On my second playthrough as a Rogue again I didn't care about the first death, but when Bethanny died in the Deep Roads (didn't know it was going to happen) I restarted the game because I loved her character. I honestly got tearful and started over so I could bring Anders along to save her life.

I mean, if you don't make the right choices, it could go BAM lose your sibling. BAM lose your other sibling. BAM lose your mom.

Bethany I found to be a bit of a snoozer, though. I'm not inclined to do many more warrior/rogue playthroughs since the plot difference between them is her or Carver, and Carver's more interesting. Perhaps if they both went to Kirkwall, it might have been different, but if I have to pick one, it's going to be the jealous one.

So far I've had a mixed bag. Bethany was interesting and I would have loved to have known her better. Carver is now a Grey Warden, but he is unlikely to father any children, That leaves my FemHawke who can help to carry on the family name, but time will tell, since she's involved with Isabela right now. At least she will still have uncle Gamlen and her first cousin (the Warden), but again, those two are unlikely to be able to continue the Amell and Hawke family lines. She really has lost a lot come to think of it...
Gamlen has a daughter, she can continue the line.

Killing one sibling early and killing Leandra were necessary I think to proboke a strong emotional responce. But killing or taking away the other sibling as well was just overkill.
i agree.

And then he vanished for the rest of the game. I disapprove, Bioware. There wasn't a single full convo with him after that. Not even an itty bitty snippet of conversation about Mother? Lame.
And I cried when Leandra was killed. It's the first time in my life I actually cry because of a videogame. So well done on that, Bio.

Don't you get an opportunity to tell GW!Carver that Leandra's dead when he shows up with the other Wardens during the Qunari invasion? And then he vanished for the rest of the game. I disapprove, Bioware. There wasn't a single full convo with him after that. Not even an itty bitty snippet of conversation about Mother? Lame.

At the beginning of the game, Carver's death didn't matter much to me - but I have a feeling that on my next playthrough with a mage Hawke, Bethany's death really will, and having Carver along will help him grow on me. I really ended up caring about Bethany, but that was only after having time to have her with me.

Leandra though, and I've tried to made this point elsewhere on the boards, is just pointless and exploitative. It serves no real purpose to the plot, and it really seems forced, like BioWare couldn't quite think anything else to do and decided to go for a cheap emotional moment.

Yeah, but Wesley is a far more obvious target and he's even injured! The first sibling death was expected, even before seeing the demo. Really, when does BioWare NOT kill an early companion?

As for Hawke's family in general:
- I lost Bethany and while mother crying over her and saying, "I'll never forget you, Bethany" was chilling... Hawke had little emotional connection whatsoever.
- I lost Carver for a time to the Grey Wardens. I got him back in the end and loved the whole, "brother and sister together again" speech but found it somewhat annoying that at no point could we really connect as family. Cut out a romance scene and allow me to embrace my brother (or sister) after telling them that mother died... The emotional tie just kind of dead ends.
- Leandra, I did care for her. I hated her death, but not in a, "my mother's just been killed!" kind of way. Her death would have been more emotional if she was on the ground, wounded and dying... rather than being a stitched-together monster that could somehow still formulate complete sentences despite the whole... head stitched back on approach.
- Uncle Gamlen and Charade, after losing so much... I wanted nothing more than to invite one of them to live with me. After Leandra's death, I hoped that I could connect with my uncle. Instead, I do his quest, find out I have a living cousin, and the relationship with either of them ends there.
To be blunt, I loved having my family around (well, when they could be), but the emotional investment in caring for my family wasn't entirely there and likely could have been made a lot deeper. I mean... I felt Aveline and Donnic had more emotion to them than Leandra's death or getting to see my brother again after losing both mother and sister.

Carver ... I love my bro. He was a massive jerk but my Hawke was still incredibly fond of him and when he left with the Grey Wardens I imagined her to be very torn up about it. I got a pang every time I ran into him and he had to leave again. As for Mother ... I've never been so saddened or so horrified while playing a game. I think I actually felt physically ill when she got up from that chair. I wish I could have tortured the man who did that rather than just beating him in some combat.
Gamlen ... I thought my Uncle was an ass and then grew terribly fond of him, was particuarly touched when Charade appeared.
Aveline and Varric aren't family, but they might as well have been. Aveline was the rock to my poor battered Hawke. She always lifted my spirits just knowing she was on my side. Varric was the same, he genuinely liked some of my companions who just all seemed to hate each other, he joked, spoke honestly. He was a fantastic character.
I romanced Anders and my (by this time) emotionally crippled femHawke couldn't kill him and instead ran off with him, I guess she thinks he can still be saved ... she's mad I know lol
