I knew he was something.... but damn...Is it a choice? can i say no to helping him or does the story head in that direction regardless?

I haven't tried it myself, but I've been told he'll destroy it regardless.

Agreed.  That was epic, and such a cataclysmical shift for the Dragon Age world...

I ignored Anders entirely and it still got destroyed. Ironically, he continued to ask me to meet with him about it even after the chantry was gone and I had spared his pathetic life.

I wonder if it still happens if you make him leave Kirkwall after stopping Vengence from killing the Mage girl on the Tranquil solution quest. I never tried it but I got the option to make him leave Kirkwall for good.

I'd imagine so, since his part in the third act is the catalyst that starts the final confrontations. Chances are he comes back unexpectedly and does it regardless of whether you told him to leave or not.

No, it still blows up. He say's he'll do it on his own if you turn him down to help.
