Why Do The Qunari Have Horns?

I know there's a huge Quanri thread in the no-spoiler board, but A) I really want to focus on this horn issue, it's driving me disproportionately batty, B) since spoiler-type discussion may arise, I wanted to put it here.

So, why do you think the Qunari have horns in DA2, but not in DAO or Awakening?  After all, Sten was not the only Qunari in the first game and its attendant add-ons.  I do recall seeing the theory that Sten was a half-breed or just a large human who'd converted to the Qun, which might explain him, but not the other Qunari you meet in his dream, or all the Qunari mercenaries and such you slay, or the Qunari merchant in Awakening.

Perhaps there is a subrace of Qunari that look more human, don't have horns, etc., and this race serves as a kind of "spy arm" for the Qunari.  Sten and his were certainly military, but maybe a special division of the military, sent to "peacefully" explore places, rather than invade.  Thus, their more human/less intimidating appearance would put people (relatively) at ease.

Or maybe it's just part of the minor visual redesign between DAO and DA2 (like the elves now all look like Na'vi), and is explained in the same way as Star Trek explained the Klingons. . . "It is something we do not discuss."

What do YOU think?

Qunari have always had horns. The Qunari we saw in Origins didn't because there was only one head model. There was only one head model because they didn't want to deal with Sten and helmets. So, they said that those Qunari either cut their horns off (the Tal-Vashoth or whatever) or were born hornless (Sten).

I think if Sten was in DA2 (our Sten), then he'd have horns. It was an art change, and I'd really rather them include Sten in the redesign and not try to make some sort of half-race to explain a development change in art direction.

I agree that it is a case of the Klingons.

Sten was born without horns, and those born without horns are honored, and have a great role in the future.

Sten would still be hornless. They're not making up the hornless thing now to explain why Qunari do have horns. They made it up in Origins to explain why those Qunari didn't.

It's not a retcon. It's the opposite of a retcon. It's a... fore...con. Or something. It's just con.

I really don't think cutting off their horns is an adequate explanation. There would have been scarring, or some kind of evidence of, for lack of a better term, self-mutilation. Skin tone is also a consideration. Now, some kind of "advanced" cosmetic surgery could be an explanation. The Qunari seem a little more advanced technologically than the rest of Thedas, so it's possible they've developed some technique to alter Qunari to look more human. Magic might also be involved. Qunari mages seem a lot more powerful than other mages, despite (or perhaps because) of their extreme treatment.

As for Qunari born without horns. . . how is that different from "unhorned" Qunari being a subrace of "normal" Qunari?

I'm surprised so few people want an in-world explanation. For me, hand-waving it away is the LEAST satisfactory way of dealing with it.

in DA:O i thought qunari were just a tall race of humans with a wacky religion and social order. i didnt think they were a completely different species since they were just large humans. this is one of those cases where a retcon is GOOD.

I find the horns kind of unsettling myself. Some explanation of this in game, either in DA:O or DA2 would have led to less head scratching for me.

Yeah, this is pretty much it right here. We've already been told by the developers, like ishmael said, that in Origins they originally did want to do horns on the Qunari but couldn't with all the fussing.

Seeing horns on them now is basically seeing Bioware achieving what they've wanted to do since the first game.

Though Sten will still be hornless if he appears at some point. Lore wise hornless Qunari are thought to be destined for greatness or to be stronger than most. Thus why his Arishok sent him to Ferelden for a answer about the Blight.

Qunari were always meant to have horns, that's why Orge's have the very same horns. Sten was a beresaad, a vanguard. Being Hornless, they're mroe able to "blend" are spread the Qun to us heathens. But yes, helmet meshes were the problem in Origins =(

I was disappointed with the horns. I was happy in Origins that they didn't go the standard "let's make this warlike race look like big badasses" route. I preferred to think of them as a sub-species of humans, though not quite human.

I wouldn't really say they are 'warlike' even. Not like orcs or something. Those Qunari sat on their seats for years waiting to ...(find?) the relic. They certainly do go to war when they get their dander up but it took years to get them riled up to that point. And they had lost a lot of their men to the coastline being Tal-vashoth, it would have been smarter/faster for them to come in and take over immediately instead of waiting.
And I agree on the 'horns' issue that it's a Klingon thing, 'something we don't discuss'.

It really bothered me that the Qunari have horns in DAII also. One of my very favorite characters in DA:O was Sten because of his views on life & living. He wasn't very attractive, but wasn't ugly like the ones in DAII. I had wished he was romanceable too. In this new game, making the Qunari so vicious was unsettling to me. Sten did warn, in DA:O, that the Qunari were coming. At least the gay Viscont's son was in love with the Qunari. I didn't find it plausible, based on their arrogant, hostile, and graphically "demonic" visual appearance.

It's stated several times in both games that the way of the Qun is to conquer and convert. For the purpose of the trope, they are warlike.

It's not handwaved. There is an in-world explanation. Read the Origins codex entry for Qunari :pinched:

I think it's mainly a case of the Dragon Age universe being reimagined. After all, when you think about it, darkspawn look different too, in fact elves now have their own uniqueness, and character models are far more varied and unique. In Dragon Age Origins, I was dissapointed that my male elf character was almost indistinguishable from a human, unless you looked closely at the ears. I think this was more an artistic direction than anything profound. Or you could consider this. Dragon Age II does not have you actually playing through real events. It's actually you playing through events that occurred as interpreted and told by Varric, Just like the graphic novel/movie "300" tells a stylized and exagerated version of a historical event, perhaps that is what Varric is doing to keep things interesting. He does love to tell stories after all.

The Dragon Age universe isn't being "reimagined" and Bioware isn't hand-waving anything. QUNARI. HAVE. ALWAYS. HAD. HORNS!

Thank you.

Well, it is being "re-imagined" to an extent, and BioWare are handwaving certain things (like Anders's bisexuality).

But, QUNARI. HAVE. STILL. ALWAYS. HAD. HORNS!

Thank you.

Because horns are sexy. Have you noticed that everything cool in the game had horns? Dragons, Flemeth, Kossith, and desire spirits.

That's so not true. Ogres are not cool, but my character was.

ou're wrong. It is a retcon. http://www.gameinfor...ri-evolved.aspx

“Art wanted to create more space between the races so we changed the way the qunari looked,” says senior artist Matt Goldman. “We have also changed the way elves and dwarves look for that matter, but qunari seem the most dramatic because you only ever saw Sten in Dragon Age: Origins.”

Welcome to the world of Klingons. Btw, I did look it up, and no, there's nothing about horns in their Codex entry in DA:O.

DA:O ogres were cool. :(

Yeah, I'm sure you could give a non-subjective evaluation of your character's coolness.

I felt bad every time I killed a Sten, horns or no, because of DA:O. Also, the arishok: Biggest. Strongest. Hottest. It's all in the horns.
