Ok, so I just decided to pay a visit to Merrill, and when I walk into her house I get a scene where apparently Keeper Merathari died. Is that normal? It just seems very random, as there was no buildup whatsoever to her dying. I can't help but think that I missed something.

It's a bug. During a later Merrill quest, she dies. Slight game glitch, that scenes occurs before that happens, rather than after. Very confusing for me at first too.

It's a irratating bug you'll come across, that mission appears later in the game

Crap, so I am just stuck with that bug? I have reloaded several times and I still get the same scene. Is there any way around it?

From what I know there isn't any way to avoid it. It's very jarring and breaks the chronology, but on the bright side it doesn't mess up the rest of the plot and you can still complete her romance just fine (if that's what you wanted, anyway).

However, since the scene played early, it won't be triggered later (after you do the quest). It will seem like the quest ends abruptly and Merrill doesn't even want to talk about it - the dialogue you were supposed to get is the one you saw. As a final note, if you do that quest and Merrill ends up stuck in your party afterwards, just go to Hawke's house to change your party and it should be fixed.
