This may contain spoilers.  I'm about 40 hours in, lvl 19 Rogue.  After I did some quest with Anders, he has gone weird all of a sudden.  His armor is black now and he refuses to talk as he's "preparing" for something big.

Well hot damn.  I have no healer now.  What's the deal?  How am I suppose to continue on hard mode, or even normal mode without a healer?  Twice now, I had to take it down to Normal difficulty and chug many, many potions just to get by.

(SPOILERS)

In my playthrough, Bethany dies in the Deep Roads so I never had her as a healer since until I finally ran into Anders.  The game is much harder towards the end (after High Dragon fight), so it's impossible for me to get by on hard or normal mode.  The Dalish camp battle, I had to take it down to casual because I had no healer and it was impossible because I used up all my potions after fighting the Keeper (demon boss), and as you well know it takes you straight down to the dalish camp where all of them attack you.  And there are A LOT of elves.

So why is this?  Is the game broken?  I'm not coming here to flame or start commotion.  I need a healer companion badly and from where I am in the game, it's not possible.

Is there a new teammate I'm suppose to find that's a healer mage?  If so, please direct me!

Thank you everyone! ^_^

So will I get Anders back? I'm just not that good without a healer in this game. I'm not one of those super-duper gamers that can tackle Nightmare and to live and tell about it. I've already died several times on Hard mode. I don't mind spoilers at this point so you could tell me if/when Anders comes back to your party? Thank you.

If Anders armor is black it usually means you somehow made him your rival. You will get him back but not till he needs you for a companion mission. But you can skip the fight with the Dalish if you select the I'll take responsibility response as they will just tell you to take Merril and leave. I'm surpised you got Anders after the deep roads as I though you couldn't gain companions after that besides Sebastion.

Ok.  I see.  So when is this companion quest going to happen?  Soon or?  And will he stay in my party or leave right after the quest?

Anders is a mandatory companion. You need to recruit him to get the map to get to the deep roads. If you take him with you during the deep roads and take Bathony, she'll not die, but she'll join the grey wardens and leave the party until "last straw" quest.

Have you do Anders' personal quest in Act 3? You go talk to him in his dark town clinic, and he asked you to gather some stuff to separate him and Justice? If you refused the quest, it'll end immediately. I think that's where Anders leave you.

There's no other healer in this game unless Hawke is a mage and get spiritual healer skill tree.

You might want to reload anders' personal quest and do it, so he remain with you.

If you're on high rivalry with Anders, and sided with templar during Last Straw, it's very likely you loose him during final battle. So you might want to think of using healing items more.

Yup, turns out it's a HUGE game bug. Something I hope BioWare will look into. If I'm wrong, then I do apologize, but it's clear-cut and dry that this is a game bug and I'll tell you why:

I remember now, I was doing the "Justice" quest for Anders and for some reason I didn't know what the heck I was doing... I totally forgot to distract the Grand Cleric (had to start a dialogue with her), and Anders will appear by your side, etc. So I didn't do this the first time around, and that's when I encountered the bug.

I entered the Chantry, and didn't know what I was doing, and then I exited the Chantry. I went directly to Ander's Clinic and spoke with him. He responded exactly to me the way you would if you completed the quest normally (not like I did by exiting the chantry and not talking to Grand Cleric).

By this time, he is already "one" with the demon spirit inside him and that's why his armor dawns the black color. And he is also in the blue "friend" zone on my playthrough.

So because I messed up the Chantry part, right when you're done speaking with him, to add him to your party (because you should only have 3 people total, after this quest), he is not selectable at all.

I think it's a bug, because the mission switches from a party of 4, to a party of 3 when he leaves you inside the Chantry to do his "thing." And when you return to Ander's Clinic, you are then again left with a party of 3 total. When you go to the "select your party" stand thing, you are suppose to be able to select him. In which my case, I wasn't able to at all.

It's really weird. I don't know how to explain it better. As long as you didn't abruptly leave the Chantry part and you continued on to talk to the Grand Cleric, you should be okay. And he will continue to be selectable as a party member.

