 <_<<_<<_<

Bioware - you said that in DA2, companions will respond to my command immediately and not treat it like some recommendation like DAO so....

I ask them to HOLD position while I scout ahead for traps but they will NOT listen. They will follow me regardless!! Why cant they just stay in the room I told them to... Grrrr.

[edit]
Is there a way to pin them down?

It seems there is a range limit on the Hold Position command. If you leave a certain radius, they will move to stay within that radius. I have not yet found any way to disable this.

So really, the command is "Hold, unless I get too far away, in which case come just close enough to screw up this fight."

I found Anders seems to be really bad with the the "hold" thing. During the fight with the high dragon, I had him huddled near my mage and Varric with the "hold" on while I took control of Fenris to fight the dragon and make sure he'd stay away from the mouth part and not get tossed around like a ragdoll but for some reason, I kept seeing Anders run up to the dragon, no matter how many times I'd move him away. It's not a healing issue because my mage could heal Fenris just fine from where she was at so it's a Anders issue. :P

It is not only Anders... he never listens to anyone anyways...

Against the ancient stone wraith... position them behind pillars and ask them to HOLD else that thing will eat you alive... but nobody listens to Hawke :pinched::pinched:

Notice a Trap - pressed Hold position, Averline charges into the enemy and the trap regardless <_<

I suppose that is where the "Fight like a Spartan" part comes into play...

I've honestly noticed this problem with three characters throughout my playthroughs...

Aveline (BIG one, she just WILL NOT listen.. she has done the trap thing as mentioned above, she refused to listen during the Ancient Rock Wraith thus putting herself to half HP repeatedly.. just ugh.)

Anders (he's really irritating, I always glance at my party, everyone is fine, and then glance back down and Anders has walked into a trap, into the boss face as he spews flames or somesuch, and somehow pulled aggro from every add in a fight. but Aveline seems more-so..)

and Sebastian (for some reaason, I set him up, nothing is near him, he'll start shooting his bow, and within a minute he seems to throw a fit and walks right into foes faces.. I've checked tactics, he's also set to Ranged, so he should be fleeing, not walking into foes.. just baffles me.)

It would be great if 'hold' didn't actually mean 'follow me at a distance'. I'd also love to be able to tell individual party members to hold.

The problem is the attack, they hold but if you have them set to attack in any way they will close to attack.

Also if you have tactics on and they hold, they can freeze, endlessly switching between tactics they can't execute due to range.

Its the main reason I quit nightmare, I don't have the patience to switch to each person every second of combat just to make sure they're still doing what I last told them to.

The hold button worked just fine for me. All you gotta do is select all chars and move em somewhere. After that they should not move an inch. Just pressing hold in the middle of battle won't make em stop however, u have to select and direct a place for them to stop onto ;p. Might this be the problem you are facing?

Another thing about the relentless moving of characters, this could have to do something with your tactics role. Some characters are set to move away when being attacked or from aoe. This might kinda scew u over because it overrules a lot.

As others said if their tactics tell them to do something they will move within range despite the hold. I believe settings tactics to passive prevents this.

Hold definitely only works up to a certain range, and it's extremely frustrating. The other thing I've noticed is that when my party is not on hold, my characters love to run around needlessly, even on Passive. I'm always seeing Merril just run into melee.

Slightly unrelated. but responsiveness went right down the gutter when i've cast cone of cold in order to flee and my mage won't run untill the stun/hold duration has run out. The warrior is snappy enough, but there's no possible way to keep a mage alive with these unnessecarily prolonged animations! I DEMAND THAT YOU REMOVE EVERY ANIMATION IN THE GAME BIOWARE! OR I WILL... urrhh... i'll withdraw the bridge to my cardboard castle in the cellar and block the port cullis!

Do you have their tactics set as aggressive? Though i guess it doesn't really matter, because I had Varric set as a RANGED character, but he still decided to try to shove Bianca up people's ass...

A lot of hold-issues can be prevented by setting companion's tactics to default behavior, instead of aggressive. For some reason almost all companions have the aggressive behavior (hunt down enemies) by default. Especially for mages, setting them to 'ranged' instead makes them hold position much longer.

Still, telling them to hold position while I scout out ahead seems to be an issue with radius.

I've cleared all tactics on all characters , I still set their behaviour to ranged/agressive and so forth but all the tactics has been removed. This means more micromanaging but it also means that when you think to your self "I could really use that CC abillity now" then it's there off cooldown and everything because Merril hasn't cast sleep on your tank and melee dps because they stood near three or more mobs.
This has also cleared all command issues with the "hold" button for me and made Nightmare endlessly easier for me because *I* control my CC and my AOE dps completely so you don't loose your healer because iprissonment was on cooldown or your tank and melee dps because you firestorm and fireball was shot right into them

I used hold during the high dragon battle and my entire party just stopped attacking, they stood still doing nothing.

I've seen this happen, too.  Especially with mages.  And even if I tell them to attack, they attack once and then go back to staring at their toes until I take them off Hold.

It is nothing to do with tactics. They behave just the same outside of combat
