This guide is for swapping item models.

This is purely aesthetic and won't change the game beyond item appearance.

Method 1:

First you will need GFF Editor: social.bioware.com/project/1936/

Next you need to find the correct file to open: Dragon Age 2/packages/core/data/2da.rim

Look through the list of files that GFF editor brings up and select item_variations.gda

Expand G2DA_ROW_LIST in your editor and you will see a list of item models.

It is important to remeber that these item models do not directly correspond to items you might lookup in your save files using the GFF Editor.Because of this you will have to guess which item corresponds to the one you are saving. Obviously you can narrow it down if you know your changing a greataxe or specific type of weapon or armor.

Next I'm going to go through an example in which I will change my greataxe Bloom into the Arishoks sword.

First we are going to open my item_variations.gda file using the steps described above.

Image of what you should be looking at: img155.imageshack.us/f/gffexpand.jpg/

Next we need to figure out what model we want to edit.

I already know that Bloom (savefile item name: gen_im_wep_war_two_lore_05) is the item_variations model w_axe_ax017a, so I will use this model as my example.

Next we need to expand the item we want to edit and change the strings which pick out the model and filepath.

Image of what you should be editing: img232.imageshack.us/i/gffpickitem.jpg/

Now that we know the item we want to edit lets find the item we want it to look like.

Image of Arishok sword item model properties: img220.imageshack.us/i/gffnewitem.jpg/

Now all we have to do is swap the lines of the item we want it to look like into our actual item properties.

Image of our item after the swap: img713.imageshack.us/f/gfffinalitem.jpg/

Now you just go to File -> Save As and save the file as item_variations.gda (remeber to put .gda extension at the end, since the program won't create the proper extension on its own)

Put it in your Dragon Age 2/packages/core/override folder.

Now anytime you want to edit an item you can simply edit the file in the override folder.

Image of in game model swap: img101.imageshack.us/i/screenshot2011031423524.jpg/

Should you mess up the file too much and get in game bugs like missing item models simply delete it from your override folder and start over with a fresh item_variations.gda from your 2da.rim just like we did above.

Method 2:
Save File Model Swap

Open your save file using GFF Editor

Edit TEMPLATERESREF of selected item to the item of your choice.

The item you change your model too must be the same type or your change may not work.

Dagger01 can be changed to Dagger 07, but Staff01 chan't be changed to Dagger07.

This will only effect your equiped weapon.

TEMPLATERESREF item code list:  http://mod.gib.me/dr...dditem_list.txt

This should make things alot simpler for most people.

would anyone happen to know what item variation model number Merrideth cursed blade is?

The filepath is: art\\Characters\\Weapons\\Unique\\Meredith
The model id in the item_variations.gda file is: w_GSA_014a

I found this information in the item_variations.gda file, which is quite easy to spot since the sword is called:

Unique: Meredith's Corrupted Greatsword

Good luck with the model edit, although I personally prefer the Arishok's Axe atm.

Meredith's greatsword has a little too much random coloring going on... maybe if it glowed i'd use it.

Just In case your interested:

Arishok greataxe filepath is: art\\Characters\\Weapons\\Unique\\Arishok
Arishok model id is: [b]w_gax_002a

Hazenvirus, do you know if there is a way find which model corresponds to which templateresref equipment piece, or is it all trial and error?

Thanks Adonnay, thats quite helpful.

And yeah I couldn't find any other way to identify the in game model name and the actual model numbers.

If your looking for another specific weapon try going through half the items of the type your looking for and simply removing the model id. If your weapon no longer shows up cut the section you now know its located in half again and keep going.

Is it possible to switch my armor model(for example, Champion Rogue Armor) for Isabela's attire?

I'm trying to do something similar but I can't find the path for the Black Emporium items.

How about custom made meshes and textures? I had THE two coolest swords in Oblivion and Morrowind and was wondering if it's possible to use these models?

Well I was more curious about the templateresref id. I know the base, non-glowing is gen_im_npc_wep_two_mera.

Without the toolset, I find it is a little easier to do model swapping via the saved game editor and just changing the templateresref. As long as you use the same type of item, it doesn't appear to change any of the stats or functionality, and then you get the model you want.

Is there any downside to doing it via the savegame editor instead of your more "permanent" method here?

The great and longswords should include all stock items. DLCs and promotional items are not included (except the ones that shipped with the main game, i.e. Fadeshear, Hayders Razor).

I'd be interested in this kind of thing too for future playthroughs. Except I'd kind of like it for another mage xD;

No theres really no downside to doing it this way if you know the item temp id. When I started this I was looking for a way that allowed me to use items with temp ids I didn't know like Arishok's Axe. I also made the staff of parth into a 2 hander, but it ended up being wielded upside down :pinched:.

This may not actually be possible since I believe there is no actual armor for many of your companions. They instead have what the game refers too as unibody, which means their main body and armor are together on the same body piece, so unless you want to find a way to edit isabelas entire lower body onto your character in place of your Hawkes your out of luck.

If you look at the item_variations.gda file near the bottom of the list you'll see a bunch of "unibody" items which refers to some of the companion armors, which are unfortunatley unibody.

You can edit your Champion armor, however, you can only edit it with other armor pieces from what I understand of the design. Like you could change your champion armor to look like your brothers warden armor if you so choose too. The reason this works, however, is because there are seperate pieces for each item that match with your armor pieces.

This is just speculation, however, as I haven't had much time to play around with these ideas and although some of the variations files are very easy to reference to a companion there could still be a working armor piece for isabelas armor although I have yet to discover it.

I did manage to use Isabela's face on my character, and it even retained the original skin color of my character which is white. I'd be happy enough having the entire lower body of Isabela too, so long as the body also retains the white skin color.

I wasn't expecting the skin color to change, but if thats the case then you just have to figure out where the model ID for your Hawkes body is and find the correct model id for isabela in the variations file if there is one.

No I'm afraid I do not. I just looked through it and I couldn't locate a distinct name that gave it away. I suspect its still in there somewhere, however, if someone else wants to look into it though just start changing your current item model out with each one until you find it.

Hmm. Would my "armor" level with...uh, level, if I did it that way, like it does for companions?

Thanks for taking the time to answer, by the way ^_^
