I'm headed into the Deep Roads after getting Oghren and I'm kind of stuck. I'm a warrior so I need Leliena to open chests and Wynne for healing, leaving only one slot left in my party. I brought Shale down because I expected some cool dialogue options with him around, only to be mostly disappointed. I'm sure I'll want Oghren in my party when I head down but I'd also like to have Shale around since, though I'm trying to avoid spoilers, I know this has something to do with the creation of golems. Any advice on party selection?

I did the same thing, but you don't really need to. Just before the important part where you'll want to have them in your party, the game shifts to the companion select screen with Ogrhen as a locked-in choice. You can take the party of your choice up to that point, then switch to Shale and Oghren then. I advise taking Shale as well, for unique dialogue.

The last thaig you visit, you will be forced to have Oghren. You can equip yourself with the best armour possible, but the plot hammer conquers all.

You are forced to take Oghren during the Anvil of the Void section, which is the last part. Shale has a special conversation during the final battle, too, but I suspect if you make the correct choice you can bring him back down to the section later and get it.

Shale's special dialogue triggers around Caridian's Cross iirc, and then he goes and does his own special section in another Thaig. Besides that, Oghren seems to have more special interactions.

I took both ohgren and shale and took morrigan with me to do the entire deep roads in one sitting, I think when I actually left, shale and ohgren had a huge long list of injurys it was hilarious.

Take both Shale and Oghren for the last bit.

Shale has a nice revelation of..... his.... character and then a sidequest is triggered soon after. The extra dialogue isn't that funny but quite insightful on the character.

And Oghren is compulsary so....

But before that, yeah keep Liliana and Wynne with you.

Any major fights or locked stuff in the last bit with the complusory Oghren? Can I come back after I finish to tie up any loose ends I might have?

There are two boss battles in the last section, and a few tough fights with compulsory Oghren.

And you can come back and tie up whatever, though Shale may not be happy about your final decision.

(Also, have Dog find an item in the room with the Anvil of the Void.)

Hmm, sounds like I might come back with Leliana (and Dog) later, if there are fights I don't want to go without Wynne and Leliana hasn't been doing it for me on the combat side lately, I hope Oghren is good since I won't have much practice with him. Perhaps I'll leave and head topside for a little bit to try him out (and give him all the high end liquor I've been hoarding all game) so I can get him some good equipment and he'll be ready to kick butt in the Deep Roads.

I was lucky, as I didnt like Sten's character, I never had him grouped, so as soon as Ogh became available, I grouped him.

However, whenever I get full packs, before selling I get to an area where I can change group members, and keep swapping them around to make sure they are all wearing the best gear from what I keep finding, In my order of priority for tank armour, its Alistair, Ogh then Sten.

I admit I didnt know that when you get to the Anvil, you get to swap characters out, so I had taken both Ogh and Shale into my group (with Wynne and my rogue) for entering Deep Roads and breezed through it, and both did a great job in the Anvil room with keeping aggro off Wynne and myself.

But for gameplay and progression, you really need both Shale and Ogh in the group for the Anvil room.

*snif* After leaving the anvil room and accepting the paragons choice...After all we've been tru YOU JUST LEAVE ME?! That part really hurt my party and I almost needed anti-depressants before I finally beat the boss....
