So it all depends on which companions you take with you? In my game, Fenris (gained rivalry points for dragging him along too) and Isabela most certainly always betrayed me, despite of the choices I made. For a moment, I was scared as hell that I'll actually lose both for real; then I remembered we were in the fade. Aveline was the only one who didn't succumb to temptation.

Varric didn't betray me at all. Fenris did, but not Varric.

As stated in the OP, Varric will only betray you if Merrill or Fenris isn't in your group.

Fenris overrides Varric's betrayal and Merrill overrides both of theirs.

I'll clean up the OP more when we have more info on everyone.

Trophonius, was your party composition Aveline, Fenris and Isabela? Because that would answer our earlier question about who was more likely to betray Hawke in the Fade out of the two of them. Apparently Aveline will only betray you to the Desire Demon if Isabela is absent.

I took along Merrill, Isabela and Fenris. Fenris didn't betray me. Isabela was on the friendly side but possibly not as far as 50%. Merrill was over 50% rivalry but not maxed. Fenris was over 50% friendship and may have been maxed.

Yeah, I took those three with me. I'm not sure if it was influenced by rivalries/friendships though. Aveline/Isabela were on the friendship path with me, while Fenris was at around 20% rivalry.

It's looking quite unlikely that friendship/rivalry would affect the betrayals. The patterns so far don't seem to match that and it would be a nightmare to code into the game.

why is it that your companions make deals with the demons just like that and u kill them and they just wake up?
that's really... really... really weak.

Anders doesn't really 'betray' you per se, but he will fight you if you take the demon up on its offer. And then you get an extra dialog with him at the clinic afterwards where he gets angry at you for dealing with demons.

Yea, I'm wondering this too, even more when I realized that Marethari says killing Feynriel in the Fade would make him tranquil. Doesn't  work on your companions, then? Strange.

Merrill was the only one to Betray me. Good thing I took Justice with me :)

Anders is surprising loyal during this, all things considered anyway.

Justice will attack you if you consider making a deal with the Sloth demon.

Anyone tested Aveline more? Or Varric? Any more info on apologies right after the Fade or later?

Rival Aveline when playing as a mage is... hurtful, in a word. She's in a lot of doubt, disturbed by perversion of memory she was at peace at, and it feels this experience makes her more mistrustful of mages. She even states she is 'all for the gallows', to which player character can respond with 'even for me?'

And Aveline won't deny it. She'll say more on how mages are 'not mortal' and can't be trusted.

Really gutwretching :)

Oh, and picking gentler conversation options during the apology dialog still yelded +5 rivalry. I imagine agressive choices can yeld higher.

Don't know how her friendship apology goes.

I had Aveline in high friendship and she still went on about how mages are not to be trusted and not mortal blah blah.
But got friendship points nonetheless with diplomatic options.
Fenris and Aveline you get whatever kind of points are on the side you're already with. Kind of like the gifts.
Isabela you can get 10 friendship for the apology.
Merrill, I think, is like Fenris and Aveline. I had Merrill in friendship (not very high). Choosing the middle "charming" option gave me some friendship points in the Fade and the apology got me more. If you're diplomatic or aggressive with either Merrill or Isabela when they betray you, you get rivalry points no matter how your standing is with them.
Didn't notice the same for Fenris and Aveline. But then I only chose diplomatic options.
Aveline is the most affected by the trip to the fade from all of them as far as I've seen. Regardless of friend or rival.

I was Friending Aveline and Fenris and neither were maxed. I just did Diplomatic choices when confronting them and I gained no points.

Weird, my runthrough with Aveline and Fenris in the fade (I was paranoid and avoided bringing mages to the fade other than myself) I got points from both of them and I know I mostly chose diplomatic options.  Fenris was pissed off +rivalry, Aveline was "oh mages are dangerous blah blah" and I went probably with something along the "even me" line, I can't remember.  Ended in +5 friendship.

I had Aveline, Merrill and Fenris with me in the fade. The only one who didn't betray me was Fenris...and at that time his friendship wasn't even maxed.

Would like to add to this that if you get Justice to attack you, then also go against the Sloth demon, you will have one of the ''star'' choices with Anders where you can convince him it was all a ruse and he goes back to being okay with it all.

There is a cool option after you ''kill'' Anders in the fade: you may still refuse the offer of the demon. Then back at the clinic you have the option to explain Anders that you did not accept the offer and that it was only to get info to help the boy... Interesting conversation...

At first I did it to ****** off Anders for fun:  gave me 15 rivalty but back at the clinic if you explain what you've done 20 friendship,,,,,,Posted Image

Everyone,

Here's the deal (near as I can tell):

Everyone in the party will betray you in the fade except Anders (because he's completely taken over by Justice and there is nothing like 'possession' to keep you on the straight and narrow) and Sebastian who will not go at all.

That means the trick is to either go with a party where all three people will be tempted by the same demon.  Only one will betray you (or two are tempted by the same demon + Anders).  Warning:  If you talk at all with Torpor, Anders will attack and betray you on the spot.

Pride:  Merril first, then Fenris, then Varric
Desire: Isabella first, then Aveline.

Also, Anders gains +5 rivalry just for selecting him to go into the fade, and Merril is jealous and gets +10 rivalry.  If you DO attack Torpor on sight, you get additional rivalry (+10 I think) with Merrill, and if you use the diplomatic option with the Pride Demon, you get an additional +20 rivalry (the aggressive....betray me or die gets only +10 rivalry).

If you want to Rivalmance Merril, taking her along is a good way to do it since (esp if you are harsh when she apologizes) you can get 40+ rivalry here easy.  If you want to romance her, leave Merrill at home.

So my suggested parties:

Hawke, Fenris, Merril, Varric (esp if Rivalmancing Merrill).  SInce all three are "pride" NPCs,only Merrill will betray you.

or

Hawke, Anders, Avaline, Isabella (if Romancing Merrill).  Again the mild +5 Rivalry for bringing Anders is more than offset by attacking Torpor on sight, and you don't need a rogue making Isabella the sacrificial 'fade' victim.  In this case Pride has no one to turn, and Desire will always turn Isabella who honestly is the easiest to defeat.

The fade is a fab way to gain friendship/rivalry. I got rivalry from Anders for telling the keeper I'd make Feynriel tranquil if I had to (didn't have Merrill with me because I wanted friendship from her). Took Anders, Merrill and Isabela to the fade and made a deal with the demon gaining friendship from Merrill and rivalry from Anders. Gave the sarcastic response to Isabela's betrayal to get 5 friendship. Didn't get any friend or rival points for Merrill's betrayal with the sarcastic answer. Gained friendship from Merrill's apology for being nice/sarcastic. Gained friendship from Isabela for being nice and offering a spanking. Gained rivalry from Anders for his big rant about demons being bad.

I usually take those I want to gain F/R points with. There is no real need to avoid betrayals since there is little combat in the Fade anyway - and you can summon the dog.
