I don't use shield defense all the time, and I'm not using Aveline as my tank. I am using Hawke as a Weapon and Shield. But rock armor does seem like a good idea, and I will look into that.

I'm about 60 hours in on my first playthrough (Nightmare, playing as a Rogue) and I have just reached the Ancient Rock Wraith.
Whenever possible, with almost every battle, I approach each new area with my tank (Avelline) and then get a few enemies to chase me back to a choke point, with my rogue and mages waiting behind the corner.
This eliminates the problem of new waves spawning all over the place.
Very much enjoying the much more tactical combat in DA2. In DAO Nightmare was a joke because you could simply spam healing potions to get through anything.
