I just did this quest for her after I was able to romance her and ask her to move in with me,
so naturally my emotional bond with this character was already pretty much established.
But my god, what a mindblower!
Her "A New Path" quest in search of the demon who was bound in order to help her repair the Eluvian,
what a dramatic twist that I ended up having to kill her entire Dalish clan.
This must've been nothing short of horrifying and rediculously mental damaging..
I'm curious as to how this will play out in the end.
Well done Bioware! I was thoroughly impressed...

I got it in Act 3, after the first quest for Meredith I believe

I replayed the quest three times because of how emotional it was! Not what i normally do on my first playthrough, i normally make a choice and stick with it without thinking much about outcome.
Originally i killed the Keeper and when confronting the other dalish i took responsiblity, however when i got 15 rivaly from merril i reloaded to see the other options. The 2nd run through i killed all the dalish but i felt bad so i reloaded again and went with the peaceful solution.
It's moments like these that remind me why i love Bioware RPGs.

that fight with the Dailish was the hardest i had....
one word of caution, doing this quest before the murderous crow breaks that quest, as you kill the contact and cant enter the cave to meet zev

oh ok, good to know i thought i broke the chain for merrils quest because i got the ending to it and it confused me because she talked about how "they were all gone"

If you chose the I'll take responsibility option you don't have to kill the clan.

I wish i could have pointed the guy who blamed her and said "He did it" and while the dalish turn on him I would ride on the keeper's corpse down the mountain going "CHOO-CHOO!"

Why in the world would you miss out on the chance to kill some hippy elves?

That would have been a "Mighty bull" move indeed.

the only "good" ending i could come up with in this quest was that i killed the keeper and told she was stupid (although i would disagree and tell the dalish i would take responsability on merrill)
either way i will keep my moral with her unchanged (note that if u got full morale with her u will lose it anyway IF u want to spare the dalish ortherwise there is a gift u can keep during this mission to regain morale with her the momento would be the most adequate in this case

You don't have to slaughter their whole damn clan, man. You just need to take responsibility for Merrill.

I didn't have to kill the clan. Merrill just went to the forbidden cave and the keeper took the pride demon inside herself and we had to kill the keeper. The clan let Merrill go and said she was a fool. How did people have to kill whole clan??

It's easy enough to miss. Only one of the responses saves the clan, and a lot of people don't reload and try again on principle.

I *did* try and solve it peacefully, but the idiots where determined to get poor Merills blood. So they got purged with force lightning.

I romanced her too. And the WHOLE THING is rendered TRITE by the fact that..despite some off comments by her while you're movin around....after the fact..and once you leave the area..NOTHING IS EVER SAID ABOUT IT.
Merrill murders her keeper and get's attacked by her old clan..and just returns to Kirkwall and goes "yaaaaaaaaaaaaawn"
it's stupid. And immediately rendered any bit of drama felt during it completel trite.

The quest is glitched. She grieves for her clan before it begins. Apparently, she's really messed up about it, but it can be hard to tell because the code for A NewSuron wrote...

Not directly related to this quest, but on my second playthrough I chose all the heart options for both isaella and merrill and at the epilogue varrick says "except isabella" and the subtitles say "except merrill"

Kinda deadened a bit of the emotional impact of the quest when you talked to Merril and she was all "D: D: D: they're all dead" before you start the actual quest.

kill everyone. She apparently doesn't care too much about it.
Seriously... this was a poor quest line. Oh, I heart you Merrill. What's that? the only way you'll love me is if I go help you free a demon and then end up killing your whole clan? which you wanted to protect?
gah!
was a fun twist though. ended up wiping everyone out as the clan didn't believe anything I said. no reloads used.
by the way, you actually have to do this quest if you want the crafting achievement. Fel poison is good and can only be found here.

Agree this was a hard quest! I love the elves and played a bunch in DAO... Killing her clan made me hate myself a little bit. Good stuff, that a game can make me feel that.
