I would like to first start off by commending Bioware for being socially progressive in DAO and DA2, and having the balls to provide the option of pursuing a gay/bi relationship if they choose. I cannot recall off the bat in the past couple years if there have been any other gaming studios doing this?

I agree. I remember when KOTOR came out, I caught on quick that Juhani was a lesbian and asked in the Bioware forums. Can't remember the writer, but they responded that she was, indeed, and that they had tried to make it respectful and not smutty. At the same time, it was very toned down because they were afraid of the reaction to having a gay romance in a video game.

I'm glad to see we're at a place where there can be gay relationships in a game and people don't lose their minds like it's the end of the world.

Do you know how long ago this was? I just kind of assumed that DA series was the 1st to make gay/bi relationships. Also, from what I read so far in this thread, it looks like Bioware is the only game studio doing this I guess?
Just glad there is finally and that most people don't freak out over it.

This was quite awhile ago 2003.  The only other games I can think of right now that has gay/bi relationships are the Fable games, don't know about the third one since I haven't and probably won't ever play it but it is less engaging and in depth.  Fallout New Vegas has some progressive tones to it as well.

Oh right, I remember now someone a while ago telling me about Fable, but that it was more over the top role-playing or something like that. I could be wrong, so did not think much of looking into it....plus iirc, Fable is just for Xbox?

Relationships are shallow in Fable games even straight ones.  You bang your loved one and go off and kill things, come back and bang some more.  Besides you are a mute hero and conversations are non-existent so the best gay/bi relationships out in the gaming world belong to Bioware that is why so many people were pissed that ME didn't have any.

Agree with this thread. I was very happy that all of the main LI's were available to any type of player who wanted them.

It's great a developer will still make good games even though they cut some content/or rushed the game. Kudos to Bioware for having the balls to change an already excellent game. This reminds me of Zelda.

The very first Zelda when it came out was amazing. Everyone loved it then Zelda II came out and everyone hated the changes. Nintendo since has never made another Zelda sidescroller and has made Zelda one of the best series ever made. Each Zelda adds something new to an already remarkable series. I only hope Bioware takes what worked with Origins and DA2 and make DA 3 even better.

Bioware should consider not having numbers in Dragon Age title. No Dragon Age 2 maybe Dragon Age: Rise to Power would have made a better title since with number it feels like it should be a direct sequel to the previous game.

Well as much as I think it is good it is available, I think it is a little pushed in your face.
Let me clarify:

At first I did not realise I was playing the sims and that the little symbol was more important than what I was saying...., so after trying to be friendly with Anders who obviously was a little on the man-friendly side, this back hole jumps on me, kiss my hugly hawke (and savagely with that) and invites himself at my place later on, dude no! get out lol... I had just told him something along the line: "I know you are depressed but you still are charming, do not worry, all will be fine", not "I can not sleep without your breath on my neck"....

That is a cool point about the Zelda thing. Would never have thought of that unless you brought it up

OP I totaly agree, I think it's great that they did this, now im never going to do any of the romances but the 2 girls but i still like the fact that my options are limited.

I got friendzoned hard, then my second girl used me becuase she was bored, and I got left with the to cute elf.

I litterly played the romance in this game like I do in real life. It made me a bit frusterated.

Progressive means cutting features and recycling content now does it ?

Also I dont like the new romance changes, having everyone as bi is just stupid, have gay straight and bi people by all beans, but making everyone bi, no just no.
Origins was better imo.

Biware has done gay relationships since KOTOR, but no company ever has had the balls to friendzone a PC.

Thats the real progress here, and it is awesome.

As someone pointed out a while ago on the 1st page, no. Nothing I wrote originally had to do with the rehashed environments, which I really do not like, but that is an entirely whole other topic.

I don't think so much they wanted to make everyone just bi. I believe it is more of a way of them saying "hey, we respect your right to love who you want, so here, you decide how this person should act" - not sure if that made sense or you get what I'm trying to say.

Itsnot realistic, and it makes them more shallow, its moving closer to a dating sim, that is bad.
Its one thing to respect gay/bi people having them ingame, its another to make it so you can bone everyone.

You can't "bone" everyone.
A straight person can "bone" two characters
a gay person can "bone" two characters
A bi person can "bone" four characters, cause were awesome.

It would have been nice for them to let me "bone" the Captain of the Guard before she went and got all happy with her husband.

Just a question. How many of the party members are sodomites? I know about four - Anders, Fenris, Merril and Isabella. Are there any others? I did not play the game yet. Playing DAO one more time at the moment.

While i'm all for romances for all orientations, I was put off by how some romances are "subjectively" bi. As in, if your interested in them, they are all of a sudden bisexual, and when your not, or are of the opposite gender, they are straight, and always have been. Anders and Merrill being specifically the ones i'm referring to.

I think something as deep and personal as sexuality should not be able to be defined by the player. It just trivializes it a tad.

I don't understand. Why would you want a game to appeal to everyone? That's not progressive, that's marketing. I don't see what the problem was with appealing to the hardcore rpg crowd, they made millions off us. By the way, I'm a console gamer and I still think the direction DA2 took was terrible and poorly excecuted...flashy gameplay =/= better.

I don't mind the gay relationships but it's a bit unrealistic when every person is a bi.