I hope this helps. I lost 5 hours of gameplay. I reverted back to an earlier game save which was at around 35 hours. But I'm happy now that I've done it. The way I specced Anders, he's basically, a healer/tank. He was tanking one of the mid-sized dragons in the High Dragon fight, and he would not go down. I was pretty amazed that I actually nailed a spec for him because I usually suck at these things.

Thanks you guys for all your help at such a late time at night. Well, it's actually 1 am here.

Take care!

P.S. BioWare, I hope this helped you guys with bug/patch notes or something. Whatever you guys do with bugs like this. :D

LOL I didn't know you can use Anders as a Tank :D

Anyway, I'm glad you get Anders back. He has personality issue, but a damn good healer.

As for the bug part, sounds like a bug because you end up playing it again and it worked. But, similarly, if you didn't do Fenris' personal quest in a timely fashion, he'll get angry and leave your party for good. So I guess maybe in an early design stage, Anders would leave if you refuse to talk to grand cleric, and later decided to remove, some of the fragment got left behind and causing trouble.

I further tested if this was a game bug. I started the save up again, entered the Chantry, did not talk to the Grand Cleric, and "leave area" right away.

I pulled up the map, and the quest arrow is highlighted right over Darktown. I fast travel to darktown, and head right into Ander's Clinic.

The arrow is beaming right over Anders, I speak to him just like I would if I "normally" finished the quest. So that's done.

I walk out to choose my party, and he is NOT selectable. Yet he is still a friend, not a rival.

So this has to be a game bug, correct?

There is an off-chance that someone might have done what I did, which I doubt... but there's a slight chance. Hopefully this helped.

Test completed. Bug confirmed.

Thanks!

Yup, he tanked that dragon!  I literally watched him for 10 seconds, and he was not going to die so I got bored and ran right over to finish what was left of the dragon.  It was pretty awesome haha. :P

You may be on to something there about the bug.  And I think you're right.. because if I just abruptly left the Chantry without talking to the Grand Cleric, wouldn't that have sparked up a different conversation with a more angry tone?

Well, I'm glad this worked out well at the end.  I don't mind losing the 5 hours as I should have questioned this right when it happened.  I thought he was going through a phase and that he would rejoin. :P

He does have a weird personality.  Could be because of the demon... or maybe not.  He seems to strike the oddest comments in conversations.    It's like he's trying to be funny and sarcastic, but he isn't funny. lol

Thanks for coming back to this thread to check up on me!  Good night and enjoy DA2. :)

Yes, I figured this much already.  Thanks.  But you probably didn't read all of my posts did you?  It's still a game bug.

I played through the game on hard and for many of the fights (high dragon, final bosses, etc.) I never brought Anders just because I hated him (and did perfectly fine without the hypocritical whiny . . .). Hopefully in DA3 we can get more choice than one incredibly annoying healer.

Yeah, he's a bit on the whiny side.  I totally agree with you that we should have another choice in healer.  In DA2, there could have been another healer companion that you meet a long the way.  I could understand Merrill not having a healer skill tree at all because of the story and the role she plays in it.  She's a wicked blood mage if specced right.  Paired with Arcane skill tree, she can wreck havoc.

My Merrill is Primal/Arcane/Blood Mage.  My blood mage skill tree is completed filled.  With Anders, she's unstoppable.  With the two together, I can plow through enemies like no tomorrow.  I just need to find a way to get them more hit points.  Their mana pools are large, but their hp is way too low at the moment.  Not a great thing for clothies.

Try building Merrill with zero points in Willpower, somewhat high Magic and majority in Constitution, then keep her in the Blood mage sustainable all the time, with all the +Blood Magic equipment you can get your hands on?
That made her a power house for me, and the fact she can't be healed when running the sustainable doesn't bother me because I never drag heal-bots with me.

Also another 'trick' with that setup is to activate a gazillion sustainables on her, they will eat her mana pool, but you use your Hit Points for casting anyway so doesn't matter, right?
