked some strong emotions, which is a good thing.

I loved the horrible things that happened. I was utterly shocked and surprised when Bethany died on my Hawke in the Deep Roads (or rather, when my Hawke had to kill her). It was just not anything I ever expected, it really got to me, and then when he had to tell his mother, well ...

Leandra's death was very disturbing, but I really felt emotionally involved when I hacked my way through all of those monsters to try and get to her in time.

And the tough decisions? It was terrific. I really liked them. Nothing good, nothing evil (mostly), just different shades of gray.

I didn't find it to be so much deliberately dark for the sake of it, but to bring up moral dilemmas. I tire of games with the save the puppy / kick the puppy good guy choice / bad guy choice decisions where everything is black and white. Situations seldom are. The templars aren't without reason for wanting to keep mages in check, after all look at the Tevinter Imperium, where mages abuse their power for personal gain and enslave those without magic. But the mages aren't wrong for wanting freedom to live their lives, many of them honorable and responsible, but judged and condemned for the actions of others. I found the problems and actions taken by my companions to feel like real people in that they were flawed by past traumas and injustices. Anders hatred of the Templars wasn't just out of the blue. How would you cope if society sanctioned confining or lobotomizing your friends for something they cannot help? How much could you take before you broke? Fenris comes from an opposite backround, enslaved in the Tevinter Imperium, no memory of his past, knowing only contempt for mages. I enjoyed the way this story developed, finding that I could feel genuine empathy for the issues occuring with my companions and the problems of society.
