Hi, can anyone explain to me how the equipment stars work ? How do i improve them ?

The equipment stars are a rating of that item versus your current level.
Problem is, they are horribly and utterly useless. Ignore them.

I think like 3 stars = your level or something like that.
Its useles... along with the 20+ "amulets" in my inventory. I usually sell them all, why bother wasting time reading each one.

Those items are not going to increase with your level as they are determined to effective by your level...so 1 star items are crap n up to 5 stars(which is usually rare or unique loot n buys) are BADASS!

Its explained in manuel its a crude measure of effectiveness with 2 stars being what bioware consider to minimum effective equipment for your level. Though TBH your better of just using your own brain and forgetting about the items Star rating.

Totally ignore the stars for mage staffs. Sense a lot of the lower end staffs provide certain bonuses that you may want instead of straight dmg.

it's a silly system, treating us like some real dumb target audience...

The star rating system is not accurate at all. For example, I have a ring in my inventory that is at 4 stars and has +2 mana/stamina regeneration. Funny enough, the ring on my finger is +2 mana/stamina regeneration, and is only 2 stars. The only thing the stars represent correctly is the value an item will sell for; that is, higher starred items will sell for more (except some DLC items that only sell for 1 copper). But, I agree with Kotli, look at the item in comparison to your current one and choose what is better. Completely ignore the stars.
Bioware should have assigned some kind of value to each of the item stats/abilities. That would have at least made the star system more functional.

I was hoping the stars would represent the useful life of the item. A 5-star item would be sturdier and thus provide its benefits for a longer period than would a 2-star item with the same stats. A 1-star item would provide only half the stated benefits (because it's nearly worn out) and a zero-star item would provide nothing (and would bring significantly less in resale than it would have had I sold it when it had a higher star rating).
Or, another way of using the stars: the stars could have represented beefed-up stats. Equipping a 2-star item would give you exactly the stats as described. A 3-star item would give you 110%, a 4-star item 125% and a 5-star item would give 150%. Again, a 1-star item gives 50% and a zero-star item provides nothing. Of course, over time, the star-value would decrease.
This is just off the top of my head -- point being, as currently implemented, the star system is either flawed or wasn't described as well as it should have been. Perhaps we just don't understand how it is supposed to work?

A large portion of the damage your spells do is based on your staff's base damage. Unless it's really important like some useful proc or improving your health:mana ratio for blood magic it's generally better to be using the highest dps staff you can find (or close to it).

They are also very bugged - you often see two identical items receiving different star ratings. I also believe that in evaluating weapons the stars reflect only the base damage of that weapon, and take into consideration none of the bonuses.
I've also seen an amulet of +20 attack given a three star rating, while an amulet giving +2 to mana regeneration AND +20 attack, given zero stars.
So that's how good the star system is. Maybe if they'll actually fix it in some future patch, it'll becoome somewhat useful as a rough guide.

No wonder my character has slowly, ever so slowly got worse, and worse and worse. Awesome system. Like it.

I'm really not a fan of the star ratings in DA2 to be honest
